SWM Workshop 'Spring 2011' is ON!

13 Mar 2011 21:11 #22061 by lfan
SWM Workshop 'Spring 2011' is ON! was created by lfan
With a new re-launch comes a need to refresh things around here, including the Workshop naming convention. From now on, the SGI Workshop will be know as the SWM Workshop (SWMW) and be 'numbered' based on time. It's doubtful we'll have more than one a season, but that is what we'll be shooting for! So without further ado, we present the Spring 2011 SWMW Topic: 'New Beginnings'

To help usher in the new re-luanch and in keeping with that theme, we'll be taking submissions for the theme of 'New Beginnings', starring the ubergirl of your choice or creation. 'New Beginnings' could have several meanings such as an origin story (creation of a new ubergirl) or maybe a 'change of heart' for an existing ubergirl (superheroine to villainess or vice versa) or maybe a new change of scenery/lifestyle change (supergirl becomes a lesbian or moves to a new city). The topic is pretty flexible, so I'm HOPING that we'll have some good participation in this one from our existing authors as well as new, aspiring ones! Of course once the entries are submitted, we'll vote on the best and crown the winner for bragging rights.

And to help sweeten the pot, a little incentive is that SWM is gonna have one of our resident artists do a pinup of the winner's 'creation', we're still working on the details of this (who it will be) but that is the plan! So enter now and watch your creation come to life (at least in a pinup).

We'll take submissions over the next few months, with a deadline of May 31st (last day of Spring), so get your pencils/word processors out and start creating!

The natural disaster in Japan, and the subsequent impact on the nuclear plants, have prompted an idea for the workshop.

Do you guys think it inappropriate to use the disaster has a point of origin?

What do you mean "It's on!" I don't remember ever being "Served!"

I usually don't mind too much - after all one of the point of fiction is exploring other possibilities - but other people might be offended. In the end is up to you, just remember that this isn't without precedents.

Thanks for the comments.

The premise would be something good coming from such tragedy.

It might be possible to do a workshop based on natural disasters, but it would need to be done very carefully. A relatively small scale story about a superwoman assisting in the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami might work if it was done well and respectfully. On the other hand, I think that any story that featured a superwoman CAUSING this sort of disaster would be extremely inappropriate and in very bad taste.

I doubt if I'll join in, but maybe I'll change my mind in a few weeks or something. I just haven't been in the writing mood lately, and none of the stories I've started and have been meaning to get back to really fit the theme.

Let's put the boot on the other foot here. Can you imagine writing and submitting a story about a superwoman on 9/11? Think on that.

I'm going a different direction now, since it seems an unpopular choice. However, to answer your question, yes I could. I am an American soldier and was serving active duty at the time in Germany. I remember the day clearly. It would depend on the context of the story. If something good arose from tragedy, then I feel that it could actually be a positive thing.

Am I considered a resident artist here? I'd love to do a pin-up.

As for the Japan tragedy I don't think any of us on this board are the insensitive type and mean well and you should be able to write what you want. My opinion, though - I don't like to use present day tragedy as inspiration for something like we all do here.

I wouldn’t be entering this, but I’m going to try and use it as motivation to try and finish a story I started for the ‘National Supergirl’ workshop last year and haven’t done anything on for ages.

I've got a story that should work well for this, just a question of whether I can find the time to write it (not to mention the half a dozen other stories/chapters I've got in the works, most way behind schedule... )

Ah, what the hey. Count me in!
