That decision is up to DKC, as the last winner he decide the next theme.

I'm okay with any theme......but, I wonder if we should do a Halloween inspired WS. Oct31 might be tight but I'm sure we can push the deadline ahead by a few weeks.

So how does a mini Halloween workshop sound? Start date will be the 1st October 2016 and the close will be the 31st with a 1-week voting period.

Story length a max of 1000 words.
What do you think of that idea?

I think that making it a bit longer, like 2000 words would be better, otherwise I'm all for it.

Woodclaw and I have chatted about it and we have come to agreement on some specs to the workshop these are: -

start date: 1 October 2016
end date: 31 October 2016
Max word count: 2000 (we will allow stories over that limit but by only a few words at maximum)
Voting will be one week only and will be by forum vote.

The actual theme is the sticking point, while DKC won the last large workshop, seeing as this is a mini one I think it should be an admin decision and leave DKC to decide the next major one, the winner of this mini one in my mind will choose the next mini workshop theme.

Do you need a theme other than it being "Halloween-related"?

I'd favor the theme for "mini-workshops" just be something the site-owners set rather than serve as a prize for the previous mini-event. It allows each of them to be separate undertaking instead of a chain, and they can be a little more reactive to the events that prompt a mini-workshop: a holiday, a news item, something happening in the larger world of superheroes...

after having a chat with lfan the settings for the workshop are now as follows

start date: 1 October 2016
end date: 31 October 2016
Max word count: 2000 (we will allow stories over that limit but by only a few words at maximum)
Voting will be one week only and will be by forum vote.

As you can see the word county rule has been stricken out, time is the factor here rather than the number of words.

The theme will be set by the admins., I like augoose's idea of admins setting the short workshops and the winner of the last large workshop setting the large workshops so that's going to be taken forward.

Once the admins have decided the theme I'll make the announcement.

Sure you do not want to cap it at say, 5000 words?

I suspect that people who can put out more than 5000 words and still have good enough writing quality to win the workshop aren't common, and any who choose to submit stories will be welcome. If they win, they deserve it.

Lack of a word count does seem a bit odd for a "mini" workshop, though.

Nothings worst than reading a good story and then having it end simply because of a pre-determined word count. In this instance, the time you have to write the story should create the supplement needed to keep the word count low.....We'll only have 30 days to get the story done vs. the 3 - 4 months we usually have.

Personally, i'm not a fan of writing with those restrictions....Nor am I a fan of reading stories with those restrictions. But, I may be in the minority.

OK

There has been extensive discussion on the word count issue, originally I proposed a 1000 word count limit, then it was suggested that a 2000 word count would be better, then there was a suggestion of a 5000 word count, eventually we looked at the issue and decided that removing the word count restriction would be the best option, seeing that you will only have 29 days to write the story not many writers would be able to write a 5k or 10k story in that time, so with that in mind.

This is our first Halloween workshop and if it's liked by people we would make it a yearly event.

I'm with D_K_C on this one. I think it's OK to have a word count as guidance so as to set expectations, but significantly over/under should not be an issue.

In the end, its a function of what kind of challenges you want to give the author, and what drives an author to finish a story.

If this was a proving ground for professional journalists or article-writers, then word count is absolutely vital, and getting practice at delivering a good article on the word count is a very useful exercise.

But if interesting characterization and plot is the goal (as it is here), then word count should not be critiqued or limited.

But then, that's me. I have enough trouble with tightly themed contests to start with. In my view, the value of a contest is to get stories turned in by a date, which in turn drives the creative process and provides motivation and a little competition (which is usually a good thing). Only the reader should care what the story is about or how big (or small) it is.

I know in my case, I always have a half dozen (often more) stories in some state of completion. When one of those matches an upcoming contest theme, then it may motivate me to focus on finishing it. Otherwise, I whittle away very slowly on all of them, often not completing any one.

But the idea of starting a new story to match a theme (or size) is generally uninteresting to me. But then, I've been doing this since the 1980's, so I'm an old fart. Carry on.
