I have this scene in my mind, but I don't remember if it was from a very old comic or a fanfic. Teenager Lena (under a false identity) and Kara were in college together and at some point they had this heart to heart moment. Kara opened with something along the lines of "I know you're Lex Luthor's sister." and Lena answering: "Well, I know you're Superman's cousin." Of course the following sce was like 300 kind of awkward.

I mostly agree, but will take it further. I think Lena has a fascination with Supergirl or Superman (the Luthor obsession with power runs deep) and that explains her unusual friendship with Kara. People like Lena don’t generally cozy up to reporters unless they want something. She needs to manipulate her friendship with Kara to give her an in (or a shield) regarding Supergirl and her cousin.
I don’t buy that Lena is truly on the side of the angels. One has to remember that Lena (and her employee, Sam) sit on top of the old LexCorp. The largest mountain of corrupting power on the planet. Are they truly immune to that?

I tend to think that Lena could be part of the endgame (most probably not this season), and though we have seen her have disputes with her mother, she is still a Luthor.
Peace.

P.S. What did happen to her mother btw? Where is she?

I was wondering the same thing about her mother when I wrote my previous comment. She's up to no good, that much we can be assured. Isn't Kara's adopted father still in her mother's clutches (willingly or not) as well? And he obviously knows Kara is Supergirl.
There is no way to cut the Luthor evil out of Kara or Kal's lives. But the Luthors can be charming when they want something. And while Lena isn't her mother (or Lex for that matter), she is perhaps the most powerful woman on the planet when it comes to the company and the wealth she controls.
Makes sense she'd want to also control the physically most powerful people on the planet. If she can. Kara is far too trusting. Her charm and her curse.

An interesting concept, and puts her buying CatCo into a different light.
OTH, her reaction to Morgan Edge's poisoning plot seemed genuine. Lex would have not cared. "I saved the entire planet!" And then Lex would have killed Edge. And that's BEFORE Edge tried to directly kill him. Same response from her mother.
In fundamental ways Lena is not like Lex or her mother. That might make her more dangerous though. Good intentions and all.
OTH, that doesn't mean she's still not playing a complex long game and is fascinated by Supergirl/Superman. And I fully see her trying to do some dangerous thing that would put her at odds with Supergirl.
I personally flip back and forth on this issue ... and really want to come down on the side that she knows. Because it's almost insulting at this point for her to NOT know. But then when you play back some of her hurt feelings towards Kara, if she'd known Kara was Supergirl, then those feelings are all a fake because she'd know why Kara was flaking out on her...., and thus she's emotionally manipulating people around her.... and maybe the Morgan Edge reaction is fake too... and then holy shit is Lena evil. (or alternatively she's sublimating her hurt that Kara won't confide in her and trying to maniuplate/guilt Kara into coming clean.. that's the non-evil answer)
Here's another question?. Does she know about Sam/Reign? It sounds like Lena took a big risk in hiring her. Remember Lena invented an alien detector .... and might have improved it after the Daxamite invasion and her betrayal by Rhea. .I'd put that thing in my damn doorway and have it scan everyone who came into my office.. And then put it on the doors to LexCorp with a security camera. And tell NOBODY that's what I'd done. Next is updating it to have more range and then Google mapping national city... again telling nobody that's what you're doing. Lena seems to know that the info can be misused, and she trusts herself, not others. Was Sam sublty convinced to try for a job a bit over her qualiications (but not actual ability) at Lex Corp?
And, perhaps Sam's powers are blooming because of proximity contact with Supergirl. Her powers did show up after a brief encounter with Supergirl. Did Lena put them together? She arranged for Sam to go to the girl's night, then ended up at her house after the assassination attempt ... which brought over Kara ....
