Hi all,

I must inform all of you that I'm contemplating the closure of the supergirl section.  Ever since the season 3 break and in fact before it, the comments about the show demonstrates to me that there is no point in keeping a section open if all people can do is bitch about how the show is not for them.  I know it's not what we want but it's something that we have and to have a stream of bitchy comments about how it's for millennials and has storylines that are "preachy" is not what the section is all about.  Constructive criticism is fine, using it as a platform for generational put-downs and being generally negative is not what the section is for.

I would like to see more people make comments about the show so if people want the section to remain I'm going to take an active position of moderating comments if I feel they are continuing in the same vane.

What are your views on this?

I have been generally upbeat.
I am a fan of the show but I am not and have never been a mindless fan.
I my opinion the show has crossed the line TWICE and I pointed it out.

As you pointed out Supergirl got nothing but great reviews for the first half of the season.
Then the writing took a shift.
I believe creators of the show monitor this forum and some actually listen.
Season three is done and over.
If we want to save season four we have to SPEAK UP NOW!

I call it how I see it.

If you go through my reviews of the episodes, if the episode is good, it gets a good review.

But you better believe, if the episode is crap (and that includes being just plain bad, preachy, whatever), I'm gonna call them out on it.

If you just want a place where all people do is sing the praises of the show (whether it merits it or not), is up to you.  Its not something I would be partaking in though.

I agree with Markiehoe, in that some of the show's writers must read some of these posts.  And if you want the show to improve, then you have to be honest.

And I want the show to improve.

I don't watch the show, just to see a pretty woman in a Supergirl costume prancing around.

If thats what you do, then thats your prerogative, and nothing we say should bother you.  Heck, why even read ANY reviews about Supergirl,  Long as she is on TV, doing and saying anything, its fine with you.

I want more from my Supergirl show.  And past examples have shown that critique of the show has yielded positive changes.  So I will continue to give them.

The question then is, What do you want from the show Fats, and what do you want to do about it?

Peace.

/K

It is no Secrect that I am a big Baseball fan.  Babe Ruth was the greatest home run hitter of all time yet even he only got one out of the park once every 10  at bats which is what makes a home run  so special.  My wife and I really enjoy watching Supergirl in part because we never thought that we would see a show like this ever.  I love it when Supergirl hits one, but given the budget constrains  of a CW show, I don't expect one very often.  I also realize that being in my mid-sixties, virtually NO SHOW is being aimed at me and my demographic. The show reflects much of what the real world is doing now as it is set in the present day.  I do not have a problem with that. The cast has always been terrific and the writing and story lines this season have been much better than seasons one and two.  And I for one am going to enjoy this show for as long as it lasts.

I mostly agree at the moment, but I've been all over the map on the writing. But I have to say I really liked the last episode.

Seems a lot of the comments, lately, are just  anti-SJW rants. Perhaps if we all left the culture wars out and focused on the parts of the show that appeal to our tiny demographic of SuperWomanManiacs, then it would be more fun for all.

For my part, I'll do my best.

Not really.  The comments/critiques of the last few episodes have been due to bad-to-terrible writing (in particular the last episode).

Its ok to have messages in your story.  When its written in crayon like a 2-year old, then you better expect it to be called out.

As an example, take the episode 3x15 (i think).  That had the theme of mental illness and how it effects people, and those around them.  That was brilliantly written and performed.

No one expects the show to have a perfect streak, but you can't deny that the show has gone downhill since the hiatus.

If it can reach the heights of the first 12 or so episodes of this season, theres no reason why it can't carry that on more often.  Else, I would suggest cutting the number of episodes per season in half.  Just make each season 10-12 like Netflix do, and assign more budget to each show.  This way, you have less filler and better storytelling.

Peace.

I think all of us just want the best show possible.

A family show.
A show everyone can watch and enjoy.

Not to long ago Star Trek: The Next Generation, Baywatch, Hercules and Xena were the most popular shows in the WORLD.
Everyone tuned in and watched and enjoyed.

Xena especially touched on themes that a Network show would not dare approach.
Watching those shows I never once felt I was preached at or talked down too.
I was entertained and I never once shut it off.

This season of the Flash had white people, black people, gay people and an interracial couple and guess what?
None of that mattered because they told a great story of love, duty, loss and self sacrifice.

I think the Supergirl writers could nip over to the Flash writers and shut up and take notes.

Agree.  The Flash has been, imo, far from stellar this season.

But it handled its themes of, like Markiehoe said, love, duty, loss and self sacrifice, really well.

Look, no one expects Shakespeare-levels of writing.  But bad writing is bad writing and needs to be addressed.

This is so true.  Each of these stayed true to the worlds they had constructed.  And yes, they did contain messages.  But they were delivered within the context of the shows storytelling, and thus, you never felt being preached to.

Supergirls problem is that it doesn't even attempt to do this.  Some episodes, or scenes within episodes, are just flat-out preaching.  And that is the worst form of writing.

Were those shows (Baywatch et al) the paragon of writing on the level of Pinter? NO.  But they weren't trying to be.  They were solid shows that stayed true to the worlds they were creating.  And as such, were entertaining wastes of time.

The writers of Supergirl need to understand that this is a show about a super-powered hero, fighting for "truth, justice and the american way."  Keep your themes around bravery, heroism, sacrifice, team work, duty, and the one true constant, love. Not about fighting racism, "white-privilege", gender equality and all that drivel.

Peace.

Cant avoid politics and culture wars when you're being hit over the head with it. That being said, if theres a shit episode....let me people talk shit. And if the there's a great episode, let people talk great about it. First half of the season got positive reviews, next half went deep into left field.

I think the promise of the season 4 spoilers will keep her section here fairly busy with positive comments.
