I'm watching a re-cap of recent seasons and episodes of Supergirl. (Working from home has it's advantages

I just noticed there are way too many people flying about. Sure, if you are Kryptonian like Kara and her cousin you have that unique, amazing ability, the special power, that edge, but the scriptwriters just seem to be running rough-shod over that.

It is only the ability to fly after all.

Any thoughts?

Certainly compared to some of the other CW shows.

I think there are practical and story concerns at play.  Flying should be a relatively cheap superpower to put on screen, so it allows them to show powers aplenty on a CW budget.  In story terms, if you have one member of the team who can fly and the rest can't then you have logistical difficulties getting everyone to one place.  Unless you do that TV thing where everyone somehow arrives at the same time via flying, motorcycle, boat (with convenient canal), and gentle stroll.

I remember a Spiderman/Captain Marvel team up in the comics where he's bitching about how much he hates being carried, especially with the underarm hold.  I think he builds a special web "sling" for more comfortable transport but it's still humiliating.

I hope there will be more scenes of Kara, levitating in civilian clothes at home or sitting cross-legged floating on the armchair or sofa.

Yeah, we never really had the 'powers at home' from Melissa, apart from taking roasting hot trays out the oven with her bare hands, and checking who is at her door with her x-ray.

I suppose if she can fly across the country in mere minutes, floating above the sofa is no big deal!

In "Lois & Clark, The New Adventures of Superman". Dean Cain, had many scenes, spread throughout the series using his powers.
Now he walks through walls and ceiling, now he writes a report sitting in the Indian style floating, or floating asleep, apart from playing Sport ZeroG with lois lane.

And even Lois Teri Hatcher Lane, I use X-rays as Ultrawoman.

I hoped that in this series there would be at least the same. As anticipated in the scene in which the two Danvers sisters made a night flight getaway, in the first season.

Compared to the potential, this show was probably the biggest disappointment in television history.

The wokeness was sickening, the speciel effects were laughable, but all that could have been forgiven if the show had but one single good superstrength feat, but even that they failed on.

If I had to put together a list of the top 100 best superstrength feats in tv and movie history - a show called Supergirl, with 100+ episodes - would not have one single entry. It was pathetic.

Do I think it is the worst thing to happen to the world? No of course not. It was just a hopelessly bad tv show, that disappointed on all fronts.

PS: Sorry for the negativity, but you asked :)

In the UK so not finished yet, but Supergirl's powers appear to be heat vision (staring) or freeze breath (blowing). For some reason I can't fathom the show has an age rating password on Sky; maybe the ott wokeness mention above by Tanafen.

Seven years ago Supergirl was the hottest topic on this sight.
Now it barely gets a mention.
That speaks volumes.

I have seen every episode.  These last few have been awful especially where Alex gets emotional choosing a 5 year over 8 Billion other people.  The best part of this one was Melisa singing.  I think the first 4 Years were much better than the last 2.  1 have 81 episodes recorded.  Not sure what I will do with them.

in lois and ckark, the new adventure of superman. There were more scenes of Dean Cain, making use of his superpowers, flight, strength or x-ray vision, when he was dressed as Clark Kent. From what has been seen on Supergirl.
It is worth that in Lois and Clark I was more focused on their relationship.

but they couldn't have done the same.In my humble opinion, it has happened almost the same as in 1984 with the film.

super and credible actress as supergirl.

Scripts that don't seem to go anywhere. and that something was missing. especially from the first and second seasons, which were better.

The further the series progressed, the more it was aimed at young kids / early teens. I'd be rolling my eyes when the cast were mentioning Kardashians in casual chat on-screen as if this show was 'real life', but I suppose it might appeal to 13 year olds.
Also it became so dumbed down when the likes of Jon, Alex and Wynn would be discussing a problem at the DEO and it would turn into 'but if we do this, then this will happen, but that will also cause this to happen '
I started doing a re-watch from the start, but turned off before the end of season two. Early teens demographic.

(E.T.A. That sounds harsh as the show was ticking over ok in the early days, but ran out of steam).

I'm a horrifying lefty so the 'wokeness' did not bother me BUT the writing was just. Not good.

It had the modern TV show issue of wanting a full season arc but with only like two or three episodes worth of content for that arc, and ~22x44min episode order to fill. Lots of forced drama to fill out the run time, cringey dialogue, and yeah not enough budget for the action they wanted to do. And I understand a lot of this comes from the limits of making a TV show like this but also it was not very enjoyable or engaging.

Yes, I would have loved to have seen more super strength stuff myself, but I understand this is not like a (porn) show specifically for us lmao.

I have not watched the final season past the first episode. Part of me wants to force myself to now it's all done and I won't have to wait but another part is looking at the mountain of other stuff I want to watch which will probably be good and I just do not think I want to.

I am very happy they did a Supergirl TV show! I think it had cool things in it! Melissa is great as Kara in my opinion! But yeah. It also did a lot badly.

I am sure it will surprise no one here, but I thought the show BECAME complete garbage after season 3.

Which is a shame, as the first season was great fun, and the second season was fairly decent. Apart from the whole "Alex is now a lesbian" crap they forced. Seriously, watch season 1, Alex became a different person in season 2 imo.  In season 1, there was the will she/wont she kind of thing with Max Lord.  Also there was certainly professional history with Martian Manhunter (that was never really explored as far as I know).

I still think the first 10 or so episodes of season 3 (the Reign story season), was the BEST the series ever put out. "Midvale" is the BEST episode of the whole show.  And actually one of the best episodes of a show ever imo.  It was that good imo.

Then, the woke factor got pumped up to 11.  You can actually see the point itself when they made a HUGE point of having a transgender superhero on the show, played by a transgender actor.  Oh, and they did this by taking an EXISTING character (thats been around for nearly 30 years in comics) and changing them.  Why not just make a new character up for the show?

After that I tuned out.  Haven't seen the last two seasons, but from what I hear it just got worse and worse.

Which like I said earlier, and I think others have mentioned, is sad, as the show had great promise.

The best thing about the show I can muster - Melissa was EXCELLENT as Kara/Supergirl.  It almost like one of those roles you can't really think of anyone else playing now (though Helen Slater, back when she was 19 I think, probably captured the comic image perfectly.)

And that first half of season 3 - gold.

I'm sure i could go on, but I will leave it at that.

Peace.

/K

Maybe its just hard to keep generating fresh story ideas after a few seasons.

The radical transformation of the show halfway through season 3, and the elimination of any real action from season 4 on were very purposeful actions. The first executive producer was fired halfway through season 3 for mistreating staff, particularly women. From that point on the show turned into an embodiment of woke concerns. Now, wokeness needn't be a disqualifying goal, but the Supergirl writers were so overt and unsubtle with their messaging that the show became unwatchable. And then a while later Melissa revealed that she had been in an abusive relationship. Cue the elimination of fight scenes. I'm incredibly sympathetic to Melissa's situation here, but unfortunately it's a show about a superhero. If the decision is taken to respect her history and not subject her to pretend violence, the show is going to suffer for it. The final two seasons were almost entirely action-free, with one extremely obvious exception. At least once per episode, Supergirl would be subjected to a force/wave/beam that would send the stuntwoman flying. THAT was what passed for action for two seasons.

The writing somehow managed to get worse and worse, with absurd, nonsensical mcguffins galore and every character becoming a superhero. Just dreadful dreck.

At least we all have the first two and a half seasons.

The Woke stuff never bothered me, given I accepted early on that the show was aimed at a youthful demographic where that's simply the way most of them think. I'm a child of the 60's, and had many different ideas of my own then, and I've long accepted that youth culture and old fart culture are radically different, I figure we're lucky if we get to experience both in life. So the fact that my cultural framework was out of alignment with the show was expected and not a bother.

It was the poor writing in general that bother me, and even more the lost possibilities for properly exploiting the opportunities to portray a Kryptonian female on Earth -- now that bugs the heck out of me. Melissa could have been wonderful at portraying a deep-dive into the joys and challenges of being a Kryptonian living among humans. To revel in her powers and what she could do with them. The ways she could make a real difference.

I don't think that has to be so-called "SWM porn", but simply getting closer to the comics.

Anyway, I decided the series was a muddled mess and a huge missed opportunity after Season 1, specifically in that it failed to properly explore my favorite character in a way that made sense to me. But a lot of that is probably my peculiar ideas of what SG could/should be.

One has to accept that popular weekly serial TV is aimed at a different cultural group as you get older. And CW, more than anything else I've found, exemplifies that.

Thank goodness for Amazon and HBO Max and Netflix and many others which still map fairly well to my sensibilities. For example, I've really enjoyed the recent remake of DUNE.

Now THAT'S my kind of movie. Lady Jessica of the Atreides was handled quite well. A   Bene Gesserit   concubine   who is also a supreme warrior, which few realize until it's too late, and as Paul's mother, one hell of a mentor and teacher. She qualifies as a superwoman to me. Back when reading the books, she was part of my earliest conceptualization for Velorians, who also are concubines, yet are powerful and pivotal and world-changing in ways that one would not expect of a mere concubine. And as the Fremen discovered near the end of the movie, she is not someone to underestimate.

Hope remains...

Shadar

Lady Jessica is one my all time favorite characters in literature :)  I LOVE Lady Jessica :)

I've seen the recent Dune film, and as a HUGE fan of the books, I will say that it is a great adaptation if you have NOT read the books.  If you have read the books, the stuff that is missing left me feeling like a bit sad.

The other thing that I didn't really like WAS Lady Jessica.  They just didn't capture her strength imo.  The famous "gob jabar" scene for example.  Yes, she is concerned for her son, but Lady Jessica NEVER cried from what I remember.  She was a friking badass :P

Anyway, Dune is a topic for another thread :)

Peace.

P.S.  Yes, I LOVE the Bene Gesserit also :D

Agreed. People here are talking about the first two seasons being good, and I'm wondering if they watched the same show that I did. I watched the whole first season and beginning of season 2, just hoping it would begin to live up to its potential, but it just never did. I gave up on it before it even got to the parts that other people are saying were the downturn.

Yep.
I couldn’t agree more. I’m not even totally convinced that if we ended up squaring off, I may be able to kick her ass. Very poor job on portraying her as actually SUPER. She’d fight a bad guy and be fairly even, then her sister comes in….and is just as even!? SORRY WHAT? It was a very poor show. Especially for how long it was on

The writing in the first season was poor, but livable because the stories tended to be focused on the titular character and there was action and suspense. Seasons two and three started moving the focus off of Supergirl, which sucked. But season four, and especially seasons five and six, things just went completely haywire. It was unwatchable. I'd fast forward most of the episodes looking for shreds of action, because actually watching the show made me want to throw things. Heavy things. I think the last two seasons of Supergirl are the worst fully funded, regularly aired seasons of television ever made. It's a shame. Such an incredible fall from the amazing pilot.

I guess it really depends on what your expectations were for it.

Bert nails it exactly.  The show was never going to be Shakespeare, but at least the show was focused on Supergirl and her adventures.

There is a WORLD of difference between those first 2 1/2 - 3 seasons and what came after.

Peace.
