Professional poker has always been an impossible game for a machine to play at the highest level, given poker involves bluffing and other gamemanship behavior and emotions and risk analysis that isn't just a matter of the cards dealt.

In other words, low hands can beat high hands if you fake out your opponent. Mathematics does not rule. The entire process can get very involved and is a very human activity, with facial expressions, etc. all a part of it.

Now they've developed an AI that can beat anyone.

The claim is that their new algorithms can be used for non-entertainment purposes as well.

True, but nothing of it is set on stone yet.

Neural networks came from very early attempts to emulate neurons. Neurology and computer science divorced a long time ago as there is still no functional model of how the animal brain works. What is Intelligence? The answer is still in the philosophy field. Most of the present attempts to create a self evolving AI are based on Rewards and Punishments rules. My guts tell that it shouldn't be right approach, as an advanced AI would try just to break/cheat these rules.

Maybe AI development towards full Intelligence will hit a wall.

We'll only know when it hits.

Why do we keep making robots that look like people?

An interesting video explanation:

Of course, I want to know when they start looking like my avatar to the right.

We are not mentally prepared to deal with beings beyond our little dome, be AI or Aliens. Dealing with robots that look human supposedly would solve this. I don't think it will. It only creates uncanny valleys. Which is the worst result when there is no other actual reason but to build empathy.

But I think that one day we'll be able to deal with 'unnatural' creatures.

Robots don't need to be in human form to build empathy. Anyone played The Lab in SteamVR? There is the cutest robot dog ever. and it doesn't even have a head

Everyone one that plays with him/her, loves it

Empathy comes more from communication, body language, and other subconscious things, than just appearance. Something can be familiar and yet completely alien.

Surely, in a possible future it wouldn't stop me from asking the AI God to build a Charlize Theron clone with superstrength.

Yes, yes, my hand is up, see, both hands, yes.

A late 20's Charlize superbot, please.

But only when it can talk and look and move like this:
