Hello Everyone,

I am formally notifying all members that from today any post in this site that has anything to do with current politics or has to do with anything political, in general, will now be locked and moved to a new section.

This action has been made a necessary action due to a number of threads being hijacked with some members bringing politics into threads and it has caused a number of other members getting in touch with me and expressing their distaste at what is happening (one of which is a true legend of not just this site but of our little genre). along with their desire for their accounts to be deleted.

I can not allow that to continue

.This site is about girls with powers and not about the current state of the US or any other country's political standing, if you want a section for that I can make one up otherwise I'm requesting demanding that you keep it out of the threads, I'm hoping that this notification and the actions mentioned in the post will combat the problem but if it doesn't then I will start using other options available to me.

I HATE that I have to post this and take the actions within, but I would rather take the action and get non-posters to start posting than get them requesting that they have their account deleted, I have no idea how many accounts are now sitting inactive because people have walked away because of it

.Lastly, this is not an attack on anyone or a group of members nor is this an attack on people's free speech, this is a post to stop the site from dying because I have seen sites die over stuff like this I've not spent thousands of hours keeping the site going for it to die over something so petty as politics taking over a site.

Seeing that one of the main reasons I love SWM is escaping reality I am a fan of this idea. Politics of today is so divided its scary. No matter what your leanings in the real world, everyone with a mania for superwoman should feel welcome to come here and explore their mania.

Lets check our political views at the door, and enjoy the common ground we all have here as people who share a love of this genre.

As I’m not aware of any other political content, other than the comments I made about the  Supergirl TV show. And that the point of those comments were complaints, that the Supergirl TV show had too much political content. I am about to go on a wicked rant that will likely result in the deletion of my account and the omission of my stories. Before I do that, I’ll leave it to you, Fats? Were my comments inappropriate? What other comments were made, on what other thread, that resulted in this thread? What specifically did you find inappropriate?

I am a long term lurker of this site. And I very much appreciate the content that people put up here stories and posts.

Not saying that anyone is doing this but generally speaking; treat other members like a new aquiantance or work colleague. Would you talk politics and religion with an acquaintance or colleague.

Hate to see people leave or get upset over of all things POLITICS.

I couldn't care less about politics. In the end politics mostly serves self interests and lobby groups.

Can we all kiss and make up now and be friendly aquiantances again.

As someone that talks about politics all day long, I have to say I really appreciate this attitude. This place needs to be a escapist safe haven, where the only thing that matters and on subject is our love for superpowered women. I completely support this

Imagine two girls, who happen to be very super and very sexy, are filmed having a conversation.  A very controversial conversation. A fictional fight breaks out, and it has all the Super hero dressings on top. Heat Vision to the chest, Uppercuts that send the other girl to the upper stratosphere. Super breath that turns the back ground things and people into ice cubes. This goes on for some time.

Now I'm completely happy commenting on the girls, how they look, and acted....But your saying i'm not allowed to comment on what the girls were discussing, prior to their fight?

The conversation happening on SWM was so tame...so mild....no one was fighting, simply expressing a point of view. The only argument, if you could call it that...Was, does Supergirl inject politics in their show....A fucking fair question...ANd on topic!

What year is this? Where Am I? Who are you people?

What Imbecile complained? Who's the SJW...Show yourself!

And Ironically, regards to the political theme, of what was being discussed....Was, that if you say anything, about the brand of politics that's being routinely forced down your throat. Some SJW creep, will DEMAND that you stop.

Even more Ironic, is that by posting this thread....YOU MADE IT POLITICAL!.

Ok....Because, I haven't even started yet....I'm sure I'll be getting the boot. After that happens, i'm hoping that my stories be deleted from story bank.

Sorry to those I spoke to regarding the next few stories I intended on posting...but....I die on this hill

You made the right call Fats.

As the old electrical engineer in me might have once said, "we got too much Q in that circuit".

A high-Q oscillator (underdamped) will ring very loudly and for a long time with only a small input. Think electric guitar with too much feedback.

That's what is so dangerous about talking politics. The Q is very high.

- Rant Mode Activated! -

Lastly, this is not an attack on anyone or a group of members nor is this an attack on people's free speech,

No matter how much you tell yourself this, doesn't make it true. But hey, if it helps you sleep at night.

Ironically enough, this was exactly what one of the topics discussed in the thread that caused you to post this was.

"Quick,, opposing views.  SHUT IT DOWN!"

I get if the thread itself was started as a political one, but the discussion was in relation to a TV SHOW called Supergirl.  You know, the alter you all bow down too.

Some people come here to look at Japanese schoolgirls with a caption describing how super they are.  Some come to read about women who can lift a bajillion tons of weight and not break a sweat.

I enjoyed coming here to discuss superhero themes and stories of superheroines in film and tv.  Guess you can only do that if singing its praises, 'cause you believe they are all amazing and stellar.

Not gonna bother doing that if I have to watch what I say.  Plenty other forums out there.

Which incidentally, I have NEVER come across a forum where such a request was DEMANDED.  Congratulations on breaking new ground.

You sir, are then ENEMY of free speech.  Rather then engaging in discourse, you just shut it down.

And if I am being honest, the discussion was quite civil and well reasoned, as many such discussion that have, apparently, lead you to this action were.

So, enjoy your safe space.

Peace.

/K

P.S.  This will probably be delete and/or my account suspended.  But it needed to be said.  Good day all.

OK, I think there needs to be a clarification on what my intentions are, it seems people have taken what I have said in the wrong sense.

I'm stopping political discussion in threads dedicated to things that have nothing to do with politics, I'm not stopping it all together, if you look at my OP you will notice that I said that if you wanted a place to talk about that I can set up a section for it.  Just say the word and it will be done. What I want to stop is a discussion on a TV show being turned in to a debate on the show's political position and that being an avatar for a debate on current real-world politics.

I agree that the show has been preachy, I almost stopped watching the second ep over it, but having a thread which should be talking about the storyline, the people, the show's direction of travel being hijacked is not what I want to see.

I also have to say that I'm not taking this action in isolation, I've spoken to the other mods and admins and have their agreement as to what I should do.

Kikass2014 - I used the term "Demanded" simply as a way to express my position in the strongest way possible, free speech will always be welcome here but not if it hurts one another, there has to be that limit on it.

I want to address you DKC in this last part, I can't understand why you feel that this is an attack on you, I want to say in the most unequivocal terms possible, it's not about you it has never been about you and it will never be about you, I'm trying to keep this site as a safe place for people to post their views on not just SG but on all the shows and I want to keep this place a site for people to escape the drudgery of real life and enjoy and share their fantasies.

My very last point on this is this, I WILL NOT delete an account over this, it has been 5 years since I last had to ban someone, I hope that I don't have to do that again.

Okay, hold your horses for a minute. I think that we are all on the same page here.
As you said there is a problem with the Supergirl TV show delivering too much political content and I think most of our user will agree on this count. The problem is how this tend to spill upon our community making some threads clogged with people pushing their own ideas on politics way too far and way too hard. I rarely, if ever, contribute to the Supergirl TV section because I'm way behind with the episodes, but some threads on the second half of Season 2 were so clogged with this kind of posts that I had to force myself to watch the episodes. Why? Because, for better or worst, I'm interested in what  you guys consider good or bad supergirl content.

The problem comes from the fact that in some cases it seem that this kind of content takes precedence over anything else. In other forums I've seen people debating for 10 to 20 pages about how racist Black Panther was or how much they disliked Wonder Woman for being too pro-feminist without even saying if they enjoyed the movie!
What we are trying to combat here is not you voicing a legitimate complain about a story including too much political content, it's for this community to become a battlefield.

In this case I think you can voice your opinion and it would be relevant but, as I said above, we are trying to discourage such a thread from becoming a shouting match. We already tried to ask politely and privately to some users to lower the tones, but this never sorted any kind of effect in the long run. Hence we were forced to take a more forceful action.

@ Fats

Thank you and I appreciated the fact that you posted and clarified your position.

In fairness, I (personally), have not come across any hostility towards anyones point of view.  I've never been hostile towards anyone, and I've never really felt anyone be hostile to me.

In a discourse, certainly one which is a critique, we are not all going to be singing from the same hymn sheet so to speak.  Just because we disagree on something, doesn't mean we hate the person per se.  Ofc I can only speak for myself in this regard.

When discussing things like story, or aesthetics in general, I MUCH prefer the person whos view differs from mine to debate WHY they differ.  Sure, we might not come to an agreement, but its better then saying "nah lets not talk about that".  Hell, I may be the one that changes to your point of view with regards to the topic.  It happens :)

Which brings us to Supergirl the TV Show.  I would be hard pressed to extract the political messaging embedded in that show from its story.  Woodclaw mentions Black Panther and Wonder Woman, and I would say they fall into the same category.  Every work of art has political subtexts - its the nature of the medium.  I think it gets focused on so much now, BECAUSE it is no longer a subtext, but overt and in your face.  Particularly in regards to the texts mentioned.  As such, it occupys more of the discourse on that particular work.

I think a sub forum for political discussion is a good idea in theory.  But I don't think it would a) see much use; and b) be necessary.   The topic arises out of the piece being discussed.  Its not always the case.  I've written many reviews on Supergirl episodes over the years, where I focused more on the aesthetic of the piece.  However, when the messaging is so dominant in an episode, its hard to avoid it.  So you're gonna get discussions of that nature from time to time, due to the nature of the beast.

I'll leave with this quote, that perhaps best sums up what has been discussed so far:

"“If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.”  - George Orwell

Peace.

Thank you for this, Fats.

As a suggestion: why don't you go ahead and do as you suggested? Make a separate section for people who have political laundry to air. Then, when someone decides to go off the rails, you can simply move their post/topic into the political section. Generally, I don't see any reason to delete posts unless they become personal attacks. Attacks on a political position may get heated, but, provided there's a space for them, I can avoid them with impunity by simply not sticking my face into the grinder.

I agree that Politics, by itself, has no place on SWM mania. The politics that had been discussed was in relation to the Supergirl show.

I love discussing the inner workings of a story, the politics of the story, if you will. A good example of this is DS9, and the Federation opting to use chemical weapons to entirely wipe out a civilization, because they were losing a war. There's a good debate to be had there.....One such debate, is how much of a loser I sound like for debating the politics of Star trek =) As my friends are always be quick to remind me. But, like I tell them....I can't help myself.

Unfortunately, when discussing Supergirl - you can't help but tread into real life territory. Another point to this is Supergirl's Red Son theme they're going with....Are they going to stick to the Superman comic line (I already know they wont) Or, is Russia going to engage in election meddling? Seeing as, USA needs a new president......Who wants to bet that, that's where their going?

Fats, one of the first things I thought when I read this was, why hadn't you sent me a PM. You clarified. That it wasn't about me, and it'll never be about me. Perhaps I haven't read enough threads to notice that this was a problem. I completely agree, if I were to open a thread, with the intent of discussing and engaging in real world politics. This is not the forum for it. So I apologize if I grossly misinterpreted your remarks.
