Stan was an icon.

I wonder what his last filmed cameo is going to be (he filmed a lot of them in advance).

I'm currently reading Marvel Comics: The Untold Story.  Lot's of Stan Lee (natch).

A great character. I like that. Sad day, but feeling fortunate for what he helped create.

"Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened."

As much as I questioned time and again Stan's idea on female superheroes, he had reinveted the genre and many of us won't be here without him.

He saw comic book writers and artists go from shunned outcasts and an embarrassment among the writing community, to eventually being revered and celebrated. He introduced the idea of superheroes with realistic personalities, who had all the emotional and mental problems of normal people, often amplified, as one might expect of someone with special abilities.

He also worked before the Comics Code, back when comic books were regarded as evil advertising from the Devil, to suffering through the period of silly child-only comic books during the Comics Code heyday, and then he led the way into comic books for grownups that tackled adult themes.

He saw it all, and he drove a lot of the better changes. Amazingly, he spent nearly 80 years working on comic books and related themes.

How amazing is that?

Stan's death caused so much traffic that Facebook went down for a while.

Talk about an homage... crashing Facebook. Stan would have been thrilled.

Stan and Marvel saved the industry and breathed new life into it and brought it even more into cultural importance. Really that's why even this small community even exists..

one of the things about Stan Lee is he seems like a really great guy who the more famous he got, the better a person he became.  It normally runs in the inverse, fame makes monsters out of most people.
