So, that's Jimmy Olsen away for Season 5. Most would agree he never really fitted the show, apart from his introduction as Supergirl's,friend and a colleague of Kara's.

Him becoming Guardian was a sign that they had absolutely no idea what to do with the character.

They should have played him hard as Kara's love interest. 

I mean, come one, this is Jimmy Olsen. and he's been in love with Superman from day one, but they're straight so that doesn't work.

When he came to National City because of Kara (on Clark's advice), he was more than infatuated with her. She was Superman in a skirt. They could have gotten great mileage out of his obsession for Kryptonians. After all, he was the very first person who knew that Kara Danvers really was Supergirl, and he knew that before he lquit the Dailly Planet and left Metropolis.

Instead, the writers played him safe and he migrated into the ranks of those who would like to be her boyfriend. I'm sure they struggled each week with what to do with James before someone came up with the really awful Guardian idea. The fact that the others writers and showrunner went with it said they didn't have a clue what else to do with him. 

Good for him in deciding to stop the bleeding.
