Don’t mess with ‘Wonder Woman’…

Especially when it comes to the US box office.

According to Forbes, ‘Wonder Woman’ has just passed $330.533 million at the US domestic box office… and that means it’s surpassed ‘Batman V Superman’.

“Wonder Woman is now the biggest-grossing DC Films release in North America as of yesterday,” they revealed. “The Gal Gadot/Chris Pine adventure earned another $2.685 million yesterday, down 3% from yesterday and 33% from last Thursday. That brings the film’s domestic total, after exactly four weeks in theaters, to $330.533m, or just above the $330.366m cume of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.”

Weekend domestic estimates have it now at $346M domestically and $708M worldwide.

Right now it sits at #11 of comic book movies all-time (domestic gross) and poised to probably move into the top 10.

Not too shabby.....

It's not quite matched the Foreign sales of BvS but it sure has beaten it domestically. It also hasn't touched Dark Knight or Dark Knight Rises, so it's the #3 in DC movies (#1 in DCEU). All that looks like really great news for WW and, hopefully, for female led action movies. I'm really looking forward to Atomic Blonde even if it's at a John Wick level instead of Wonder Woman. I hope it makes a splash like John Wick did.

WW only has about 17M to go before cracking the top 10, so it'll probably do that. Though I wonder if viewers aren't yet tired of Spider-Man reboots, Spider-Man Homecoming will boot it out again. Spider-man Movies have tended to do really well, even when they aren't good. People seem to like the new Spider-Man. He was really well liked in Civil War just like WW was in BvS.

Awesome news! I'm sure it will catch Suicide Squad's worldwide total at $750 M (Estimate) but I doubt if it will catch BvS's.

Hopefully this will lead to more big budget superheroine movies from both Marvel and DC. Captain Marvel is next...

Agreed, I'm SOOOOOOO tired of Spiderman, but I must say this one looks pretty good from what little I've seen! I think it'll most likely surpass WW at the box office, if we're being honest. Still only with 4 complete weeks under her belt, I'd estimate (based on similar movies) that she probably has another 35-40M maybe left domestically if it hangs in theatres, declining over the next 6 weeks. That would probably keep it around 9 or 10 on the Top 10 comic movies of alltime......at least till Justice League (or possibly Thor 3) comes out this Fall. :)

"Now that Wonder Woman is a massive success, that kind of badassery just got carte blanche. It means Diana Prince can now thank Bruce Wayne for that sweet note he sent her at the beginning of her movie and tell him, “Thanks. I’ll be leading the Justice League now.” It means Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel—already slated to be the most powerful superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe—gets to have a movie that could leave the Iron Mans and Captain Americas in the dust. It means that Whedon’s Batgirl movie has a real shot, and if Marvel was ever wavering on whether or not to give Black Widow a standalone film, now might be the time to green-light it. And it means Rian Johnson should take a good, long look at his latest cut of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Because this time around, Rey gets all the hero shots she deserves."

Lynda Carter rips into James Cameron's criticism. Send your terminator over to her, James - I don't think it will have a chance in hell!

Heres the thing for me, I actually get what Cameron is saying with his remarks.

Patty Jenkins has been hyped to shit for directing an action film, yet Kathryn Bigelow was making them before Jenkins even dreamed of picking up a camera. Heck Bigelow won an Oscar for directing an action flick!
So in that regard I get it. There is nothing ground breaking in that.

I also get where he is coming from with his contrasting to Sarah Connor. The main narrative in the media was/is how WW is this strong, independent woman. But she doesn't really do a whole lot as a character to exemplify that. And to be fair, there is a lot more objectification of Gadot then Hamilton (see the so called legendary "No Man's Land" scene. By contrast, there is no such scene, or even close to it in T2).

But the thing is - WW is suppose to be a sex object! So, inadvertently, Jenkins, while trying to steer clear of that, nailed it LOL :D

Anyway, given the choice between taking Gadot's WW or Hamiltons Sarah Connor..........I'll take Carters WW any day of the week and twice on Sunday :D

Just my 2 cents :)

Peace.

Cameron is a Bully and Hollywood is afraid of him.
He should keep his mouth shut.

I am glad Lynda Carter/ Wonder Woman stood up to him and told him off.

Yes Sarah Conner is pretty badass in T2
She pumps and fires a shotgun with one hand in her "No man's land" scene.

However she is hardly the first female action hero in movies.

Love, was there ever, ever, EVER any doubt? *squee!!!* I'm so happy for Diana and Gal Gadot!

The world was ready and willing for Wonder Woman. It was time. She was around way too long and never had a cinematic as far as I know. The ironic thing is that Supergirl got a cinematic before Wonder Woman.

I wonder how Carol's movie will do? I'm kinda jealous, female heroes now getting Hollywood deals now....

Ugh. This. I saw this earlier and just ignored it. I'd thought James Cameron would be better than that.

I'm reading more about it and I'm getting pissed off! Why can we have all good things?! Yes, we know the problems of Hollywood with its gender inequalities, but, you're one of the highest grossing directors in history, why are you taking aim towards Diana's movie?

And of course Mr. Cameron doubles down on his criticism. Obviously he knows everything about strong women.

And yes, I'm holding back. Ugh! I need a f[bleep]ing donut.

I don't normally disagree with you Markiehoe, but how is this "her No Man's Land" scene?

But anyway, Cameron is hugely egotistical, and while I feel his comments do have some merit, the fact that he is referencing himself, kinda dilutes the points he is trying to make.

Peace.

Well she has seen a lot of things and has has enough.
Also an innocent (her underage son) was in deathly peril.
Sarah Conner advances when others would run.
Her "No man's land" scene IMO.

Ok. I can see what you mean in that context.

I think where we may differ is that, my point was Sarah Connor isn't dressed in a sexy faux-swimsuit costume, seductively (yet confidently) walking in slow-mo towards the camera*. It isn't necessarily the act she is performing (which I agree does correlate, in part), it is how it is depicted.

The camera also doesn't linger on Hamilton as she is performing the scene, whereas in WW, we the (male) audience are, like a voyeur, undressing Gadot as she marches forward. Going back to Cameron's point, I think this is what he seems to be referring too. Whether that is right or wrong, I'm not debating here. Just stating what I believe the point he was trying to make is.

Peace.

/K

*Note: For the record, there is nothing wrong with a woman walking seductively, yet confidently, towards a camera in slow-mo (especially if they look like Gal Gadot) LOL :P

For those curious Wonder Woman is Now 5 in the top 10 superheros of all time.

Which means its done better then:
Superman(all of them)
Guardians of the Galaxy ( 1 and 2)
Iron man(all of them)
Captian America(all of them)
Spiderman(all of them)
Thor(all of them)

The only 4 movies that have done better are the Last Two Dark Knight movies and the Two Avengers movies.. Its 414 million to Batman Rises 448 and i don't think it can do better then that in the time it has-but i i didn't think it would beat Gaurdians 2.

(Its also for those curious the #1 World War movie ever)

WW was cheaper to make than most of those other movies. It's $100M cheaper to make than BvS for example--- and I'm pretty sure they spent less on advertising, than BvS. It was cheaper to produce than GotG2, BvS, Iron Man 3, Spider-Man Homecoming, Dark Knight, Avengers Movies (+100M).

In fact, if you count production budget as a negative, WW made more money (domestically) than Age of Ultron, Dark Knight, and The Dark Knight Rises. She still loses to The Avengers.

And to be completely pendantic this is for Domestic totals only. I hear the accounting on Foreign totals is not 1:1 with domestic (less of that actual money makes it into the studio hands), and differs for each foriegn market so probably no one outside the studio accounting department knows the REAL number. With that caveat, BvS, Spider-Man Homecoming, Spider-Man 3, Spider-Man (but it'll lose soon), Captain America, Iron Man 3, and GotG 2 all have higher Foreign + Domestic. Some are > 1 Billion (> 200M over WW).

Also, Wonder Woman had legs, she kept making money for a LONG period of time, this is great for her total, but doesn't make the studio as much money. The other movies made the bulk of their money in the first few weeks, and quickly tapered off. (You can see this on Box Office Mojo if you go into the daily or weekend totals). The problem is the studio takes more of the ticket price in the first few weeks, and that tapers off to give more money to the theater. Theaters LOVE long running movies that keep pulling people in. They'll want more movies like Wonder Woman. ;-) The studio likes them too, as they're still making money and it's awesome advertising, but given a choice they'd rather the movie pulled in most of its money in the first few weeks.

From one article I read, it shifts from the theater keeping 20-25% in the first weeks, to 45-55% in later weeks. That 20% loss to the studio adds up for a movie like Wonder Woman. (Sometimes the studio can take 100% in the first week!). After 4+ weeks, the theatre can sometimes keep 80% of the take.

For instance at the end of the 2nd Weekend (Domestic):

Bvs: $260M
WW: $206M

I wonder how this translates over into DVD/Blu-Ray sales. I'd think a long-running movie indicates a passionate audience and therefore, better streaming/blu-ray/dvd sales. And probably better toy sales.

BUT, the domestic numbers ARE very impressive and they go a LONG WAY to destroy the "women in action movies/sci fi/super hero movies" bullshit the studio heads have been touting around. (This is the real demon that must be slain.)

I wonder how good WW toys sales were?

I only mention this as the TRUE # is one we'll never see, the # on the secret internal balance sheet inside the Studio. The one that knows all the real numbers, and how much money was REALLY made. If WW's internal numbers aren't as good as this domestic ranking, they'll judge it accordingly.

For a while, the Animated WW movie was just behind Group Movies and 1 each of the Batman Superman movies, it was #5, but DC execs kept saying "it didn't make enough money" and used it as an excuse to nix a Batgirl animated movie as well as a sequel. It eventually did fall in the rankings (currently #8), though I wonder what the re-release of it has done for its #'s now (#'s are yet on the page).

#'s for DC animated movies if anyone cares: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DC_Universe_Animated_Original_Movies

Just saying the WW Animated movie did REALLY WELL and it was dissed for it. They said "Slower sales", i.e. it seems to have sold like WW at the movies .. people kept buying it over a long period of time, but it quickly was pretty high in the rankings. It just shows the Bullshit ran deep.

So we're back to me being super-happy about the Box Office Mojo showing only Domestic rankings for movies, because it changes the zeitgeist to "Wonder Woman did REALLY WELL, better than X and Y!" That's what we need to get perceptions to change. Even if the dark heart of the studio still believes men-led properties are "better", they know they can make some serious bank backing some good solid female-led movies, and that's all we need.

Let's hope that Captain Marvel kicks some serious ass to keep the streak going.
