Red Sonja is getting a new movies, supposedly to capitalize on WW's success.

Great news for two reasons:

1) Red Sonja is hella fun, and will be especially so if they cast someone suitable Amazonian.

2) It proves that the halo effect from WW is real, and that it will drive studios to try and share in that success by giving us more "comic book superheroine" style movies.

In our modern PC world as long as Red Sonja kills a lot of men and wears complete chainmail armor she will be OK for the masses.

Sheena will be so PC it will be Sheena in name only.
I doubt she will be wearing animal skins let alone the skin of an endangered species.
Oh, she will kill a lot of men.

I don't know. Just doesn't feel the same without Arnold Schwarzenegger playing a wizard.

I wonder how many comics fans know that Howard's Red Sonja fought in Austria rather than Hyboria....

I leveraged off that history for my story, Red-headed Devil, which is in the SWM library.

It's a WWII combat-oriented appearance of Red Sonja in her hometown in the Ukraine, where she reappears (thanks to protection of the Goddess) after nearly a millennium in 'hibernation'.

If you like the idea of Red Sonja fighting Nazis and German Tiger tanks with her sword and bare hands, you might like this story.

Here's the direct link to the SWM library:

While most of Howard's work (and his main character Conan) was set in Hyboria in the time after Atlantis sunk and before history began (10,000 to 32,000 years ago, depending on which reference you use), the short story he wrote to introduce Red Sonja was based on a historical character from the 16th century, in an around Vienna.

Given that the movie Red Sonja featured our former governor of California as a Conan-like character, and given that Schwarzenegger had played Conan before in a near identical role, it's easy to confuse her history.

I confuse it in the story I wrote (Red-Headed Devil) where I attached her to the ancient land that later became the Ukraine. Oops.

But whether my Red Sonja character is from the 16th century or from ten millennia earlier than that, it doesn't really matter. She's really old but hasn't changed a bit. The fun was injecting her into a modern (WWII) setting.

It will be interesting to see how the upcoming movie depicts her background and abilities, and the timeframe of the setting for the movie.

I just thought it was fun to bring her forward into the 20th century.

According to Roy Thomas (who wrote the first comic adaptation of Red Sonja), he based Red Sonja off both Red Sonya _and_ another character of Howards from the 16th Century.

So, while everyone still credits Howard (as they really should) at the end of the day, comic-Sonja was never Howard-story Sonya. (Also note the spelling change in her name.)

So, i'd say playing with her history, her time, her locations, are all part of Red Sonja's DNA. Not only do I always think it's OK to change a character for a new medium, it's even more so for Sonja because it's why she exists. Red Sonja is far more famous than Red Sonya or Dark Agnes of Chastillion. (I had to look the second name up as I can never remember it.)

Also, for people concerned about "changing Sonja's appearence" (re; Chainmail bikini.) Here's some of the first images of Red Sonja. She didn't get the chainmail bikini until a few issues later. And while it did become iconic, it wasn't there at her origin. OTH, similarly the Bob Kane/Bill Finger Batman used a gun, and Superman could not fly (trivia: he only flies because flying was easier to animate than jumping). Characters DO change from their origin. What's important is to make sure the essence of the character is correct after you adapt them. It then becomes a discussion if the bikini chainmail is essential to Red Sonja or not. Just as some retellings leave out rape and/or goddesses from her origin (and thus the "not sleep with a man unless they best her in battle" part).

I went looking for the first published images of Sonja in the famous outfit, and found this page with scans from the issue:

diversionsofthegroovykind.blogspot.com/2...ed-sonjas-metal.html

As for the movie, at this stage, I'll believe it when I see it. There isn't even a writer yet. Lot's of movies have failed to get made that were farther along.

But then, I was skeptical of Wonder Woman until they had an actor, a writer, and a director too. I'll be a bit skeptical and pleasantly surprised if it happens.

Sounds like her character has been tweaked a lot over the years and by many different people.

I went further in my story than apparently anyone else has, and made her bulletproof. My thinking was that if she's been fighting with swords her whole life, and she doesn't have a mark or scar on her, then swords and knives and arrows and clubs and whatever can't hurt her.

So, when bringing her to the 20th century with its guns, the same applies.

And it made for a better story for this forum, IMHO.

I sure as heck know which Red Sonja I want to to see on the screen!

Do a Google image search and see which interpretation of Red Sonja's costume pops up the most.

I have not seen Thor Ragnarok yet. (tomorrow night for me)

This is Valkyrie as i remember her in the comics.

And this is the boring Politically Correct movie costume that shows up in a quick google search

To avoid spoilers I did not dig to deep.
There is another sexier leather outfit briefly featured from the back but the white outfit was the one most hit.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, there is no way in hell an actress will wear the EXACT depiction of a comic costume in a movie (unless you are Olivia Munn and desperate).

Sure it would be fantastic as eye candy for the male audience (and maybe even some of the female audience too, who knows). But it is IMPRACTICAL on every other level.

Examples I can site are -

Liz Olsen as Scarlet Witch. I would love to see Liz Olsen in that, she is a sexy woman. But I can also understand why SHE would not want to wear it, and also, it could look pretty goofy on screen.

Valkyrie, as you site above. That costume would NOT work on screen imo, and Tessa Thompson is a good looking woman. The one in the film is pretty nicely done.

As far as Red Sonja goes, nope, can't see them going that "chain mail bikini" idea either (much as I would want them to lol).

For me, like Twice said, its about capturing the essence of the character, both IN their character and costume.

Hela's costume was really well done. Captured the comic book version really well (and still showed off Cate's sexy figure), right down to the head piece and her sword.

Scarlet Witch captured the palette and Valkyrie captured the essence (angelic armor).

Different mediums, different requirements. Some costumes work, some don't. Its just way of things imo.

Peace.

/K

P.S. I'm not saying its impossible, but sure, if you can find an actress to wear Sonja mail bikini and not make it come off cheap or cheesy on screen, hey, I'm all in :)

All that sounds pretty reasonable to me, esp when you're translating her into the modern age. Sounds like a good starting point.

The current Red Sonja comic by Amy Chu has Sonja in the modern world... Sonja got kicked into the future by Kulan Gath. Not the first time it's happened (a famous Marvel Team Up where Sonja possesses Mary Jane Watson, and later again in a Spider-Man/Red Sonja mini-series.) This differs in we have normal Sonja in the modern world, though it's one where her past existed so it's not quite our Earth. The comic is pretty fun actually.

I think I like your concept better. ;-)

Red Sonja illustrates the conundrum between having inhuman skills and superhuman abilities.

Being the best swordsman (woman) ever born will only get you so far when you are facing Conan-grade characters. Mass and reach and endurance and just raw strength are essential to win a fight, especially against multiple men.

So she has to have superhuman strength. Can she lift a car? Probably not. Can she swing a massive sword forever? Seemingly yes.

(If anyone has ever fooled around swinging a huge broadsword, you'll know that its freakin' impossible to do much with it, even for a man with normal strength.)

And anyone who engages in fighting with sharp blades and dealing with archers and spears and fire and whatever else is going to be a maze of scars. GOT got that right with many of their characters, plus GOT characters wear a lot of armor or extremely stiff, thick leather that can't easily be pierced.

As many have noticed, her armor isn't exactly all inclusive. <grin>

So she has to be pretty much invulnerable.

These things seem obvious.

And then there's the famous Raiders of the Lost Arc scene where Indiana casually shoots the fearsome guy attacking with a huge sword. End of fight.

If she's brought into the 20th century, her sword swinging won't get her far if bullets can hurt her.

WW has the same issue, except that it's generally considered part of her canon that she's pretty much unhurtable. Although the movie didn't flaunt that with a Kryptonian-grade scene with a machine gun blasting her chest.

(Which I'm glad to see that Supergirl TV has now done a decent job of portraying. Not as good as the scene in Superman Returns, which is the best bullet-deflecting scene ever filmed, but good. )
