Black Scorpion TV series

Black Scorpion TV series was created by Markiehoe
Since I am no longer watching a certain TV show I went searching for alternate entertainment.
And BOY did I hit the jackpot!
The Black Scorpion TV series is on Amazon Prime.

I have never seen the movies staring Joan Severance but I do remember the TV series.
It was really promoted by SCi Fi channel back in the day.
I still have the calendar (somewhere) that was packed with SCi Fi magazine.
But like most programs on that channel it was quickly abandoned.

Michelle Lintel plays Darcy/ Black Scorpion and she plays her completely straight while everyone else camps it up..
She is super cute and always wears tight dresses or work out clothes and her super sexy, high cut, low cut, high heeled Black Scorpion costume.
Cop by day, costumed crimefighter by night.

As a detective she is surrounded by bumbling cops and a new handsome partner.
As Black Scorpion she has the "Gadget Guy" that is now standard fare in all these shows.

In episode one "Armed and Dangerous" we are introduced to all the main characters.
The city is menaced by a Cyborg, there is a Militia led by a crazy General and the corrupt Mayor chases skirts while the city falls apart.
Good thing Black Scorpion is here!.

The production is aided by the library of stock footage from Roger Corman's film vault.
So there is plenty of explosions.

The episode had a lot of bumps as do most pilot episodes but I did enjoy it and I did "Laugh out Loud" at some of the jokes and situations presented.

Aerobocide could have really been an awesome episode in my dreams but yeah it was a fun and campy show. I had the boxed set and we talked about it here many a time. I first saw an announcement for the show during the 2000 Halloween parade in NY. They were airing the parade and had Adam West and Michelle Lintel on TV talking about it.

That was 17 years ago!? I miss bigger hair.

Personally, I always preferred the daytime cop character. I recall it being funny watching a hero without powers against all the villains normally with odd weapons and also no superpowers.

Episode 2 Wave Goodbye

We are introduced to our first super villianess Dr. Gail Waters / Hurricane

Looking past the comedic elements of this episode her origin is very tragic.
Dr. Waters and her friends are Marine Biologists looking into illegal toxic waste dumping when they are contaminated and given powers mimicking there inner desires.
Gail is given power over water and weather where the two guys get squid based power.
None of them are bad people to start with and are corrupted by their desire for revenge against those polluting the ocean.

A laugh out loud moment is when the police Captain storms out of his office and says:
"Detective Walker i want to see you in a bikini....."
She reacts.
"....and under cover at the beach to investigate this crime."
Superbreath fans will get a kick out of this episode.
Hurricane blows the dress right off a bank teller.

I can not tell you how much this show is a breath of fresh air.

Episode 3 Blinded by the Light

This episode starts off a little clunky.
Third episode and I see the same stock footage of wrecked police cars used again.
However soon we are introduced to the villain, a photographer who wants to make a name for himself by unmasking Black Scorpion and capturing her true identity on film.
In a struggle he is blinded and after experimental surgery becomes Flashpoint aided by his bubbly girlfriend Iris Lookingood/ Vision

The pair wonderfully play it over the top and alot of laughs are in this one.

The B story is fascinating.
It is the Superman, Lois and Clark love triangle reversed.
Darcy likes her partner Det. Steve who is fascinated by the Black Scorpion.
Darcy would like to start a relationship with Steve who after a little soul searching admits that chasing the Black Scorpion is what he really wants.

For some design reason Black Scorpion now wears clunky platform boots instead of her much sexier high heels featured in the first episode.
If I remember correctly the Spice Girls were popular at this time and Baby Spice would stomp around in those things.

Episode four: Home Sweet Homeless

In a bizarre opening sequence we are re-introduced to the super villainess Aftershock.
Much footage is used from what I thought was an abandoned episode.
However with a little research I found out that the movie Black Scorpion II: Aftershock (which I have never seen) featured the same villain played by the same actress.
A great score!

Another fine performance of a good looking actress in a sexy costume having fun with the roll.
Plus we get two really good fights between Black Scorpion and Aftershock.

I can only assume a lot of stock footage from the movie is re used in this episode as Aftershock uses her earthquake machine to punish the city for their treatment of the homeless.

Last episode we had a character named Vision and this episode Aftershock is after the rare metal Vibrainium.
I will leave that info here.

Heroineburgh is very influenced by this show. It took the campiness of the 60s and 70s superhero shows and filtered it through the darkness of the 80s and 90s. Pretty much perfect for what it what was trying to do, and one of the last attempts at bombastic superheroine sexiness before the Social Justice Warrior era came upon us and everything had to be about some kind of agenda. Good times! Glad it's available on Amazon and not lost to the ages.

Episode five: Love Burns

Darcy is attracted to a hero and then bad things happen.
Another tragic super villain origin where a good man, Firefighter Adam Burns is corrupted into doing evil when accidentally given superpowers.

This episode features plenty of action with lots of fire, explosions and fight scenes.
A highlight is the presence of Megadeth's Dave Mustaine featured as a kick ass, remorseless arsonist.

It seems like most of Black Scorpion's enemies have real superpowers while she, like Batman, is just a highly talented human with a suit and gadgets.

That's what it looks like.
She has to overcome great odds every episode to save the day.
Just like an old fashioned comic book hero.

Episode 6 Into Thin Air.

Dr. Phoenix wants to resurrect Master Criminals so he can reform them and return them to society!
What a crazy plan.
He brings back Black Scorpion's first arch enemy Breathtaker.
Breathtaker was featured in the first Black Scorpion movie with Joan Severance, which I have not seen.
However this time the producers really scored and legendary actor Adam West portrays the super villain.
His plan is to gas the entire city with Fear gas.
Good stuff!

For the most part i don't like hallucination style episodes but the cast dove in and had fun.
The best one was Darcy's fight with Black Scorpion, not over which personality was stronger or better but over Detective Steve's affections.
Two gals fighting over a man!

Will we ever see camera angles like this ever again in a modern show?

Episode seven: Turned to Stone

Another fun episode with a woman known as Medusa who seeks revenge against all the handsome men that have rejected her by spraying them with a special mud and turning them into stone statues.
Pretty straight forward message.

The confrontation between Medusa and Black Scorpion at the end has them playing off each other's vanity with both showing strength and weakness.
I enjoyed it.

Two politically incorrect scenes stand out for me.
Medusa and her henchmen invade a restaurant via the kitchen.
Surprisingly the staff put up one hell of a fight and defeat the two bruisers she brought with her.
Medusa delivers the last blow with a frying pan.
She than says the tag line: "I guess a woman's place is in the kitchen."

Later in the episode the Captain address the detectives by saying: "Alright men Listen up."
Darcy walks up behind him late and says that is sexist.
"Not when I am talking to the men."

I have only one main problem with this episode. "seeks revenge against all the handsome men that have rejected her" - given that she's played by Lisa Boyle I would assume this means she has no victims, because in her prime what men exactly are rejecting her?

Spoilers!

In the episode it is revealed when she was a girl she was horribly scarred when some boys sprayed acid on her face.
As an adult men rejected her solely on her appearance.
She discovers a mineral bath that temporarily restores her beautiful face.

And oh yes.
Lisa Boyle is a HOTTIE!

Episode eight Crime Time

Legendary Batman TV show the Riddler actor Frank Gorshin STEALS the show as Clockwise the time themed criminal.

Aided by his henchmen Big Hand, a tall fellow, Little Hand, a little person and the shapely Hourglass.
Hourglass played by 5'11 Playmate Victoria Silvstadtt, is underused in his episode.

However I did mention that Gorshin is in top form.
The episode is littered with time puns that range from the obvious to the really clever.
This one is a definite Must See episode.

We also have the return of Black Scorpion's high heels.
A much better look than those clunky platform boots seen in other episodes.

In a non related scene Darcy is seen running in her tight skirt and heels.
In the next scene in the alley she is wearing socks and sneakers.
Yes, I notice things like this,

Episode 9 No Sweat

Aerobicide!
A man hating fitness instructor starts an all out war on men.
Striking out on millionaires first and then all the men in Angel City

What an episode!!!!!
The actresses and stuntwomen really earned their pay on this episode.
Action packed with a lot of fights and exercise action.

Aerobicide introduces her henchwomen Bend and Stretch to Black Scorpion then orders them to eliminate her.

All these stills are fantastic!  I actually remember watching Black Scorpion when it was first broadcast and not thinking anything odd about the costumes.  They were hot obviously, but also what I expected any kind of campy superheroine to wear.  Standard issue, if you will.    But now things are so different, that I simply can't believe the characters wore them on a family show.  It doesn't seem so far away, but 2001 was a generation ago and you forget how much things change in that much time.

THANK YOU!
My point exactly.
Light, escapist entertainment.

Why isn't a bright, colorful show like Supergirl light, escapist entertainment?
Flash seems to pull it off.

I was speaking specifically of the costumes, but the point does work on TV in general.  Don't get me wrong, I'm a sucker for Darcy's costume, but I'm also a sucker for Diana Rigg's "Emmapeelers" from 1967 and Nichelle Nichol's uniform from 1966, but both of those wouldn't fly now (or 2001 for that matter).  I guess the best example is comparing The Orville with Star Trek: Discovery.  As has been written on this site, Orville is essentially a remake of Next Generation, complete with social topics from the 1990s that seem pretty safe and uncontroversial these days.  Discovery feels like now, for better or worse.  In other words, the definitions of what makes up light escapist entertainment are always changing and after 17 years, you realize they have changed quite a lot right under your nose.
