What If?

What If? was created by murdough
Disney's been making several Marvel related announcements(more details about Loki, Falcon & the Winter Soldier, and WandaVision(yes, that's the actual title), among others) regarding their upcoming Disney+ streaming service today and this is the latest. They're going to be doing an animated series titled What If? which follows the theme of the classic comic series. One of the first stories will be a "what if Peggy Carter received the super soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers" scenario, which was first explored in a recent comic. The full story's in the link.

The comic series that recently had Sharon Carter as Captain America was the recent Exiles run starting with issue 3.  She was in several issues.

The Valkyrie in the series, based on Tessa Thompson from Thor Ragnarock, was pretty fun too.

Here's a link with a page for sample art.

The issue of "What If" where Jane Foster finds the hammer of Thor instead of Don Blake became such a cult favorite that Marvel eventually wrote a similar story into the continuity decades later.

That issue, probably more than any single thing, was the catalyst that started me in this wacky genre

It certainly was ahead of its time.  I think it got lots of people thinking over the years.

Same here, two words that definitely apply to this genre.

Come  to think of it, we haven’t had a “what if” workshop in quite sometime

"What If"'s original Jane Foster-as-Thordis gets the Adam Hughes treatment:

For those interested, looks like Jane Foster is taking up the mantle of the new Valkyrie this summer:

That is good news!  She looks great.  I had no idea she was alive - her death was short even by Marvel standards!

I'll say this for the Thor series of books: its never been short of really powerful women in important positions.  That might just be due to the source material coming from Norse mythology.  Luckily Kirby, Buschema and co. gave them some great costumes.  A tradition which seems to have lived on.

Jane Foster didn't die (or didn't die in recent marvel history).

She had cancer.  When Thor became unworthy, she picked up Mjolnir and gained the powers of thor (and then everyone called her Thor).   Every time she turned into Thor, she'd get a burst of healing that would flush all toxins out of her system (re: chemo).  But Cancer is natural, so it did nothing to her cancer.  Being Thor was slowly letting the cancer kill her. (Not to mention she was skipping sessions to be Thor.) This is a fantastic plot device of being the hero is slowly killing the hero.  It's not like this trope hasn't been used before, but it was well done here and an interesting spin.

Jane Foster had to stop being Thor and actually finish her chemo.  At the start of War of the Realms she's finished her Chemo and is "cancer free".  She still can't be "Thor" because  Mjolnir is in the heart of the sun.  There's a comic where Jane Foster's Thor "dies", but it's just her turning back into human Jane due to no Mjolnir and Thor rushing her away before she really dies.  The comic immediately lets us know she's not dead.

It's a pretty kick ass fight, there are a bunch of them in her Thor run, along with an explanation of what Mjolnir really is. (OTH, it also makes me think Beta Ray Bill's Stormbreaker can't be but a lesser immitation.)

They do show Jane going to Chemo and putting in the work needed.  (Thor's Dog is HILARIOUS.)

At some point the future Thor stories indicate that Mjolnir comes back to Jane -- or at least it's been hinted at by comments from Thor's future daughters.  Yet more powerful women in the Thor comics.  The Thor god Of Thunder run is pretty great overall, the daughters are in it a lot, and in Jane's run a bit.

The War of the Realms mega event feels a bit different than a lot of other events.   The ground work for the event started back 2012, and was heavily in the Thor: God Of Thunder book, as well as Jane's entire run on Thor.  If you've been reading Thor, it seems like it's FINALLY here and  makes sense.  I suppose someone not reading Thor it's probably just some other event.

The end of War of the Realms #2 shows why Jane is going to be Valkyrie....

Got it - thanks TOT!  I was under the impression that she sacrificed her life to cancer in order to do one last mission as Thor.

when she went in her last mission it was very much a possibility.  She expected to die when she turned back into Jane.   Fear the warrior who knows they are already dead.
