Summer 2012 Short Story Workshop Is ON!

21 Jul 2012 02:30 #27932 by lfan
FINALLY! OK, after so much needed prodding, I'm announcing the Summer 2012 Short Story Wrokshop as now OPEN!

Theme: Any take on "A Superwoman sits in a Bar". I changed it from "A Superwoman walks into a bar" for the reason that who says she's super when she walks in.... :)

Word Length: 1000 words

Deadline: August 30th. This is about a month and a half away, but given the length limitations, this shouldn't be an issue. It will be strictly enforced.

Prize: None, except the title of winner! That is, unless someone else wants to donate a prize! :)

Going forward, we're gonna try to do the regular Workshops in Fall and Spring and Short Story WS in Summer and Winter. OK, get your word processors humming, people.

I'll also make an official blog post about this soon....

I can donate a prize, I think. A commissioned drawing from an artist to be named later.

I hope that inspiration will hit me somehow. I have a couple of ideas, but none that will fit the theme for now.

I'm looking forward to it. Now I just need to work out exactly which idea involving a bar to go with and how to fit it into 1000 words. Here's hoping for a fair few entries.

That sounds familiar. I've also got a few ideas that fit the theme but I don't know if it'll work with the word limit.

As for the prize: Wasn't the main prize always the right to choose the next topic?

I've tried to wrote a couple of stories, but the 1000 words limits is a major problem. Even the shortest one I wrote reached 2000 word in no time.

I have a short story on theme which is based on an honest-to-God Cross-my-heart-and-hope-to-die personal experience. (Well, she's as 'super' as I'll ever get anyway  ).

It runs to 1500 but if we're sticking to the limit I think it'll edit down w/o too much damage.

Yeah, the 1000 word limit really makes it challenging here. I just noticed that the first 1000 words of my last workshop entry not only fit the topic of this one, but also how little happened in this part.

Then again I should stop theorizing and actually start writing...

I think I have a story for the workshop now. I had to edit it down from 1600 words, but I think it works.

Is the original workshop schedule still in place?

Based on the obvious technical problems of the site.....I'm gonna post a blog about the Workshop and probably extend the deadline by a week or two

Oh yes the workshop, even though I didn't write a single word for it yet, I don't see any non-selfish reason why the deadline should be extended. After all the site problems shouldn't affect the writing process. The IRC Chat would've been another idea but that boomed compared to other times during the downtime.

I have a 1088 word draft which didn't take too long. Can I suggest keeping the end-date as it is and just give it a final little push in a week or so. I think those who are going to put in a story are already on the case.

cheers

As long as the site is back to full strength in the next couple of weeks, I don't see an issue with keeping the deadline as is.

Of course I'm in the priveliged position of having my story ready to go...

While my entry is going a little slow, I think I'll be able to post it in time with the original deadline.

Although I usually like having a little extra time to polish, I've had a story ready to go for over a week now. (996 words, not including heading & my usual sign-off bit)

+1 for keeping the original deadline. B)

Hello, I started a story for the workshop but I have a question: Do I have to use strictly the sentence "A Superwoman sits in a Bar"? or am I free to take the story wherever I want as long as at some point there is a woman (certainly super!) sitting somewhere in a bar?

You can use the idea as a jumping off point for a story that goes wherever you want.

Did you already submit it? I've been keeping your latest entry back because it seemed to me like you workshop entry, but I want to make sure it is.

Yes that's it. I think it's exactly 1000 words. I'm not sure its tag-worthy.
