2015 Winter Workshop is On!

25 Oct 2015 23:22 - 26 Oct 2015 21:32 #44720 by lfan
2015 Winter Workshop is On! was created by lfan
Theme: "Writing Prompt Workshop"

As per the home page blog......

In celebration of the premiere of Supergirl on CBS here in the States, SWM would like to declare the 2015 Winter Writer's Workshop Open! For those unfamiliar with our writing workshops, it is basically a workshop/contest where we challenge our fanbase to create a story matching a particular theme (e.g. "Sibling Rivalry"). Well, after almost 30 different workshops, we've decided to take different spin on the Workshop this time, in an effort to pull in more entries -- from existing and new authors! Rather than having the participants write and create a story around a central theme, we're simply going to provide the following three 'writing prompts' from which the user will be required to pick one as the first sentence of their entry:

1. The young woman stood silently with her fists clenched as she stared up at the massive door.
2. She instinctively groaned softly as she suddenly regained consciousness, feeling suddenly energized more than she had ever felt before.
3. The gunman smirked as he suddenly raised his weapon and fired it at the woman.

After that first sentence, it's completely up to the author! Two page superheroine anecdote? 10,000 word ubergirl saga? Simply a kick-ass action scene in a few paragraphs? Pulse racing supervillainess rampage scene? A power fantasy dream sequence? It's all whatever the author feels suits them best!

This go-round there is no word minimum or maximum, and the entry does not even have to be a complete story or involve a complete plot (though that would probably garner more votes, IMO). Also to note is that after starting with one of the prompts, the entry does not have to simply progress from there. Flashbacks, flash-forwards, and even flash-sideways are perfectly allowed if the author so desires.

We purposefully tried to make things as 'generic' as possible for the authors to take their own literary license and head down more than one possible path, so hopefully one (or more) of these ideas will get some creative ubergirl ideas percolating inside some of our authors heads.

Due to the 'experimentation nature' of this workshop, we've decided to not award prizes this go-round, other than bragging rights. Our goal , as with all the workshops, is to provide some fresh content for the Library as well as foster some dormant creativty in the minds of not only our existing writers but also any budding authors out there.

As for the "rules", here they are:

Each entry MUST start with one of the three provided prompts
Authors may submit up to three separate entries
All entries must include an 'ubergirl' type of character in their story
All characters must be over the age of 18
SWM reserves the right to withhold and/or disqualify submitted entries based on their sole discretion of the content.
Entries must be received no later than Dec 15th, 2015 at 11:59pm EST. SWM, however, reserves the right to grant reasonable deadline extensions.
Once submitted, entries will be voted on by the SWM user via an online poll

If you have any questions or need any clarifications, you can always contact me at larafan22@yahoo.com. Good luck to all!

I'd like to suggest a few tweaks for the prompts:

1. Remove the word "steel" from the first prompt. Then the door could be the door of a castle or a fortress or a walled city.

2. In the second prompt, change "the gunman" to "her adversary" or just "the man." That way, the weapon could be anything from a crossbow to a futuristic ray-gun.

2. You use the word "suddenly" twice in each of the last two prompts. Get rid of them. In fact, toss out the other adverbs ("silently,' "instinctively"). Let the writer decide how the woman stands or how she groans.

Just trying to give participants a bit more leeway. I've got a couple of ideas that would work better with the changes I've suggested.

I have to agree with Argo's suggestions.

Let's just say, I met Argo halfway. Here are the revised topics:

The adverbs will have to be worked around. Sorry..... :)

I almost jumped in on the double "Suddenly" myself. Not repeating words was one of the first things that Argo drilled into my brain many years ago when I was first starting out on this site. How about "as she quickly regained consciousness, .....)? That is of course, the one I am thinking about using. And to sweeten the deal, if you make the change, I will get off my lazy rear end and actually submit a story.

I'm in too. Time to write something totally over the top.

How adult can the story be, by traditional broadcast standards?

R-rated?

NC-17? (That's my limit these days).

Like most fiction here, I would classify it as NC-17......just asking for no blatant porn fests......

That's actually part of the workshop idea: having previous writers returning, so I think you should give it a shot ;)

I'm up for this :) using the second option to start;, there may need to be a little leeway given for the opening scene...no gel in sight from me tho.

I had a few days off from work -- which I promptly wasted by being ill.

Today, though I sat around and knocked out a short story for the first prompt. I'm contrarian, I doubt it'll be like any other entry. Not sure how others will take it, but it's the story that came out. (I'm trying to edit it down now.)

I might have an idea for the third one, it's also probably unlike other choices. We'll see if I can actually polish the first one in time to submit, and if I can make my idea for the other one work.

I don't want to promise anything, because I have had a real hard time keeping my promises this year. So I will neither confirm nor deny that I am investing some considerable time into coming up with something for this rather intriguing workshop.

I am 2000 thousand words into mine. I have an ending which I need to get on paper so to speak and then use the rest of the time for the middle.

I have approx 2500 words into a story but might need another 1500-2000 to tie all together. Will see if I can get it done. After all it's almost 10 days left.

I'm probably out of the contest at this point, I haven't written more than 500 words and I also started working in a toy retailer in my town, it was supposed to be a week-end only job, but it's likely to become full time till Christmas. Hence my free time is currently reduced to a trickle.

Santa makes an appearance at SWM! As most of you know, this workshop did not involve any prizes, just holiday bragging rights! Well, thanks to the generosity of one of our stalwart members, Sarge395, the winner of the 2015 Winter Workshop will receive one of his replica SUPERGIRL'S TV COSTUMES (sizes Small or Medium), donated by Sarge. Winner will coordinate with Sarge on shipping details (he also has graciously offered to pay for US Shiping).

While it doesn't include boots or cape, this looks to be a high quality product that would be great for that special Supergirl in your life! If that doesn't give one incentive to start writing, I don't know what will! Please help me in thanking Sarge for his generous holiday spirit!

I have a vignette from the gunman prompt that I will submit if I don't come up with anything more substantial.

Cursing is allowed, right?
