Variety: Supergirl may switch to CW on renewal

02 May 2016 22:56 - 05 May 2016 16:47 #47530 by five_red
Variety Pilot Buzz .

Meanwhile, rumors are again flying that “Supergirl” could shift over to the CW, should it get renewed. While sources tell Variety there have been discussions, a network insider shot down the speculation.

Almost certainly bullshit, but I'll start a thread here just in case people want to comment. The phrase "...there have been discussions..." is interesting, if true.

Wonder what that would mean in terms of special effects (such as super power use, either by Supergirl or her opponents). If they nerf that, there's one less reason I have to watch (my other reasons include decent storylines/character development, and the love of seeing Melissa Benoist in a cape and spandex_the decent storylines/character development reason has also gone to shaky ground with much of season 1).

If, somehow the show moved to CW, a lot of changes would to be made to both the show and the CW itself.

I could see them maybe bringing this to that new streaming Service they keep threatening, but yeah this doesn't sound true.

Then agian if it does Its chances of cancelation are probabbly zero. THE CW renews Reign a show that gets like a zero Ratings.

(oh also agian Reign: Good show. intresting look in to female Power thats not strength and flight)

If there's no threat of cancellation once a series moves to CW, then I really hope Supergirl stays on CBS. Seems like Supergirl needs the threat of cancellation to motivate them to improve on the special effects, costumes, and storylines. And those things really, really need to improve right now.

I thought Supergirl was doing well. Why would they change networks if so, or is it not actually doing well?

By CBS standards, it wasn't doing particularly well in the weeks prior to the crossover with Flash (from CW). It finished the season OK, or so I gather. But it wasn't a barnburner.

Someone with more industry knowledge should qualify my statements re: CBS expectations, but at the moment, Supergirl is one of a handful of shows that are still in limbo regarding Season 2 on CBS.

By any normal show's standards, it did well pulling in 6-7M viewsers per week (in the second half). This is better than most shows and even most of CBS's shows but the problem is that it is expensive to produce so the bar is raised higher by default. When you also take into account the trend (downward) of viewship, it doesn't bode well for the show.

However, the 3+ and 7+ numbers are good as well as the "buzz" of the show which provides an intangible benefit of added press for the network. In addition, it targets and hits a demographic that CBS isn't really privvy too for its drama series, so that may have some added benefits as well.

Finally, it should be taken into account that it was in a brutal time slot -- Monday at 8 -- which has no lead-in. Likewise, it was going up against WWF Raw (don't laugh), MNF (for part of the year), Gotham (splits the nerd vote), and reality show giants The Voice and DWTS. Combine that with the fact that it was pre-empted twice (maybe three times) for awards shows did not help rating continuity towards the end there.

It's a much bigger question than "just look at the numbers" which might be why they are waiting. Another possible reason is look at the free publicity the show is getting speculating over the show's future. :) CBS might think they can ride this buzz right into upfront season where all the advertisers will be. Look at the recent articles here, supergirl.dcentertainmentnews.com/ , and you can see what I mean. All these media outlets writing about Supergirl when it hasn't aired in 2 weeks! Crazy like a fox!

I personally think it'll be renewed by CBS, but that's just my speculation.....

Thank you Lfan. That sounds like a very well formed opinion. Despite my problems with the show, I hope it gets renewed. If not on CBS, then I wouldn't care if it moved to the CW.

The point others have mentioned is that CW doesn't spend the kind of money on shows that Supergirl has required during Season 1.

Would the show rate well without a lot of the special effects? For me, it wouldn't make much difference. With most movies, I think special effects get in the way of good storytelling, given the money, time and attention spent on them. Or there is no storytelling and just a lot of special effects (might as well be a video game).

Better writing would make me a LOT happier than special effects in almost every case.

Also, some simple special effects (bending steel bars, crushing things, day-to-day "Oops, didn't mean to wreck that") are more interesting than seeing two people with heat vision fighting each other (where the beams collide and/or force one of the combatants backward), a concept that is so ludicrous it pisses me off. Or the times when SG struggles with Class 2 strength and then suddenly exerts Class 1,000,000 strength (tossing Fort Roz back into space).

I like to think that superstrength comes from having some very special muscles, ligaments and bones (which have limits) and not some kind of cosmic psi-force forcefield "all you have to do is believe you can do it" stuff where there are no limits.

In other words, biology and not magic.

If they ever bring Mary Marvel onto the show as was rumored, then they will indeed need to contrast the biology vs. magic thing.

I probably wouldn't watch the show without the special effects shown on season 1. There are plenty of producers right now who do decent storytelling without special effects, if that's what you want. And the storytelling on the show needs to be improved badly.

I'd rather have it be renewed on CBS or simply cancelled.

I think this is a good sign that the show coming back. Melissa Benoist has been cast in the film Patriots day, which is about the recent bombing in Boston during the Boston Marathon. The film is being produced by none other than CBS Films. Yes, THAT CBS.

She's playing Katherine Russell, widow of the jihadist who got killed after the bombing!

It is filming on location in Boston, but Mark Wahlberg is the film's star. Tragedy/terror porn?

Deadline Hollywood has right now the best written article yet about the shows 2nd season and the possibility of the show moving production to Vancouver, BC.

If anyone wants to follow what the outlets are writing about the show, goto supergirl.dcentertainmentnews.com/index.cfm . You can see stories from around the web as they come in.

It's almost humorous to see all the "same" articles written in the last 24 hours about this, regurgitating the same thing.....ah, internet "journalism"
