Having said that, I love the Barbarella look for pure fun. But SG will always be about the hot pants and ballet slippers for me.

The 70's was a fun time for her, especially in Adventure. Here's an image from that era... sometimes she seriously kicked ass:

But that first one, where she throws the tank, is just....just.... I think it might be my favorite SG image ever. I'd never seen it before.

That image came from the cover of Adventure Comics 420, June 1972. As far as I'm concerned, that was her 'golden' age.

I liked the outrageously impractical way her cape connected to her choker. The way it flaunts her invulnerability.
If anyone else did that, the first thing a bad guy would do is to hoist her up by her cape and hang her.
Further, when flying fast, the cape would flutter and pull directly on her windpipe.
None of that bothers SG.
You could tie a locomotive to her cape and she'd just fly off with it.

But i love the other shoes she wore with it better, the ones with ribbons that tie up on her calves. Hmmmm.
The turner look grew on me. And compared to the new 52 look, i love it. The 52 uniform could be fixed with some slight changes, I love the cape. But those hole in the knee boots? And the offset red shield on the bottom is bad. Align it and make it part of the uniform and it's better.
I also think making it (and Superman's) clothes armored is just silly.

The boots, skirt, top and cape are in perfect balance.

I'm not posiive but I think a lot of those costumes were fan-submitted designs. I seem to remember one of the old Adventure Comic runs with SG having a "send in your designs" contest and even later gave credits to some of the entries.....
As for my preferences, they did a pretty good job with my best and worst, aside from leaving out hot pants -- probably one of my top 3. Strangely, I hated the white top when it came out, but grew to fall in love with it, so much it's also in my top 3. I guess my other would be the Helen Slater classic look.
Dunno which my worst three would be by the New52 is definitely one of them!

They held regular contests in the 70's where readers would design a costume for her and the winner's costume would get used it in at least one issue. The 'Barbarella" costume referenced in the original article was such a contest winner, for example. Anyone could sketch out a costume, send it in and then have a chance of seeing it portrayed by the professional artists. Kind of cool to do that for a regular title at DC.
Supposedly it was teenage girls sending in their fashion ideas, but given the nature of that Barbarella-like costume, I suspect it wasn't all teenage girls who were sending in ideas.

Agent00Soul wrote: Did Kara ever explain why she had new costumes each issue or did DC just act as though whatever she was wearing had always been her uniform?
She went through a period where she no longer had an indestructible costume (don't remember why), so she always needed new ones. Her powers in general were glitchy for a while.
Here are two pages from Adventure 409, August, 1971. Note they give credit for the costume in page 1.
