I thought Emily Berrington played an interesting role as Niska in season 1. She was created to be a prostitute, but she hates and kills humans for exploiting her. She's this perfect blonde doll who isn't what she appears to be. Scary
Interestingly, her role changes going into Season 2 as she grows to understand humans and finds that she's not all that different than us. I won't say more, but the subplots that revolve around her are fun.
I fondly remember her reaction to the 'fight club', a place where frustrated humans who can no longer find jobs or fulfillment in life thanks to synths taking over most of the jobs, go to destroy compliant, un-woken synths in fights. Niska, being truly awakened and sentient, is enraged by it, and has very different ideas about how such fights should be conducted. That episode is very much genre material for this audience.
