DC Universe new business

DC Universe new business was created by Woodclaw
It appears that Champions Online free to play policy is expanding. The DC Universe Online free site just announced that they're going free too.
Personally I will be very interested to see things from the inde for free, the basic game was way too expensive for my own tastes.

City of Heroes is doing the same as well.

This freemium trend is gaming is a very good thing. I usually burn out before the grind draws me in and the payments start. Great news!

I'll give it a try, once it's free.

I gave it a try and first impression is laggy :P

The best thing so far are the single player instances. Special note to the tutorial level, where your character breaks out of a spaceship made by Braniac. The rest is rather standard for MMORPGs so I doubt I will be playing it to the end.

The character creation gives a lot of possibilities, but I'm not far enough to have seen every effect these choises make. Obviously there are combinations that are better than others. But there are many opportunities for the character's looks ;)

Anyway, I'll see how this develops, right now lags are making it impossible to play. Many newcomers because it's free...

Same here, but I was also underwhelmed by the character editor, it's very basic and a lot less efficient than the one in Champions Online.

Yeah, it would have been better to be able to change colors during the creation of the new character. It also would be better to have all the standard clothes available if you chose to change it while ingame.

I have played around with the three big MMO superhero games: City of Heroes, Champions Online, and DC Universe Online. If you could take each of these and squeeze them into a single game, you would have an awesome superhero-based MMO. I think Champions is the best is sheer character creation options available. I would say City of Heroes is a close second in character creation options, but the power combinations get a bit routine. Both have pretty good content, but City of Heroes graphics do look a bit dated with it being the oldest superhero MMO.

DC Universe Online is certainly the prettiest with the highest production values considering it includes some major comic-related voice actors (Mark Hamill as Joker, Summer Glau as Supergirl, Kevin Conroy as Batman). However, I was disappointed about what felt like limited character creation abilities. For example, I tried to create a Supergirl like character. The easy part was picking Flight and Brawling, but the game wants me to have my character have fire or ice powers. Huh?

Seems like Ice would be the correct choice here as both Superman and Powergirl use this. Supergirl uses the Iconic powerset exclusive for NPCs. Speaking of Iconic powers, Heat Vision and Freeze Breath are part of this very powerset too, meaning they can be chosen after Level 9.

Not sure if I understand you correctly here, but both those things are in fact possible in DCUO.

As for the game itself, I've played it back at launch, and now giving it another roll for fun.
It's a fairly nice game (it IS a game first and foremost though, not an animation dedicated to satisfying a public like us :P ). Not the kind of mmo you play for years without breaks, once you get to max lvl and did all the instances it's pretty much been there done that unless you get hooked on the PvP.

Sidenote for those that go Villain: Take the Joker as your mentor, by far the most awesome dialog from him.

I found out about the color options at character creation when I made my third character. My first character had to be deleted for that as mental isn't the best choice for someone like me.

I know that there are costumes later to be found that look identical to the starter costumes available, but I haven't found every starter costume ingame yet. I haven't found a single costume part that looks like the civilian starter costumes. Seems like the character is supposed to have been abducted in her everyday clothes, as a shiny superhero costume would have increased security and not enabled her to break out.

The superman class combination (Flight, Brawl, Ice, Meta) is really nice. The first ability I got was a multi-target-get-over-here-stun for massive damage. Good for solo-brawlers. The iconic super breath was rather underwhelming compared to this or heat vision.

The cinematic associated with the tutorial mission suggests that your character shifts from street clothes to a costume as a result of their exobyte-based powers reacting to Brainiac's attempt to digitize them... or something like that. Regardless, it seems to me that exobyte-based powers enable to character to shift his clothes to any pattern they've scanned in(my idea for how to explain your ability to radically change your costunme on a moment's notice)

(Hi! It's my first posting this forum!)

I've played DCU online recently(becuase I found that it is free by this post!), and it was quite nice to me.

Initial character creation looks quite limited and too fantasy-theme, but it also provides superhero-like abilities(like heat vision, freezing breathe etc) in game.

It would be better if more superhero-like actions were available. I wanted lifting enemies overhead and throwing away like trash but it is impossible in DCU online :(

Anyway I like how my character looks :)
