Here's a footnote to Dr. Muttonchops' excellent new story.
In February 1940, Look magazine published a two-page story by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, the creators of Superman, entitled "How Superman Would End the War." You can read the story, along with an interesting account of a Nazi newspaper's response, here:

Dr. M confirms that his story was partly inspired by that two-pager.

Oh man, I remember seeing that two-pager in a chronological collection of Superman's golden age stories. I always thought it was pretty silly.

Thanks very much, Argo! That article was very informative! Also, thanks for the kind words about my story!
What can I say? As the History Channel documentary about comic book characters pointed out, superheroes then believed in instant solutions.

For a theraphy against this kind of thinking I advised to read Mark Gruenwald's Squadron Supreme limited serie.
