"The Atomic Threat"
Thank you for another exciting installment in the adventures of Superwoman. I love the period flavor of these stories, and the way you use elements of "Golden Age" Superman lore such as the portrayal of Luthor (and how Superwoman, like her GA counterpart, doesn't always bother to pull her punches). If I owned an animation studio, I would be turning these into Fleischer-style cartoons!
My only nit-pick is that Superwoman doesn't go into action until 2/3 of the way through the story. And I was kind of hoping that Superwoman would straddle the bomb as it fell, like Slim Pickens in Dr. Strangelove, as she tears it open to de-activate it. But your ending was good, too.
Oh, and I appreciated the reference to Cary Grant -- since I've mentioned that I visualize Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell as Louis and Clara!
I'm looking forward to the next thrilling episode!

I understand that. This is just the way I saw it in my head. Although I can't do anything about more Superwoman scenes, I have slightly re-written the climax and added the details you've requested, I'm awaiting a response from LF.
Yeah, I'm glad that you caught that. Thought I'd give you a little shout-out!
It remains to be seen whether there even will be another one. Due to the lackluster responses of my previous stories, I'm considering retiring.
Thanks again for the kind words, my friend!

As I don't think this would help you much, where as some of the writer can give you far more detailed feedback.

I hear ya. I've nearly quit a number of times, and have actually quit at least twice. I hate how much of my self-esteem is dependent on what other people thing of me, and I freak out every time I put myself out there by making something that I've written public.
When it comes down to it, I still come back and write another story, even if it doesn't come close to hitting the spot for most of the folks on this forum, because I can't help it. I love superwomen and I love writing about them, and this is one of the few places where I can submit something and know that at least one person won't think: "What the hell is this nonsense?".
This site covers a wide spectrum of tastes, including the area covered by your work. The problem is that, with so few of us spread across such a wide superwomen spectrum, it can sometimes seem that you are not connecting with anybody else. But, remember that for every person who posts something positive about what you write, there are ten or more who think the same, but who are lurking.

Doc, I'm usually part of the "lurking majority" when it comes to your works, simply because I lack the proper frame of reference (I never watched the Fleischer's Superman).
Still I really hope you won't quit, as much as we are flattery-operated creatures (as LFan said) I think that shutting everything down isn't a good idea. As Diet said the vast majority of this community are lurkers, just consider the numbers. During the last workshop we had about 10 entries and 70 voters. Given that several regular posters didn't wrote any entry this leave us a potential pool of at least 40-50 lurkers. Meaning that about the 2/3 of this community are lurkers.
Granted, writing just for the sake of writing isn't as good as having a solid positive feedback, but that's part of the job's description.

I was really nervous at the start. I had some good ideas but I had trouble putting them across on paper. Some guy on the site named Argonaut seemed like a nice fellow and CLEARLY knew what he was doing so I asked him for help which he graciously offered. He edited much of my early work and gave me several good suggestions. In the process of doing all that, we discovered that we had several mutal interests including math and baseball (with an absolute loathing for the Bronx Bombers).
We partnered up several years ago and the rest as they say, is history.
Writing for me is an escape from my regular 7-7 job. I enjoy doing it, and I know that if I continue to do it and post it, others like yourself will continue to do so as well which benefits everyone.
There is an old joke about a six foot six lumberjack who goes into a brothel in Alaska.
One of the ladies pulls his shorts down in front of the other gals revealing his 3 inch penis.
All the ladies start laughing and ask, "Who do you expect to please with that?"
He answers back, "Myself".
There is another saying that only the people you love can hurt you. As long as the other authors on the site don't throw rocks at me for what I have posted (which has only happened once), I am very content.
And I will leave you with one last thought. Please excuse my Latin, but I think the phrase is "Illegitimus non carborendum" which loosely translates to, "Don't let the bastards get too you."

Sorry -- four years of high-school Latin speaking.
Getting back to the subject of this thread --
I announced my retirement from writing a while ago, but like DS71, I came back. My reasons (for coming back) were pretty much the same as his: I enjoy dreaming up superwomen-related scenarios, and can't resist writing them down. Plus, I felt that I was getting better with every story I wrote (I cring when I re-read my first couple of submissions to the StoryBank). And of course, I would never have considered dissolving my partnership with Ace -- so that kept me from hanging up my keyboard.
DS71 brings up another good point: Ubergirl fiction is itself a "niche" genre, but many of us occupy "sub-niches" -- "good" supergirl, "bad" supergirl, Amazonian, petite, lesbian, straight ... So although I tip my hat to the many talented writers who've contributed to the StoryBank, I naturally prefer stories that push my particular buttons, and I think that's true for all of us. So I think any writer has to accept that his stories won't be to everyone's taste, and get as much mileage as he can from his "fellow spirits."
I guess what I'm saying, Dr. Muttonchops, is: Take some time off if you need to recharge your batteries. But if you enjoy this peculiar genre as much as I think you do, sooner or later you'll be back. At least I hope so. You've got my email address if you want a beta reader!

drmuttonchops3 wrote: Argo, I understand what your trying to say. However, I simply don't think I'll be back. All the other writers here are immensely more talented than me, and I don't see the point in wasting my energy and nights writing something that isn't going to get the feedback I was used to. Who knows? Maybe I'm better off writing for Deviantart and Fanfiction.net.
Ok, this is absolutly b******t. Doc, if you think that you lack talent you're completly mistaken. I admit I think the same thing about myself and probably any other person who ever wrote anything on this site had (or has) the same idea. Truth is that putting imagination on paper is one of the hardest things to do. I'm never satisfied with my works and I don't think I'll ever be, every time I re-read them I find something to tweak or rewrite.
Feedback is a great thing, but it's only part of the equation.
I agree with Argo that pperhaps taking some off-time will be better, shutting the door for good might look appropriate at the moment, but in the end you might regret it (granted there's no rule about not allowing people to return).

There's also another bit of fantastic commmissioned artwork related to the story on the way as well!
Also, I've had some sense talked into me and I will not be leaving the site after all. In fact, I'm already thinking of another story as we speak!

I've got to agree with Anon about thinking that others are more talented than me and never being totally happy with what I've written when I look back at it. In fact I was a bit worried that I'd written a complete turkey when the first vote for my workshop story was only one star. I enjoyed writing it, though.
With regards to this particular story, I love the change to the Doctor Strangelove image. I think it fits perfectly. And I also loved Luthor rocketing away after his scheme was foiled. Thanks for the effort you put in and I'm looking forward to whatever you write next.

Welcome back to the fight Doc!
Ooh, I had a question about that. With the new site, how do you insert pictures into a story. Is this something you have to arrange ahead of time with fats and lfan, or is it something that you can do at story submission time?

It's something you can do at the time of submission.
I'll put up a guide to doing that later on today.

Ok, I've finished reading the story (and looked at the incredible art on DA) I have to say that the new final is both better and worse respect to the original. DOn't get me worng I love the little Doctor Strangelove scene, I just think that it doesn't completly suit the Fleisher cartoon style.
As for the rest the story works like a clock, for the reader this highly episodic style is very easy to handle, there's very little previous knowledge involved and they packed a good deal of action, which makes them perfect as an occasional reading.
This last one is a bit more involved than usual and - as I already mentioned - is a little off respect to the standards, but probably I like better than most for these same reasons.
