World Cup Predictions?

It was a nice ride while it lasted, and a lot more fun to be from the US than Italy or France!

I must say, it just did not seem like our guys took the first 20 minutes of any of the matches seriously, almost like they had to be down one to get with it. It is nice that we now have so many "Pros" playing on our team.

Here's hoping that England and Mexico can hang on a little longer, but both have a very rough road ahead, and I fear that they will be packing their bags and heading home in a few hours as well.

I can't say enough about Univision's Spanish coverage of the World Cup. I only catch about 1/3 to 1/2 of what they are saying, but they have such good insights into the games, and they are very fair in their coverage. They are very kind in replaying the games in prime time on one of their
secondary channels here in Phoenix.

They have Fernando Fiore in the studio (the host of Republica Divertida)
and he is just terrific! In discussing the devistating loss today for the US, he put it in perspective and closed with "at least the 80 million people who live in Africa still have something to cheer about. And what a great day of Spanish Futbol tomorrow with Mexico and Argentina!"

He said good bye, and then picked up one of those stupid horns and tooted as they faded out.

Univison treats the world cup as a big fiesta, and their on air guys seem to be loving every minute of it! It is very refreshing to watch.

England vs Germany. What a blow job! A perfectly good goal in the last minutes of the first period one minute after England got their first which would have tied the match 2-2 was not allowed! Can you think of a bigger moral buster or momentum swinger?

Of course, this then led to England pressing and gambling moving their guys forward in the second half trying to score a tying goal which left them open to two quick scoring counters.

Normally, it is difficult to kick the ball from the backfield more than ten meters or so past midfield, but with the new ball and the field elevation, they are sailing 20-30 meters past midfield which sets up these wild scoring runs.

I know that in most professional sports players will do what they can to help the officals make a mistake in their favor, but I really hope these dirty cheating Germans get the snot kicked out of them in their next match!

No matter how you look at it, this was a tainted victory for the German side!

Another very bad day for the referee. With England getting the screw job this time.

Why don't we have instant replay again?

With all due respect to the soccer purists here, this World Cup has shown me anything BUT a beautiful game. I get on the World Cup bandwagon every 4 years and admire and really dig the artistry and unbelievable skills these players have, that part is truly beautiful.

But the argument of being a "beautiful game" breaks down when these skillful players try to supplement their soccer skills with acting skills, taking fall after fall, its disgraceful and kind of pussy-ish if you ask me. I'm sure people will say its part of the game, but that 'part of the game' is stupid! Yes, yes, yes....I realize it happens in basketball too (where Kobe has never missed a shot where he didn't get fouled :P), but the fact that a soccer game hinges on so few 'moments' of opportunity. You don't wanna slow down the game? Stop faking so many fouls (or writhing on the ground in agony for 4 mins only to pop right back up and sprint like nothing happened)

The other un-beautiful thing of this Cup has been the calls made (or not made) from Day 1 -- no team apparently immune after England's royal shaft today. Again, there are so few opportunitites, these mistakes by refs are determining the fate of games and the entire tournament. FIFA, you cannot 'taint' your game with instant replay any more than your refs have the past two weeks.....

ElF

But I think those who are not frequent Soccer watchers will just have to accept the free-flowing nature of the game means it will never be as precise as NFL, Baseball, Cricket, etc. It's probably because of the sport's unpredictability that we call it the beautiful game, after all. ;)

I can't think of a better thing to light a fire under the team. However, it was again a shame and disgraceful officiating. More reason to perhaps use my replay idea on those critical mistakes.

I don't think Germany cheated. Neuer didn't even see the ball hit behind the line - he was in the air falling like a rock. Then with no whistle - what were the teams to do but play on?

It was a shame, and if it had ended 2-1 or 2-2 or even 3-1 I might feel differently stronger about it.

Amazing how, just as the commentators said, it's a rivalry for England - and not the Germans.

The English defense strategy/enthusiasm was as poor as the US team.

Two things we can agree on: It was a goal, and Wayne Rooney was frustratingly worthless the entire game.

At least afterward, the German goalie admitted that he cheated.

Careful LFan. I made a comment during the last World Cup (I think it was on this very board even) about how I could see why Americans consider Soccer a sissy sport due to all the flopping and I got totally ripped by the European contingent. I remember because my comment was made right after Italy beat Australia on a bogus penalty kick awarded after a major flop job.

Notice what I said though. I didn't say I consider it a sissy sport but could see why Americans in general do. I think those guys at the World Cup are the best athletes in the world. And. whether we Americans like it or not, acting seems to be part of the game. If we want to compete, we apparently have to call in acting coaches to get better calls.

I was encouraged in Germany's first game at this World Cup when two of them got yellow cards for diving. However, I haven't seen any more since then. One guy from Brazil took a major dive today and nothing was called.

With regard to the diving, as I'm sure you already know this is something most fans around the World detest. It certainly is not seen as being just part of the game, but is considered cheating. Indeed one of the world's most talented players, who plays his international games for the Ivory Coast, is widely disliked specifically because he is suspected of frequent 'simulation', as the game calls it. Because of this he's never got the recognition he deserves -- he could have been a hero, but most fans consider him a villain.

With the regard to video replays, stopping the game to check a replay to see if the game should have been stopped has an obvious flaw -- FIFA has been evaluating technology which can automatically (and instantly) tell when a ball has crossed the line, but has been sluggish to say the least at bringing it to fruition. Ultimately there are technological solutions within reach for some of the game's issues, but FIFA are far too conservative.

A lot of the skill and beauty of the game comes from the fact that it is free flowing, low scoring and unpredictable. Inherently, therefore, you can't stop to check every decision -- judgements have to be make instantly. Technology can assist (and should be used when it can, FIFA!!!), but ultimately it comes down to this: you can have a spontaneous game, or you can have 100% refereeing perfection, but you can't have both. :)

Never meant to insinuate it was a sissy sport, and I'll go on the record saying it isn't. All I'm saying is for players THAT skilled to be intentionally flopping on the World's largest soccer stage to gain an advantage rather than playing hard is pussy-ish!

In one of the earlier matches, Captain Flopper himself, Ronaldo got a yellow card for flopping in the box, and it really made my day! I just wish we could see a few more of those.

You know what I just realized. This tournament is like the NCAA tournament. I say that because the earlier rounds are the most exciting because you have upsets, surprises, etc...

Then, in the later rounds, it's the same old teams playing for the title. I hope someone could make a Butler-like run to the Final but I doubt it.

it is about 14 minutes to kickoff.

The big question:

Do the Dutch have enough patience to play a good positional game, and not chase the Spanish too hard?

Can the Spanish Total Football bite the nation that created it?

I say Spain 2-1

Well, Spain is the victor. Congrats to them.

The Final looked a bit choppy with all the yellow cards, but I'm glad the ref kept control. The only thing I can remember him missing was the Dutch player kicking that Spanish player in the chest with his cleats. In my opinion, that should have been a red right there.

Now to get ready for 2014 Brazil. It begins anew...
