There is fairly good evidence that Viking women sometimes fought alongside their men as Shieldmaidens.
In the 10th century or so, peasants were generally smaller and poorly fed. Much of the defending soldiers in Europe were peasant men, pressed into arms with a crummy sword or spear and little training.
In contrast, the Scandinavian women who sometimes accompanied their Viking men were tall, strong, well-fed and well-trained and equipped for combat. Women had a greater measure of equality in Scandinavian culture than in any place else in Europe at the time, and for many centuries after the Viking era.
A Viking Shieldmaiden striding ashore must have been a terrifying but astounding presence in the eyes of men who had never seen such a tall and powerful yet intensely beautiful woman. They were the superwomen of their time, and they fought like Vikings, with great skill and power.

Also, Viking raiders were generally more disciplined than most people credit them.
I do remember having read small portions of text that mentions shield maidens.

Here's an image I found labeled "Viking Warrior"...
A very nice rendition, which is made more realistic by her very strong hands. Easy to imagine that the body connected to those hands is sinewy and muscular.
Likely she stood at least a head taller than most of the peasant men she'd meet in combat and was very much a Viking.
A man might stare in amazement, seeing a superwoman before him, right up until his head got lopped off.

Reminds me of actress Kristana locken in the rol of Brunhild in the "Ring of Nibelungs" o " Curse of the Rings".
She is the really a WALKYRIE.
