Official 2006 College Football Thread
OK, my summary of thoughts (and directed as daggers to get people to start defending themselves and speaking up).....
1. SEC vs Pac-10.....Ok, is their ANYONE on the West Coast that still wants to argue that the Trojans play a hard schedule?? #9 Cal got WAXXED by UT (arguably, the 5-6th best SEC team) in a game that was 35-0 at one point.
2. Ohio St .... OK, nice win! Who do you play next week? Cumberland College? Oh that's right.....you have Texas! Um, better shore up that defense boys! Troy Smith to me though is the most fun player to watch in the nation.
3. Notre Dame....Oh geez! The NCAA brown-nosers were having a heart-attack last night I bet. Very ball-sy though for Weiss to go for it on 4 and 1 near the end. Thanks to him, I actually might not HATE Notre Dame as much as usual. Brady Quinn for Heisman? Umm, not anymore....
4. USC vs Ark ... Nothing like giving the best offense East and West of the Indianopolis Colts THREE turnovers in the first half. Razorbacks and Walmart, Arkansas's two pride and joys, look like they facing some tough times ahead
5. Michigan ... consistent, solid, workmanlike! As per usual! Same reason they'll drop 4 games they are suppose to win!
6. John Saunders....the guy picks Notre Dame vs Oklahoma for the National Championship??? Did they tell him what sport it was for?
7. DirectTV...perhaps the greatest invention (with TIVO) of our time. Rot in Hell, Comcast! I'm never going back!!
LF out!

Did anyone other than the poll voters not know that Cal was ranked too high and that Tennessee was very likely ranked too low? I didn't look up the actual line, but I'd be shocked if the Vols at Neyland weren't favored in this game from the outset. But Cal won't be that bad all year.
2. Ohio St....
It was a great game last year and it will be a great game next week. But I have OSU returning the road win. Northern Illinois is not North Texas, let alone Cumberland College.
3. Notre Dame....
You're underestimating GA Tech. Plus, ND dominated the second half; they could have had a third TD if they'd needed it. Quinn will be a Heisman finalist; no one will remember how bad he looked in this game.
4. Razorbacks and Walmart, Arkansas's two pride and joys, look like they facing some tough times ahead
Since when were the Hogs supposed to be any good? They had the Matt Jones show for a few years, but not much else.
5. Michigan ... consistent, solid, workmanlike! As per usual! Same reason they'll drop 4 games they are suppose to win! Razz
Consistent, solid, and workmanlike would be improvements. Nonetheless, the Big Ten isn't very scary this year; I predict only one conference loss in addition to debacles at ND and vs OSU.

As for the Sunday/Monday action.....
1) Shame about Michael Bush (Louisville) breaking his leg...Louisville really had a good shot at going undefeated with only two games as even challenging (Miami and WV). Backup looks pretty good though.
2) Is it morning already? Sorry, I think I dozed off watching that UM/FSU game in the middle sometime. Living in South Florida (but hating both), I must say the glamour is getting lost on this game, playing it so early now. I understand the rationale, but you think maybe they could get some practices in first? Dropped balls, missed assignments, stupid penalties.... of course, it'll be spun as a terrific defensive battle, but I think it was the battle of two anemic offenses -- which is unbelievable considering the talent both teams have. As a UF fan, I hope Jeff Bowden (and Phil Fulmer for that matter) NEVER leaves!
3) DirectTV Update: OK, not so enamoured anymore as it started raining hard with 1:00 left in the UM/FSU game and I lost my signal....

Free free to trash talk after Sunday if you win (you'll deserve it then), but a win over North Texas State (weren't they the team with Kathy Ireland as the kicker?? ) isn't a great feat to date.
True, you ARE defending National Champs, but now its 2006 A.V. (after Vince)....having your All-American cornerback stay outta trouble the week he's gonna be playing Troy Smith and Ted Gynn might help too!
Good luck, I'll be glued to the tube watching it for sure!

In the mean time, I'm looking forward to FSU getting a new offensive coordinator next year and breaking back into the top 25. At least we made a bowl game this year, but I think it's safe to say UCLA will slaughter FSU, especially playing in California.

Have fun in Cali! I'm Glendale bound, baby!!!

P.S. For what's it worth, I think you just added 3 wins to next year's total with the younger Bowden leaving!! Selfishly, I wanted him to say! Not since Ray Goff was coach at Georgia (who is still saying to himself "Terrell Davis played for us??") have I seen anyone like Bowden "waste" so much talent and offensive firepower in College Football.
As an alumnus of Florida State, I really hate Florida, but fair is fair. Michigan already had their shot at Ohio State. Time to give someone else a chance, even if it is the Gators.

That said, just three words for everyone out there: "National Champions, baby!"

You hate the Gators? Gee, that's not right! I'm a diehard Gator fan and I LOVE the Criminoles! I wish we played you several times a year! LOL!!

OK, finally got back and given the 'nuts' the proper period of mourning and respect, as well as had my body recover from a constant diet of Red Bull, Captain Morgan, Kamazakees, and fast food....

That's funny. I wasn't aware that Division 1 college football had a "national championship". Who did you beat in the playoffs to win it?

Sountern Miss, Kentucky, Bama, Tennessee, LSU, Arkansas, Georgia, South Carolina, FSU, and Ohio St.
As for the National Championship game, its called the "BCS game" and it was played in Glendale, AZ. And as for your argument on not having a true playoff system, I actually agree! The "championship" part of BCS has as much vaildity as the word "Big" in Big 12!
Nevertheless, it is the system in place and we won on their rules. Now we can concentrate on basketball where they have a true "playoff". Oh, did I mention we're the reigning defending champs in that as well?
Go Gators!

Well, we wanted to actually play Missouri, but after 6-0 and come the middle of October, their football team was no where to be found , so we had to settle on beating the following teams in our "playoffs":
Sountern Miss, Kentucky, Bama, Tennessee, LSU, Arkansas, Georgia, South Carolina, FSU, and Ohio St.

That wasn't meant to be a dig at the Gators. It was a dig at the ridiculous BCS system that gives us a "champion". I can't believe that every other NCAA sport from baseball to gymnastics to golf has a champion decided on the field but Division 1 football doesn't.
One reason it is so ridiculous is because nobody knows who the actual champ is on a yearly basis. Could Florida have won it if we had a playoff? Boise State didn't lose a single game the wole year, so why aren't they champions? How did the Big Ten get two teams in the BCS bowls when they clearly were overrated throughout the year? A playoff would answer all these questions, but until they have one, no team should be going around calling themselves "champion" when they didn't prove it on the field.
Sorry to rain on your parade LFan. You're basketball team won a legitimate championship, but your football team hasn't.
By the way, from some of the quotes attributed to your coach Urban Meyer, I think he agrees with me.

I told somebody last year that until we get a playoff system, no team from SEC will ever win the title again, cause its too tough a road. I'm all for a playoff system with the 8 "Major Bowl" teams ( or something like that). And while I don't think Boise State shoulda won it, I think they deserve a shot at finding out how good they are.
Peace

Everyone seems to forget that the system we had less than ten years ago would have had the two loss USC team playing Ohio State in the Rose Bowl, while the Gators played some non-contender in the Sugar Bowl, and Boise State would have been in the toilet bowl. It aint perfect, but the BCS is a step in the right direction. Now if only they'd take the next step.

While I completely agree that the BCS should be replaced by a playoff system, I would like to point out one thing in defense of the BCS. It's better than what we had before.

The only guys holding a playoff up is the Commissioners of the Big Ten and the Pac 10. They have threatened to withdraw the Rose Bowl from any "playoff" alignment. I say the rest of the country (i.e. SEC, Big 12, Big East, etc...) should call them on this bluff and start their own playoff and see how long the Rose Bowl lasts. I think the Rose Bowl winner would be disregarded very quickly if you had a playoff winner who had to win three or four games to be crowned champion. And I don't think that Big Ten or Pac 10 fans would stand for that very long.
