I was going to share my thoughts on the 32 teams, but instead here's Keeley in glorious red-and-white:

I'm an American, and I attended a university that has one of the best teams in the country in American football (no relation to what the rest of the world calls football). So that's the one and only sport I care about - and only college, not pro.

I think I will make an atempt to follow Real Madrid this season and see how they do without Zindane.

I can tell you how they did LAST season WITH Zizou. They got eliminated in the first post-group round. (You can see an animated gif of the wondergoal that knocked los "galaticos" out of Europe last year in the thread entitled "sheer, untouchable brilliance".) If you want a soap-opera of fading stars, ego-trippers, fat strikers and hateful right-wing fans by all means follow Real Madrid. General Franco would be proud of you. On the other hand, if you want to be ENTERTAINED by quality attacking football, follow either of last year's finalists.

By the way, the Italian teams found guilty of corruption are (obviously) not in the tournament this year. Juventus, the main culprits were relegated to Serie B in Italy, so they need at least one year to win promotion before they can even try to qualify for the following year's tournament. So it'll be at least 2 years before we see them in the Champions League again.

* Alternative answer: Keeley did a massive photoshoot for Zoo magazine in which she wears (or almost wears or hardly wears at all) the home strips of all 20 teams in the Premier League. Remember: Each team in each group plays the 3 other teams home and away so there are 6 games in each "mini-league" with 3 points awarded for a win and 1 point for a draw. If two teams finish level on points then the AGGREGATE score of the two games between them is the deciding factor. If the Aggregate score was level, the team who scored most goals in the AWAY game gets the advantage. If both games between the two teams had the identical score, the two teams' OVERALL goal-difference is taken into consideration.

The first 2 in each group qualify for the knock-out phase of the tournament. The third placed teams go into the 3rd round of the (less prestigious) UEFA cup and the bottom team in each group is eliminated from European competition.

The first round of matches is on Tuesday and Wednesday (12/13th Sept), the second a fortnight later.

So, what have we learnt?

Group A: No surprises at all.

Group B: Inter were expected to win in Lisbon. Patrick Vieira's 2,000th red card of his career (OK, slight exaggeration) couldn't have helped their cause and they SHOULD bounce back at home in their next match. As impressed as I was with Bayern, Spartak were a big disappointment and I expect them to be a different team next time out. This group could get very interesting...

Group C: "The Group of Sleep". Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Group D: Impressive wins for the big boys, but neither result is a major surprise. Like Group A, this one could be all over after 3 rounds of matches.

Group E: The rise of the "dark horses"... OK, so Lyon beat Real in the group stages last year too. Real have an awful lot of work to do. Lyon look better than 12 months ago. Could this be the year they really make an impression? Steaua are a famous old club now on the rise again thanks to yet another wealthy owner and winning in Kiev was impressive. If they can take points of Real, Group E could become fascinating...

Group F: Celtic gave Man U much more of a game than most people expected, but in the end a win is a win (3 points) and a loss is a loss (0 points). Celtic will still fancy their chances against the 2 other teams and a lot will depend on how they and Benfica fare in their home games.

Group G: No shock in Hamburg, even if Arsenal's win was far from comfortable in the end. Rosicky showed his wonder long-range strike against the US in the World Cup was no fluke with another stunning rocket from 30 yards. Porto's failure to score at home against a team who are supposed to be poor travellers could be very costly. The next set of matches sees Porto going to London already under pressure.

Group H: Lille needed a late equaliser, but they got it. That's bad news for Andelecht already. Milan won comfortably as expected. A better test will be to see who takes points of AEK in Athens.

Of course, after only one game, everything is open in every group. The next round of matches is in 2 weeks' time. After that, we should have a better idea of who's wheat and who's chaff.

I saw the first half of the Man United/Celtic match. It was very entertaining with four goals. Sad to say that I couldn't watch the second half due to having to work, but I see that the Mancs (<-Isn't that what you call them?) pulled it out in the end.

Didn't see the game I really wanted to see, which was the Arsenal game. I'll have to make a more concerted effort to find it in two weeks time. It's kind of tough here in the states to, first of all find it, and then try to schedule my workload to be able to watch it, as they are on in the middle of the day. But I'll try...

They are indeed often referred to as "Mancs", a slightly pejorative shortening of the formal adjective "Mancunian" meaning "of, or appertaining to, the city of Manchester."

A Celtic mistake as early as the second minute of the second half settled it, jd. It went a bit quieter after that.

TBH, you definitely got the best 45 minutes of entertainment from the 2 games by seeing the first half of Utd/Celtic. Hamburg-Arsenal was a long way from being a classic, with Rosicky's contribution the only really quality moment.

No surprise in Bulgaria, but Barca suprised everyone by needing a late goal to prevent their first Champions League defeat in nearly two years. Are the mighty Catalans slipping? Or was this their one bad game of the year, which they survived by salvaging a draw? Still, Group A looks like being the relative Cakewalk for Chelsea and Barcelona that everyone predicted. The next set of games sees the 2 big boys play each other...

Inter bought big over the summer with some very well known names coming into their squad. Are the new stars not gelling? 3 red cards in their opening two games haven't helped, but unless they get their acts together soon, it will be too late for them. Sporting look the strongest Portuguese representatives in the tournament and will be hoping to capitalise on Inter's woes...

Liverpool weren't convincing in the end, but a win's a win. Bordeaux should be winning their home games against the likes of PSV if they're going to progress. They lost and they haven't scored in either of their opening 2 games.... PSV must be confident of getting through to the next round now.

Dinamo Kiev used to be one of the powerhouses of world football. Their current squad just looks completely out of its depth. Seven goals conceded in their opening two games = very, very bad indeed. Lyon's away win was impressive and many people see them as at least semi-finalists this year. Real badly need to beat Steaua in the next round. If they lose, then it's panic time (yet again) in the Spanish capital.

Porto were really poor in London and need to improve dramatically (especially in attack) if they are to progress. Hamburg look to be struggling. They must get something at home to Porto in their next game to survive. Arsenal play Spartak in Moscow next. A win for the Londoners there would just about seal their qualification with 3 games to spare.
