Lunch with a Super..something

Lunch with a Super..something was created by castor
Russian Food.

There wasn't a lot of it in Cape Hope. There was a speciality store, and if you went into some ethnic groceries there was stuff there-but...well not much. Now russian food wasn't other then some Carp and Carviar stuff for the most part you couldn't get...but well there should be more of the little stuff like pickled herrings. Detective Gonza new there was a russian Community in town-both historical and recent like herself. She didn't in the end speak all that much russian after being in america most of her life-but she could taste it. and she liked the taste.

Which was why Sanka the one russian resstraunt in cape hope proper was such a mixed bag. It was legitimetatly a russian restraunt. Labai who owned it was a real russian as well. She moved to america in some kind of diplomatic incident in the cold War in the 80s and opened it. She had talked to her about her tales of life in the old country as a mid level...something...who had did..something to get here. And she knew what russian food tasted. Fatty, and strong and something...

But it was not a good restraunt. The tile floor looked clean but cold. the booths where sparse and hard. It suggested some kind of cold utiltarian dream-which in fairness russia could be like-but there..it wasn't a warmth that brought it out but...well there was something. The most you could say for Sanka was its warm. It was usually heated to the hieg 80s from the kitchen and the heater even on the hotest days of restruant

a foodie could have described all of this as ambiance--but well the food wasn't good either. It tended to the kind of fatty that was unpleasent, the kind of salty that stuck to your tounge. The fresh carp was fresh...but well-and thats what got her. What got Detect gonza was that it wasn't wrong. It taste authentic. These where dishes you could have gotten better in moscow-but you could have gotten them there eqaully well. She had found some messure of the russian experience..and made it..middling at its best. Even the cola was slightly warm which was true to the experience..

Gonza had picked this restraunt- she didn't quite know. This was going to be an akward conversation and this was an akward place so what could you do. She was talking to someone who she barely knew-she had met ms. Ledbetter a year before at a fundraiser, but the name the reports where there. She was doing somehting and trying to keep a low profile..but well you didn't even have to be a detective to trace it if you where looking-and Gonza was a detective.

but..Well she wanted to do this in a public place. She wanted to do it as a friend (despite not actually being a friend), and she despertly didn't want to do it in a policeroom that was bugged and if this went poorly or well get very easily to the chief...

So...

she had setup a late lunch at 1:00 oclock to talk about stuff in the friendliest manner possible and....

Mary hadn't been sure whether to come. But given what had happened in the last few days, she realised that ignoring this might be far more dangerous.
"Is this something to do with my dad?" Mary asked, taking a sip of her coke. Looking the detective over, Mary couldn't imagine this woman had called her to her to talk about her father. Her fear of being blackmailed was not as strong now, either. There was something...trustworthy...about her. Did she know? Did Detective Gonza know Mary could bounce bullets of herself? It was hard for Mary to read the older woman's face. Oh well, I guess I'll find out soon enough, thought Mary.

"No this is about you"

gonza new about people. It really more then guns, forensics-that was the skill of a cop. to measure someone. And no matter what else was going on...well she was a person. Which wasn't always a good thing now was it. she was scared. Which was useful.

Gonza spoke in measured tones not wanting to revel her own emotions. She was a decent poker player which was a skill for the police. "So far two incidents i can pin, half a dozen more in town. I am investiginating some new devolopments in the city, some new discoveries of well......its hard to say out loud. The one i can directly tie you in involved a karate dojo-10 men. You Ms. Ledbetter where there. There are reports of guns bouncing off. Now that happens- i mean the reports. People have fired a dozen bullets a person at point blank range and people walk away without a scratch-more often then you think. its easy to miss with a gun....but not after a...well i am not going to say how much you weigh people breaks several bones and defeats a former Army ranger."

Mary frowned.
"How much does my father know? You haven't told him, have you? Not that it matters...if you worked this out then he will eventually figure it out too."
Mary knew if she started doing stuff, helping people with her strength would lead to some uncomfortable conversations, but she hadn't imagined it would happen so fast. She didn't know this woman very well at all, and it seemsd Gonza knew her most intimate secret. There was something unfair about that.

Anna didn't consider herself the hardest cop on the beat by a long shot. when it was her time to play the Bad cop, it wasn't a role that she came to super naturally. There was something slightly unconfterable to be outright intimidating and mean. Chief Ledbetter could defiently do it. But. She couldn't be dirty hairy.

but she could be a hero cop.Yes she was about as a strong as a woman naturally could be. Yes she was tough., and powerful and had beat up perps on pcp in a fight without complaint-she did it becuse well it was her nature.

This woman-well was that what she was?.

what she was was giving her something. One of the reasons that she hadn't put it in a report yet-wasn't that her father didn't know and she didn't want to find out-but well that her father did know. Sure he was taking the conceit that these super incidents either a) didn't exist b) where the scum of the earth...But well Anna had seen the batman movies. Bruce Wayne always said that.

"Is that what you want? Your probabbly right. But Heres the thing about cops- For every crime- theres maybe a hundred we don't solve, that don't even come into the station Guy beats his wife robbery, hell murder sometimes -it happens its life. You in my position its part of the noise. We only really solve a crime figure it out-when someone takes an intrest. And what you do screams intrest. You appear on youtube for five seconds we take a big interest

She shrugged.

"But to Anwser your question no i haven't put it in an offical report"

Mary tried not to look too relieved.
"Those men at the Dojo...you know what they were up to, don't you? And that woman the other day...It wasn't really a mugging. I didn't want to run off with her purse...I just wanted to get her name. She was in on that heist, and if I didn't stop them they all would have gotten away." Mary stopped herself...maybe it would be better to find out how much the detective knew before spilling out her life story. "Just exactly why are we meeting in some unknown restaurant in the middle of nowhere, detective?"

anna shrugged.

"No i don't in fact know what the guys in the dojo did. But i bet something? If i where to do that-well i would be the kind of cop i don't like. In theroy a cop is never supose to use his gun really beat anyone other then to protect his life or someone else-but you..you really did get shot-like i said maybe thats exageration. i bet you can lift a tank right?"

"And why i am talking to you-well to get to know you. to see what comes next. What that is depends a lot on you"

"They've been running an extortion racket for years. What I did to them was give them what they deserved. Lift a tank? I never thought about it, but yeah, I probably could lift a tank. It's weird. I'm not real sure how strong I really am. Who told you about the bullets? I haven't told a soul about that."

Anna paused. she took her gun out and put it out.

"If i shoot this gun-people look into it. doesn't matter if i hit air, or a wall Theres a DA team that investigates. Forensics come out. Hell take the gun out of the holster i should file a report on it. you can't take a gun, you can't shot a gun without someone knowing about it, without someone taking a little bit of an intrest. Guns are like that. "
She shrugged and took a sip of a coke.

"What this is all about Mary...is your a gun"

Mary thought about what it was Detective Gonza was getting at.
"This isn't just a speech about power and responsibility is it? You have met my father haven't you? He's been drumming that shit into me for years! You aren't going to tell anyone about me are you? I haven't done anything bad...I haven't killed anyone or anything..."

Anna looked at Mary.

"Let me guess. you discovered some kind of super powers-tanks. God. I don't quite belive you. it whould destroy your skeletal system. But okay. You get superpowers-and you go to a comic store read all the issues of batman -superheros don't kill there sterling examples of humanity cause they don't kill people. "

Anna paused she took a drink of an unexepctional soda.

"I call you a gun cause your a wepion. People don't like wepions. They fear wepions, but in the proper light they respect them. They idolize them. or they just run away in terror. There is never any real middle ground there. The point is you keep going out doing stuff like this-people are going to notice. And when they do what are they going to say?"

"Thank you, I hope," Mary suggested. "So are you saying I should let people I know are doing bad things keep on doing them? How can I do nothing when it's so easy for me to stop them? I mean...I'd never kill anybody! I'm like...like...well, more like a taser."

anna sighed.

"Extortion. thats typically 3-5 year Sentance. Serve 1- a ring multiple charges probabbly closer to 5. People talk about soap on a rope and daily beatings by guards-its bad but not bad. its not...its not get beat to one inch of your life. And people die of Tasers every year. Weak heart, double shot, do it near water. You keep doing what your doing the way your doing your comicbook logic is going to fail at some point. "

Anna paused.

"But i am not really sure i am asking you to stop. Cause this isn't extorition i am not going to demand you do either way"

Mary shifted uncomfortably.
"I need to do this. You've seen the news...I'm not the only one like me. I met someone who can sense others like me, and he says there are more every day. They're not all out to do good things, you know. How would you stop someone who makes earthquakes? Or lights fires with their mind? Or someone who can shoot lasers out their hands? I can stop people like that."

"Your right of course. Quite frankly i think some of the stuff i think your doing is probabbly-i don't know 10 other people. now i am not sure we need your are only hope. Hell I suspect some of them are thinking exactly like you are- they can do good. There reports of someone in a silly costume running over the university shooting light beams out of her hand. "

" but I guess heres my point. If your going to be Superman-be Superman. or Supergirl or something. being Mary of the shadows is going to get you on the front page sooner or latter, and its not going to be flattering. People aren't going to like what they see.

"So you want me to step out of shadows? Own this thing? Come on, Detective...I'm a minor, and there's no way on Earth my dad would ever let me do this stuff. No way. The minute I come out and tell anyone, that'll be the end of it...he'll be watching me like a hawk. And besides, even Supeman doesn't tell everyone who Clark Kent really is. I don't want my friends to be afraid of me. I don't want my boyfriend to know either...he already has major issues because of my dad."

Mary was starting to feel a little bit of panic building up inside her. Did this nosey detective really think she would find it easy to step up and say 'Check me out...I'm way stronger than anyone else and there's almost nothing any normal person could do to stop me'?
"What are trying to do? You're mental if you think I'm going public! Forget it. It's not going to happen! If you want to arrest me for what I've done, then go ahead. The charges will never stick. I mean...what if you did charge me with beating up those kung-fools? Who's going to believe you? Even if you get the DA to press charges, there's no judge or jury that's going to convict me. Who's going to believe a little girl like me could beat up a whole dojo of black-belts? Who in their right mind is going to buy that? I wouldn't even need a good lawyer to get the case dismissed outright."

"I agree" said Anna "Totally. Hard Case the DA looks at it throw it away, Hearsay and Conjecture brought me here . "

"Think about your next case though. "

Anna paused "Your scared. Good. Fear is useful. Don't misunderstand me. I am sympathetic. you want to help. you have been given this great gift- and your first impulse isn't to rob a bank or anything dumb like that/ Your doing what you think is right and that is a good idea at the very least. But be smart

The trouble was, Mary knew Gonza was right. But like any teenager, knowing the adult is telling the truth doesn't necessarily make it readily acceptable. Gonza had arranged this meeting instead of putting Mary's secret out there for everyone to see, so she decided to at least hear her out before closing the door on her.
"Just what exactly did you have in mind? You must have some sort of plan, or you'd be talking to my father, not to me."

This was this hard part.

"First thing. this file. this doesn't go anywhere. Thats my promise to you. This incident at karate kid school. its not going to the DA anywhere. By the same token- i can't protect you. I am a cop on the street. not the entire department either really. Maybe the Cia but..."

"As i see it. You have two options.

Option one is you walk out of here Mary Ledbetter. You never do this agian. i put this file away. Your a normal high schooler. You have indicated you don't want to do that.

"Option two"

anna paused

"Option two is public relations. This isn't going public persay but public relations. "

"Try the Cobb Sallad."

Mary paused the kind of very long pause that one doesn't want to do...but.....

"I am talking about a cape, and a mask, and tights. i would recomend a really good mask. Something that really covers as much as your head as possible. I would suggest either a wig or something that changes your hair. Beyond that.... i don't know.

"Public is either going to fear you or love you. Probabbly love you if you let them. I am not sure a press confrence-not at first at least...."

Mary chewed her mouthful of salad and stared at Gonza, finally swallowing before taking a swig of warm of coke.
"You mean, like a superhero? You want me to dress up like Kick-Ass?"
Mary didn't want to admit that after the incident with the mugging she had actually started thinking about doing just that.
"Wait a minute...did you say cape? I am not wearing a cape." Mary put down her fork. "Are you offering to help me? What's in this for you? Why would you want to help me?"

The silence dragged out and Mary felt a little bad for asking before long.
"I didn't mean to seem ungrateful," she told her. "It's just...I kinda feel a bit...exposed...right now. I mean...I've been hiding this for so long. But I couldn't let what Uncle Jim's goons were doing to Danny keep happening. I did what I had to do. The truth is I have been thinking about putting on a mask...hiding my identity so I can do stuff without worrying. Hearing it from you makes me feel a little less mental. Did you know that Jim tried to slice me up with a sword? And that he shot me? I'll never forget the look on his face when the bullet didn't do anything to me. Did you know I'm bulletproof? Well I am. And it wasn't like wearing a vest, where the guy still gets knocked over. I hardly felt a thing."
Even as she spoke, Mary realised that for whatever reason she trusted this nosey detective. All good detectives were, after all, nosey.
"And I still don't know how strong I am. I just seem to always be strong enough to lift, bend, or break whatever I lay my hands on. But it's, like, real easy to control myself. Like, I never have to worry about crushing Danny when make...when we snuggle. He doesn't even know I'm a...a freak."
