Shortstory Workshop comeback?

13 Jan 2012 05:53 #25928 by njae
Shortstory Workshop comeback? was created by njae
While suggesting themes for the next workshop the idea of a new shortstory workshop came up. This thread is to discuss whether this kind of workshop would be a good idea as the last installment was more than five years ago.

This thread can also be used for topic suggestions in case there will be another shortstory workshop. Keep in mind that a theme that works for a full-length story doesn't necessarily work for a limit of 1000 words.

Here are some suggestions of the other thread that might also work as a shortstory (plus some of my own).

Workshop Themes reloaded - This time with the old shortstory themes.

Family

Origin story "Woman gets superpowers" - It might be interesting to see some creative ideas here, since the word limit doesn't allow for too much developement.

Argo recently suggested "A superwoman walks into a bar..." as a short story theme.

I didn't think my idea would be taken into account like this. Don;t know if my vote matters since I'm sort of silent on most parts but I vote on some short workshops. With my academics slowing down finally I have some free time to do what I please so I may join in on this as well.

How about a story that focuses on a single superpower? Everyone could pick a power from the list.

Superhuman strength.
Invulnerability.
Superhuman stamina.
Flight.
Superhuman speed.
Heat vision.
Super hearing.
Super breath.
Super vision.
Super intellect.

As I said in the other thread, that theme (Origin story) clashed with the "new beginnings" theme of Spring 2011, but this doesn't apply for the shortstory workshops. It also helps that I'm a huge fan of this genre myself as my first story shows. So this theme could also be a good opportunity for other newcomers.

Here's another suggestion of mine:

Uncomfortable superpower moment - We all know it; having superpowers isn't always fun and games and there are situations where the woman in question would prefer not to have them. This could be the world of cardboard problems that come with her super strength, or the lack of control of her super hearing. What if she tries to have a secret identity but accidentally starts using her powers (or transform into her alter ego) in public and now has to find a way to deal with it? How long is it fun to read or control her dates mind? What about empathic powers for a super bad girl?

This could be combined with G7s suggestion to pick the power that makes it uncomfortable beforehand.

I would definitely like to see more of the short workshops. Of the ideas so far, I would personally choose either "A superwoman walks into a bar" or "Uncomfortable superpower moment".

Another possible idea is "A super dilemma" which could include whether to save one person or another, whether to reveal a secret identity or not, whether to turn to crime or not, etc.

It's good to see a fair bit of support for reviving these.

Indeed it's nice that the idea is well received. Any words from the officials?

I like the uncomfortable super moment idea a lot.
It lets a superfemme be human and imperfect while not limiting her poweres.

Any news on this one? The long workshop is over, the polls are closed and the topic for the shortstory workshop had been decided month ago. And it seems like G7s "The Neutral Ground" would have been perfect for the decided topic "A superwoman walks into a bar".

That was the inspiration for it.

Mind you, 3 of my last 4 stories have had a superwoman walk into a bar...

I would like that too, since I wanna start SSG-Storys as well and think, the motivation is higher when there is a "competition". And of course it`s easier doing that in a short-story since you (mostly) have only to handle one storyline.

Don't forget the deadline, nothing tells you "get your ass moving and finish this" than a slowly but mercilessly approaching submission date.

Which is basically all that the next Shortstory Workshop is missing considering there's already a topic.
