Short Workshop Length Discussion

This is an old subject of discussion, but I don't think it has ever been addressed ina single topic.

The short format workshops were originally meant to be a stopgap measure between the full-length workshops, but they have eveolved into a thing of their own with equal importance as their bigger brothers.

Now the big question: do you think that the 1000 words limit is a problem?

In the past some users brought this subject forward, suggesting to increase the word limit to various length. Personally i think that squeezing a significant story within those 1000 words is part of the challenge, but re-reading some of the old workshops, I can see that many stories would have benefited from a little extra room.

So what do you think. Should we change the rules for the next short workshop? Should we not?

1000 words is WAY too short. These aren't stories they are scenes - one joke ponies, set-ups for stories - not stories. Almost teasers. I think 2,000 would be much better or 2k-3k or maybe no set length.

There were some nice teasers though :)

No set length would be pointless, since we already have the normal workshops for that.

I think the purpose of the 1K story WS is to encourage new writers and more stories. For that, I think its been a great success. Now though, I’ve noticed many authors not contribute because their story goes over the 1000 word mark.

I think you should maintain the 1000 word WS, as to not discourage people who might be intimidated by feeling they need to write something more. But Perhaps call it an under 3000 WS?

That being said, the stories in these workshops have all been fun a read and I’ve enjoyed them. The problem of course being, the better the story the longer I want to read =)
Thanks again to all those who contributed

That was the general idea.

Personally I looked over my not quite finished story today that I had been working on, and its around 1500 at about 70% complete. So it may end up around 2000 when finished, and it was/is/will be my first written story. Maybe have 1000 as a floor?

I would rather not have a floor here, since it might force some authors to artificially lengthen their stories, whcih is usually pretty bad (the first version of Fly Me To Honeymoon was 950 words).

I'd agree with that....last thing we'd want is to discourage new authors who have great new ideas.

This is reminding me of stuff I've done in the past regarding report writing, where I was given a strict limit of say 5 pages, and I'd find myself tweaking all manner of guides and values to make stuff fit- font size, margins, line spacing, character spacing. Anything to make it fit or not seem quite deficient without looking like it was being messed with to do so. :) Then everyone went for digital submissions, and you couldn't do that too much anymore. :(
