I need to do some reading to make sure it's not close to something that's already been done and figure out a plot.
Some pages (TV Tropes Warning) that I'm going to look over while brainstorming that might help others:
PowerParasite
AssimilationBackfire

you might consider this a bit on a unncessary bump, but I got a couple of things.
First, I'd like to have a more precise idea of who is in with this workshop who's not, so I'd like if those who are thinking of participating can please raise hands? Thank you.
Even if you're not going to contribute directly I'd like to have a round up of people who are willing to help by doing beta-reading and proofreading.
Second. I got a couple of question about the "catch" part of the story. So I wish to ask all of you to provide some examples (not necessarily what you're going to use in your entry) so that we can all be on the same page.

Examples of a catch:
- In order to keep her powers, she must take at least one innocent life every week.
- The power transfer was corrupted, and every time she uses her powers, a dark force inside her grows and turns her towards evil.
- As a mere human, her new powers will kill her unless she regularly takes a drug, the supply of which is strictly controlled by somebody with an agenda she doesn't share.
- Every time she uses one of her powers, $100 is deducted from her checking account.

Is it power freely given, power stolen, power shared, or any/all of those?

From earlier discussions, the answer would be YES, YES, and YES. Any way of transferring power, as long as it comes with some kind of a catch.

**Proximity**
by Shadar
It happened the first time as I arrived in Metropolis.
I’d just shuttled into the city from the airport and was wandering around, staring up in wonder at the tall buildings, the smell and feel and sounds of this famous city washing over me.
I’ve never lived in a city, not even near one, preferring instead to live on whatever beach had the best waves that week. Yet if all went as planned, I was going to spend the next six years in the never-ending din and crowding of this mighty city.
I was walking down the street, trying to drink it all in, searching for a handle to grab my new life, when I bumped into a tall, solidly built man wearing glasses and an ill-fitting suit. A staggering flash of prickling heat came out of nowhere to explode inside me, the prickling quickly fading to an energetic rush of the purest pleasure.
The man dove one way, a startled look on his face, and I staggered in the opposite direction, finally collapsing behind a dumpster as I cried out again and again as waves of ecstasy wracking me from inside out and head to toe, the sensation beyond anything sexual. It was like every cell of my body was having its own little orgasm.
So naturally, I was terrified.
I know my body better than most people given I’ve been a big wave surfer since I went pro at the tender age of fourteen. During the five years since then, I’ve surfed monster waves all around the planet, and I’m the only woman who has beaten most of the men at one time or another in this most dangerous and physical type of surfing. Sixty foot waves crashing over coral, yet somehow I’ve always come up after a wipeout without injury.
I staggered out of the alleyway, dirty and disheveled, my top torn where I'd clutched myself, my eyes a bit crosseyed. I struggled to walk, but my legs felt all rubbery and shaking. I barely felt it when my foot slipped off the curb and I fell face first in the street. Terrified, I struggled to get up, only to see a huge bumper pass over my head as a squealing tire rolled over the back of my head to smash my face into the concrete, the wheel locking to push me along the street, my face carrying the entire weight on that wheel.
Everything went black as I realized with horror that after all those years of dangerous surfing, I was going to die on my first day in Metropolis.

argonaut wrote: I've got an idea for a "catch," but it doesn't involve power transfer. Still, I might write the story and submit it by the July 31 deadline. You can either send it to the Library or post it with the other entries but exclude it from the poll.
That's a the right attitude, thank you Argo

I can confirm what Shadar just said: any of those scenarios are perfectly valid as long as a significant amount of power change hands in the process.

Pink Floyd's Endless River at the moment. I'm a total Floyd head.
That said, for ten years back in the day, when writing most of the AU, I only listened to Enya when writing. For reasons I can't explain, my inner Muse took most of her flights of fancy with Enya. I was just the scribe, writing things down.

Enya often works great from me, especially of mixed with a bit of Blackmore's Night, but what tend to play in my head most of the time are the Iron Maiden.
