This is a fairly puff piece, and doesn't really fight much for it's premise. It does mention that DC movies, they don't really care what people say, it's making $$, so they're going to keep doing it. And part of the article was arguing about tone. It's fine to say you like light things more -- but that doesn't mean that someone shouldn't try something else. (And this is coming from someone who, in balance, probably doesn't like BvS and didn't like MoS.)

It also doesn't mention DC Animated, which in balance has been fantastic, far outstripping anything Marvel has done. It's got a Loooong legacy of excellence: Batman the Animated Adventures, Superman, Justice League (Unlimited), Teen Titans, and Young Justice. Even Green Lantern wasn't as bad as some people make it out to be (it's better than almost anything Marvel has done in the last decade, except maybe the Avengers).

Even most of the little shorts made to play during the breaks were good.

I thought Batman Brave and the Bold was really fun. I haven't watched The Batman, i'll get to that. Forgot about Batman Beyond, which was also reasonable. LOTS of shows, with a fairly consistent quality level.

I'm re-watching JLU, and I'd forgotten how fun it was, and how good it was at using characters. I'll re-watch Young Justice next.

(We shall not speak of Teen Titans Go.)

And that doesn't count the long string of Animated Movies, with a fairly good quality level. Not every one is incredible, but they're all quality, usually with top notch voice acting. But then I think Andrea Romano is a genius -- and she's responsible for the most inspired voice casting of all time: Ed Asner as Granny Goodness.

I do enjoy the spectacle of the large live action movies, but Batman: Arkham Asylum might be better than Suicide Squad (we'll see when it comes out).

Problem is that it seem that the team has limited bandwidth. In order to have the quality, you can only do so much with the team that is putting that out...

I agree on the point that DC Animated has excellent writing. Very enjoyable, other than the fact that it's not live-action. Can't comment on B vs S as I haven't seen it, but to say that the TV shows are the future for DC Comics is scary.

Yes, the TV shows involve more traditional characters and have more of the mood and flavor of the comics, and that's good, but they're written by sixth-graders. It's like they have to cram all those characters into the shows, even if they don't have the time or imagination to come up with plausible story lines for them.

If I was DC, I'd get involved in improving the writing to something approaching what they've done with the Animated shows. The writers obviously exist to do that, but they aren't using them.

Put that quality of writing into the Supergirl and Flash shows and you'd knock some socks off. And then, yes, that would define the future of DC's non-print offerings.

I would phrase it DC does to kinds of projects:

1. Hyper Budgeted kinda of over produced blockbusters(ie its theaterically released movies)

2. Realitivly low budget stuff- Like TV, The Animated Movies, Cartoons and Even some webstuff.

Of of the two in terms of intrest online and yeah probabbly proffit as Dollars to investment ratio the TV stuff is the stuff where there making money. Flash and Arrow are both probabbly close to Syndication, Supergirl seems to be doing well enough, and the Cartoon stuff seems like its chuging alone.

But they also are produced in somewhat very diffrent way. The Movies are all about Taking there big A list characters-Batman Superman-and making the biggest largest movies possible for them-epics really, that have only gotten bigger. Its based part on-Well i know who superman is you know who superman is, your mom knows who superman is(especially last night).Dawn of Justice tried to break that formula by introducing a couple of there More or less A list characters-But i would bet a lot of People know who Wonder Woman is, and Aquaman is. But it still all very safe choices(the one exception was Cyborg...a character i am hearing may loose his movie which is sad). But the idea: Lets take a character put balls to the walls and give him something he deserves.

The Smaller ones by and large aschew that. Flash is kinda of an A list character- Green Arrow Not so much. Supergirl, mhhh.. However Recently they have luck with a show staring The Atom, Firestorm both fairly minor really C characters, Rip Hunter who probabbly doesn't rate a C, and Really stars Captian Cold who is a villian of a B list Superhero. So small. And to these the format in The Four live action shows and a lot of the animated shows is-lets throw as many comics stuff as we can, obscure characters reduing plotlines and ideas-what iffs, parodoxes time travel etc etc all of it. The Animated movies are yeah Batman-but its comic nerds batman. its Damon Wayne and Batwoman Batman-not hey heres the joker.

This is one of DCS comics strengths. The Flash was a good character. What they Put around Flash is one of the best ever, and even though his power can be a touch generic and sometimes the guy-it works. Worked well, and most of the shows have sucseed at just doing that, and making something out of Vandal Savage.

But it can be hit and miss. Supergirl is the best example. Its a show that technical wise is just so almost there that its heartbreaking-but its not they really don't have quite the budget to pull off there ambition-and yeah it shows. If you could put any episode of Supergirl and gave it the budget of 48 minuts of DAwn of justice it would be awesom-but it doesn't....

To contrast this to marvel: Was watching the trailer for Dr. Strange-which was okay. I am not going with great-but it is a movie they clearly spent a lot of time and energy getting the look of it down and it shows. And Dr Strange is yeah A B C character. hes obecure. But they where able to take that, take his iconography and a couple of WEllish known actor to make something. And thats good. Its also probabbly a lot lot less expensive then Dawn of Justice to.

All of there Movies and TV show stuff feels more or less to the same point with the same ambition-Its consitent-it also which i think is one of the problems wit the TV Go quite as far. You don't see the Giant Shark men marvel does on TV, where they could which i think sometimes hurts it. But the consitency is something.

Sucide Squad obviould was started out as an attempt to play with the formula-take a movie lead by two kinda big Batman Villian and sees where it goes-the original idea was that it was going to be less expensive to inline with the cost of Dr Strange(though it probabbly is going to get higher-Warner Brothers movies are known for being bigger then budgeted in general). So lets see. who knows.
