- Supergirl needs to earn money. What should she do?
Supergirl needs to earn money. What should she do?
Here are some examples:
1. Steelworker. She could fly the beams up and weld them into place all on her own.
2. Smelter operator at a steel mill. Those furnaces requre a lot of expensive energy to get and keep going.
3. Ship salvage. She could lift ships up from the bottom of the sea and fly them to a dry dock.
4. ?

Yohashuan, yeah that would work. Probably tons of old gold down below. Doubt she'd have to work on commission however. She could pretty much keep whatever she finds if it was in international waters.
Mirk, that would pay a pretty penny. Imagine how many millions are spent on rocket boosters, launch control, training, etc. You could just have one dude tell her where and when you wanted something delivered and you'd have a huge success rate. Save money on insurance knowing the rocket wasn't going to blow up.

Alexa
d_k_c I was thinking of good girl stuff and then moving on to bad girl stuff.

That is true but I'm curious to know what people think of a 'Good' Supergirl would need to do to make $$. An evil one would be a different post. Anyone feel free to fire one up and we can all post our ideas there.
I was thinking about energy today probably after filling my car up and paying an arm and a leg for it. If Supergirl did exist would you be able to create large flywheels that were in parallel that she could spin up all at once with one mighty pull of her arm on a steel cable? Kind of like the old zip cars I used to have as a kid. The kind with the plastic ziptie starting thing that you inserted into a sprocket. You gave a yank on it and the heavy wheel it was attached to would rotate to beat all hell. Then you'd set it down and it would take off. Lot of energy stored in it. Think of 50 ton flywheels all in a row or mechanically connected. I used 50-ton because it would be semi manageable to manufacture, transport, and maintain. They would be enclosed in a vacuum on some type of ball bearing surface. Not sure on the physics of it all but she could get them up to speed by pulling on an attached cable slowly at first and then faster. You'd have to have a big dial for her to see so she could gauge when they were up to speed and not beyond it. 50 tons of rotating mass would take a lot to slow down or stop. They would all be geared to a central shaft that ran a large generator or possibly individually.
1 minute of work on her part would equal say $10,000? Of course a guy like me would be filming it all for posterior err I mean posterity. Is that spelled correctly?
Keep em coming. It is not enough to just say 'heavy lifting'. Give an example.

So, if she needs money.. .. Doing it "the old fashion way" is probably the best answer.

Then when I really thought about it, there was nothing I could think of that I can consider a job for Supergirl. About your zip dynamo, you actually need the resistance to generate electricity, so you have to be keep spinning it against the resistance. Not just one pull. If that would be the case, you'll need a very large storage battery to store that power. If we had that battery we'll be harnessing lightning for power now.
What I thought about was using her fame, kinda like Glory who does photo shoots in Hawaii, taking in a percentage in pay per view earnings. The shoots could have a scenario or just basic shoots like bikini destinations.
I believe this idea has been done before, sorry.

2: Use credit card to buy hundreds of bags of coal.
3: Squeeze coal into diamonds
4: Sell diamonds for cash. Use cash to pay off credit card bill.
5: Enjoy being rich!

Digging mine shafts
Blowing up party baloons
Advanced Welding
Space Station Building
X-Ray Tech
Car Crusher at Junk Yard
Athlete (just not too good)
...I would think any advanced position in education or research.

Random321, blowing up party baloons would be good only if it was for the extrememly rich. Some rich asshole hires her for his brats birthday and thinks he'll humiliate her a little by having her blow up party baloons. She could get pissed and blow up a couple hundred using heated breath (possible?) and then tying them all into one bundle. The bundle would be attached to his belt and off he'd go. Everyone would laugh at him struggling. She'd then pop them one at a time with her laser vision. Each pop would scare him and by the time he descended into the pool he'd be a wreck.

if there were writers left
> cough! < Yeah ... the well seems to have run dry.
Ace and I are at work on the next installment of "The Supergirl of Smallville." We've finished Chapters 11, 13, and 14 -- and I hope to start writing Chapter 12 this week. And yes, the update will include four illustrations by TGK.
I've been collaborating with another member on another project. I'd rather keep it under wraps for the moment, but I hope it will be "go" before too long.
My job and personal life have been keeping me pretty busy lately, but I should have some "discretionary time" this summer. If all goes well, I hope to crank out a story or two.
Are any other writers at work on anything?

CPT Marbles that was a good one. So obvious and right in front of us. Is it possible however that the flooded market would crumble? Debeers (Sp?) has a tight monopoly on diamonds now that keeps them artificially high. I'd love to see it crumble and then have them send goons after her or try to take her out with some superweapon. Of course then we'd get to see some good action of her destroying them. Maybe then she'd really flood the market. So much so that diamonds became as common as say cubic zirconium.
Well, diamonds still have industrial uses, so even if they become commonplace, they're still worth good money. Besides, I think a lot of people would pay a pretty penny for a hand crafted diamond from a Supergirl.

Hey, Sarge:
Good to have you back in the U.S. of A. and posting on the forum again. SWM has been kind of quiet lately. A few of our regulars seem to have disappeared, others are posting less frequently. So thanks for putting some life back into the forum!
I like this idea. May I have your permission to use it in a story? I'm thinking of a one-off story set in the Transformatrix Universe. OR -- I've been writing some scripts for SuperSexyHeroines, and this might make a good photo-comic. (Please keep that under your hat -- I don't want to say anything about it on the forum until one of my stories actually gets produced and posted.)
Thanks --
Argo

An intersting article on making diamonds.
~500 tons of pressure, or 1 million pounds per square inch. The internal temps reach upwards of 2500 degrees.
Whoa.

Yeah, that was supposed to be a private message. I was in a hurry to send it off before lunch, and didn't realize I was posting to the forum.
Oh, well. Hey, at least it elicited a post from you! We haven't heard from you in a while.
Say, how about flying back in time and warning me not to hit the "submit" button on that messae? Please and thank you!

I'd help you out, but I don't want to mess up any time lines. At least that's my excuse.

Yes, by all means use anything I discuss for anything you want. It is all freely written here. I really don't write anything. Just post a bit and try to stir the dying coals now and again or add some fuel to the fires.
Ultragirl, good to see you here again. Wonder where the hell Conceptfan is. Hope he is well and just busy. Hope he 'unbusies' himself soon. Gawd I miss his updates. Miss the Transformatrix stories too.
Back to the topic: Supergirl would be great at disposing of nuclear waste. One way shot to the sun. Or store it on the moon if there is any possibility of it being usable again in the future. Would be a great boon to the nuke movement. One of the best alternatives we have going as long as they aren't crappily built like in Russia. Most modern countries have enough fail safes and triple checks to keep them from ever melting down.
