New Josh Whedon show on HBO features Victorian women with superpowers

14 Jul 2018 05:56 #60158 by shadar
Josh says this might be his most ambitious project yet.  An HBO series about Victorian-age women who gain superpowers and decide to fix the world. Or so it seems.

One thing Josh knows how to do is to portray young women with superpowers. Or at least, that's his fantasy, and he keeps trying to get it right.

Sounds good to me :)

Not only does he write strong female characters, I personally really like his writing style in general.  His best, imo, was Firefly.  The quick-witted, pop-culture loaded banter that flies between his characters, is seldom matched by other writer who try to imitate him.

In that style, I think I would place Joss, Tarentino and Williamson.  They defined the ninties with that style in particular.

And its about superwomen :D  Whats not to like :D

The only downside reading this article was that no production start date or anything has been set.  So heres wishing it gets the go ahead soon /fingers crossed.

On the plus side, HBO needs to start pumping out more quality - with GoT ending next season, they don't really offer much compared to their rivals - Netfilx, Amazon, etc.  Will be interesting to see how this develops.

Peace.

I agree with all your points, K. I will add that this wasn’t something HBO asked him to do, but it was independently created by Josh who then shopped it out to HBO.  That’s where Josh does his best work. Asking him to develop someone else’s idea doesn’t work well.

Of course, I don’t know for sure what ”greenlighting” a project at this level means. I suspect it means that HBO will fund him to pull together a production team and writers to turn his narrative into scripts. Its a big journey from there to streaming episodes. But Josh and HBO will hopefully work well together. As we all know, Josh is infamously unreceptive to networks trying to tweak his shows.

Back when Firefly was being produced, Fox objected to the marriage of Zoe and Wash (for reasons we can guess at). Josh said they were married on his show and if Fox didn’t like it, he’d take the show elsewhere.  Fox gave in, but I wish they hadn’t. Fox didn’t do the show any favors. But that was before HBO, Netflix, etc were producing their own shows. Lots of opportunitirs today, and HBO needs a GOT replacement. I suspect they will try a number of approaches.

But how cool would it be if a show with female superhumans got as popular as GOT and had those budget and production values. Makes me giddy thinking about it.

Looks like his massive love for "The Power" was directed to this new (?) idea/project - since he couldn't put his hands on the book rights (they were already sold when he read it).

What shocked me more was to read in the 'suggested news' of the same website about a new "Watchmen" tv-serie, without the original characters (?!) and following the comic book ending, not the movie (?!?).
