The new rumor is that new big screen Supergirl will first appear in 2025s Superman: Legacy before appearing in Supergirl: Woman of Tommorow. One actress said to be up for the role is Madelyn Cline.
James Gunn had talked about doing Woman of Tomorrow, although I don't much care for the comic story line that's out there now. So I'm not surprised we're hearing a bit more by now.
Casting and writing for the role is tricky, with wild variations in what people think is appropriate. My guess is they won't go with an A-list actress given the expense.
Here are some AI images that borrow their look from real women, and are my idea of how SG should look. She should either be young and cute, or early to mid-20's and seriously hot, and very, very blonde and blue-eyed.

As you point out, Shadar, Supergirl ranges from young (18-20 years old?), cute, and innocent, up til grown (mid 20s), hot, and confident. All of these are supergirl, but different versions of her.
In terms of my own opinion, I’m mixed on the announced actress, but I’m willing to give her a chance/withhold criticism until we have been shown more of what she can do with the role.

Casting for a character like Supergirl ain’t easy as people have vey different ideas on how she should look and act, while the studio also have t recognize the fact that there isn’t one single version of Supergirl.

Of more importance, IMHO, is the script. Gunn gives me some hope, but like the choice of actress, it all gets very personal for fans given we've got many different takes on SG. Some of us grew up with her in the comics from day one, and that's been a wild and not always pleasant journey. But we all remember our personal bright points in that evolution, and always hope the writers and director feel the same way.
Odds are low that they will. So we just have to enjoy what comes out the best we can.
But we can dream...
Speaking of which, here is a pict of Kal El and Diana's half Amazonian and half Kryptonian daughters. That could make a hell of movie, with old and new challenges for a new generation of heroines.

I see Ellen Fanning in the role especially because of the Fame perfume advertisement. When in the ad it seems that she is lying on the ceiling in a silver jumpsuit.
I hope that the one they choose is for my nephews what Helen Slater was for me.

As far as Sydney Sweeney, she's definitely overbooked. That announcement about Barbarella is fantastic news. I can't image how they'll do a Barbarella reboot in this day and age and keep the hedonistic nature of the original, but I'm at least very happy she wasn't "swapped". I think she'll do a good job of it. Maybe they'll stay somewhat close to Sarah Hoyt's recent Barbarella comics on Dynamite - they're pretty solidly written with generally amazing art, and if they include her little pet, Vix, that could be a great stuffed toy for merchandising.

At least she already knows how to work a blonde wig and fly, ala Dragons.

Then I saw her in other images and, well, I can see it tbh. She would look good as Kara. Has a slight other-worldly look to her, similar to Anya-Taylor Joy.
Best of luck to her. Look forward to seeing the movie.
Peace.

1) I trust James Gunn based on his track record with this stuff
2) She knows how to act
3) I think pics online, for the most part, don't do her justice. Watch an interview or two and her personality comes out a lot more to the point where I can see her as Kara. She def has a unique beauty about her. 'House Of The Dragon' Stars Talk Friendships And HILARIOUS Moments | Besties On Besties | Seventeen (youtube.com)

It starts with Kara on a red-sun planet, sitting with her dog (!!!) in some pub that's right out of Red Sonja/Conan the Barbarian, except that its set on an alien planet in a SciFi universe. A place with interstellar spaceships, but where swords are the ultimate weapon, at least on this backward planet.
She's getting drunk on her 21st birthday (with just her best friend, her dog!!) on a red-sun planet where she can actually get drunk. Given the dialog, she's clearly from some version of Earth, but is now off in the cosmos among human-type people on a backward world, looking for meaning in her life.
She gets into a fight with an aggressive Conan-type of character. Despite her lack of powers under a red sun and drunk on her ass and facing a huge, muscular barbarian warrior, she shows Amazonian-grade fighting abilities and her Kryptonian healing abilities after getting beat up and cut with a sword. But she wins the fight. Barely. Only to wind up barfing for the next day or so. But at least she's celebrated her 21st birthday with her dog... and met a new friend.
Her new friend is a girl looking for a swordsman to avenge her father's death, who becomes her companion and erstwhile employer as she hopes Kara will be the one to avenge her father. Only to have Kara's spaceship promptly stolen by the bad guy to leave her briefly stranded there. Given she's out of money, she and the younger girl fly off in the steerage class of a decrepit, stinky, nasty spaceship full of other impoverished and deprived people. Where she presumably eventually gains her powers back after escaping that red sun system.
This is NOT a setting that any other portrayal of Supergirl has ever attempted.
I have no idea if the writing will be any good, and how closely it will follow the comic, but the comic itself is pretty interesting because its wildly different than anything else I've read about Supergirl. At first I didn't like it, but it's since grown on me a bit. I'm hopeful for a movie that has some Guardians of the Galaxy vibes combined with a Kryptonian protagonist. Something Gunn is very capable of delivering, I believe.
Thank God it WON'T be set in some corporate American setting with the usual modern youth cultural influences we've become too used to (and weary of) in the Supergirl TV show. But this isn't the Supergirl of the Flash movie either. Also, we've got an actor roughly the same age as Kara is portrayed (23 versus 21) who was successful (I thought) as a young, confident Targaryen in a Game of Thrones spinoff world. She looks good in a Targaryen-style ultra-blonde wig.
Anyway, I'm encouraged by this Supergirl portrayal set in an alien, throwback sword-fighting SciFi world which portrays Kara as an almost Red Sonja'ish kind of screwed-up character with Kryptonian genetics and a heart of gold... albeit initially buried under a lot of dysfunction and trauma. Who ultimately fights the most powerful monster in the Universe -- Darkseid.
I understand she might first appear as a secondary character in a DCU movie prior to starring in her own movie.
