NO MORE WB FILMS WITH FEMALE LEADS?

Fans who’ve been watching the rise and fall and rise and fall of the possible, potential, probable, not likely, maybe happening, probably not, but then again maybe Wonder Woman movie at Warner Bros. may have new reason to despair.

According to LA Weekly’s Nikki Finke, Warners isn’t interested in making films with female leads. Her source? Warner Bros president of production Jeff Robinov who Finke quotes (through three sources) as saying: "We are no longer doing movies with women in the lead." Finke said that Robinov's sentiment/statement was confirmed by three producers.

Finke takes the broader (no pun intended) view of the alleged new “direction” for Warners, even going so far as to getting a response from Gloria Allred, comic fans will clearly see the writing on the wall for the beleaguered Wonder Woman movie that the studio had been trying to get off the ground for years now, most notably, with Joss Whedon at the helm (he signed on in March of 2005), until he left the project in February of this year. At last report, Producer Joel Silver was “struggling” with the Wonder Woman movie, and the studio had purchased another script for a possible Wonder Woman movie around the time Whedon left.

Most recently, of course, Jessica Biel’s name was bantered about as a possible Wonder Woman in the upcoming Justice League of America film, which was/is, reportedly, to be the launching pad for several solo hero film franchises, including Wonder Woman.

As Finke points out, Waren Bros. films with female leads have underperformed in the market of late, but that, Finke said, is something that has many factors, and is not solely due to the female leads.

God, are they stupid or something? Movies like Catwoman underperformed because the script and genereal ideia were STUPID, not because of a female lead.

Here's my two pence.

Just focussing on how this applies to our genre first; actually I think WB have correctly identified a real problem witha couple of films made recently (I'm thinking specifically of Catwoman and Elektra).

For me, the worst thing about these films was that the lead character was not believable. This may be a result of the lead being a woman.

Most comic book chaaracters are isolated from the rest of society and have little interaction with the world around them. This "lone wolf" mentality plays quite well with a man, but quite badly with a woman. (women are naturally much more socialable).

Also, most comic book characers are created / written by men who seem unable to balance strength (and not just physical strength) with femininity. This makes the character seem too masculine which doesn't play well on screen.

Another problam these films have is that the lead actress inevitably ends up wearing some ridiculous leather catsuit which makes the whole thing seem like more of a peep show than a movie.

However, the solution to these problems is to improve the quility of the writing, not to just stop making films with female leads!

What worries me even more though is that this "no female leads" policy applies to all films! 50% of the poplulation are women, and they like films just as muich as men. Making films with no female leads is going to alienate half the movie-going public - not a smart move!

The guy now has said that he never said that. Sure buddy, all those witnesses who relayed the story were making it up just to make you look bad. Gimme a break!

I have no trouble believing that he actually did say it. But, like helix111 said, the solution is through better writing, not stopping female leads altogether.

Personally, I have no idea what would drive women to see a WW movie since I'm a guy. Couldn't they get a woman to write the script if their goal is to attract that audience?

That explains it! Such well made, well written, well casted movies as Catwoman and they fail?? It MUST be because the lead was a female. If Catwoman was played by a huge black, furry dude it would most certainly be a resounding success.

Heres my opinion, to my knowledge, the last female lead movie was indeed Catwoman. Ignore the movie... look at catwoman in general, she is mainly a villain in Batman, and Batman was focused on male readers. The character did not have a strong enough base to even warrant a movie.

Now if they did a WW movie, she has a strong female following for over 40 years, they like the strong female character that can do whatever a male character can do. Girls like the character, guys like the character...and the outfit. So BOTH would go see a new movie

Wonder Woman had a successful TV show, Catwoman had a few guest appearances in a popular TV show.

Warner is making this decision based on past movie sales. But why should we be punished for them making a decision to fund a crappy movie based on a character that should only be a villain or supporting role.

WARNER BROTHERS, MAKE A WONDER WOMAN MOVIE! I WANT ONE, PROBABLY EVERYONE ELSE ON THIS FORUM WANTS ONE, AND A LOT OF THE POPULATION WANTS ONE. MAKE THE MOVIE BASED ON A CHARACTER THAT DESERVES ONE!

I would be particulary interested in WW if Jessica Biel played the amazon. She is pretty, has a killer body and looks like an amazon. She is also a ok actress, if well written, produced and advertised the movie could be a monstrous blockbuster.
