Of course, that doesn't mean Supergirl. She's probably the last person he'd want to tackle given she has the "Superman problem" of having too much power, even if we love her. A Supergirl movie with a bunch of Kryptonian villains running amuck to challenge her might work. Maybe the upcoming Superman movie will clarify if this makes sense.

I don't think thats the issue. All of his classic shows about superheroines have dealt less with the idea of pure power and invulerability, but giving them a problem they can't just hit. Buffy is a teenager. You can't punch that. River is crazy. Dollhouse is about the expectations we place on woman.
The supergirl stuff is more about budget. I wasn't a huge fan of the movie avengers, but i do think it had the best Superheroic Battle Scene ever done at the end-And the last 10 minutes of the avengers probabbly cost 50 million by itself. He can handle it. And if he wants the budget he can get it.
I do agree with you broadly that the supergirl isn't the best fit-but for the second issue that peter david also brought up. Supergirl is classically very much in supermans shadow, and its hard character to push out of it. If he did make a supergirl movie i suspect it would be along the lines in the Peter David Mold, but i suspect he whould want to find another trick for it.
It whould be intresting-and i whould actually hope to a degree he could do something original. His stuff he made that he created himself i think has been better then the IPS he has been hired on-and despite his love of superheroic girls hes never really made a movie that focused on them, and the kind of story you can tell versus a movie. I always thought for example that Dollhouse was a very good movie that was made into an okay TV show.
Lets see what he can do.

He's good at that, but that's not the man's true genius.

As for Supergirl, it'll never happen with him,but it's. Nice to dream. I agree with Castor that her problem is being a female Superman, not having Supermans powers. I think her personality -- angst, compulsive teenager -- is far more interesting than Supermans boy scout persona and would give Whedon some incredible material ala Buffy. Oh well....

I think the biggest problem superheroine films have had is bad story. Supergirl is just a crazy train wreck or Catwoman same thing. Going along with the problem of bad writing is changing the core of the character. Prime example being the Wonder Woman TV pilot. Bringing back Catwoman again, there's another case where the character was butchered. You have to remain true to the core of the character and what they stand for. Hunger Games worked because Katnisis came off as a believable character with a world that was developed enough. Her storyline was also connectable, working to save her sister and then to survivable.
I think a Supergirl movie could work. Much like people have said she does live in Superman's shadow. So you do probably have to introduce her in a Superman film. After that though her own story should focus on the core of Supergirl's character. She's an outsider, an alien from another world. Superman for being all 'Last Son of Krypton' grew up on Earth with the mindset of a human being. Kara is from another world, another culture. Her drama comes from adjusting to life on Earth. I think basically she should sort of be like Data from Next Gen in a sense. Certainly Supergirl would have emotions and feelings but her journey is that of discovering what about Earth and by extension humanity is worth protecting. She wouldn't be trying to be human but understanding her new home.
Alright done rambling

There is nothing inherently diffrent about doing a female character-and i do think there are mutiple ways-Sgfan brought up Hunger Games-which is a great example of doing it well . However i don't think its the only way of doing it. you could female superhero comedy, or a drama, or any number of ways. You do need a direction and a vision.
I think a trick that is hard in any kind of female action genre is rommance. The dynamics are tricky, largely based on how society treats roles of men of women. One either ends up with a passive figure, or an attempt at equality which kind of dimishes the heroines role. Its been done decently but i can't think of a live action movie where it has been done well. Whens its been done badly(see for example Catwoman) it can really sink a movie
Wheedon is not sodenburgh here but i think hes very good with plots, or at least getting the basic down well. Hes never really done rommances very well in a movie but i think he could.
I remember about 8 years ago(i am going on memory) Wheedon wrote a script to a wonder woman movie. I tend to think Wonder Woman is an almost impossible character to do right, but if anyone could bring her to the screen i would say him.
PS. I will say however i kind of Like the 1984 Supergirl movie so who am i to talk.

I would absolutely love to read Whedon's WW script. Hopefully it will show up someday. My fear is that it was never completed and "put in the bag" and thus is just some odd file floating around on his computer waiting to be deleted. Anyone know the whole story of that script? Did the studio folks read it and say no. Or did Whedon get wrapped around the axle and didn't finish it?
And I also kind of like the old 1984 Supergirl movie, but much more so when I'm stoned. That applies to a lot of movies, but especially ones that require a sense of humor to appreciate.

As for the WW script, i know it exists, and probabbly went for the drafts. I am pretty sure it went to the casting stage, but bogged down as movies often do around financing. AS someone who works in hollywood a bit a lot of movies do that. Its tricky to get 50 million dollars for something, unless you get a name thats 'worth' it(though one of the werid tricks about recent superhero movies, is the ones that didn't have a name attacked Batman Begins, Iron Man, etc did a lot better then the like Ghost Rider or Green Lantern that had a big star). I would like to read it to, but as these have NDAs attached i don't think it will ever leak.
And Supergirl i think the secret why i like it is the Rommance is kind of sweet-probabbly becuse both of the actors act stoned pretty much the entire timed.
