A few Images 2 - The Sequel
shadar wrote: What is it about Linda Danvers when she takes her wig off? This panel really grabs me, but I have a hard time describing why.
The panel is from the Daring New Adventures of Supergirl series, 1980's I think, which had some pretty amazing art work.
if I have to take a stab, it's the feeling of relaxing/letting guard down. The expression on her face in the first panel sells it. She's smiling with her eyes closed. It feels good to be back to herself again (not "Linda", not "Supergirl", just herself). It feels very intimate.
Clark is different. He grew up as "Clark" and then added a disguise to being Clark (glasses).
Clark Kent IS Clark, and then he becomes Superman/Kal-El. You can't understand him any other way. Unlike Batman where you can ask if Bruce Wayne puts on a Batman costume, or if it's Batman who puts on a Bruce Wayne costume. (Answering that question is probably a core question to a Batman writer.)
Kara is different. She's NOT Linda. She's not Supergirl. She was a teenager before those identities. Those are roles she plays. She fights pretty hard to be "Linda" (even going so far as to chastise Clark because he was going to help fly her luggage to her next apartment ... when she wanted to "fly" as a normal person on a plane). But that's because Linda is a role she plays. She needs to work at being human, and she doesn't want to cheat.
So in that first panel, we're seeing Kara, her true self come out, and we get to see her in the other panels. I think that makes them pretty special.
I've got these queued up to read again, I just haven't got to them yet. (the recent TPBs.) I don't remember if they focused on that distinction, I don't remember them overtly calling it out, but it's how I read the Supergirl stories from the 70s.

Her outfit looks almost Victorian. I for one wouldn't mind a non-canon mini-series about Supergirl or She-Hulk (or any number of heroines) set in the 1800s, or even the 1700s.
Then I have a feeling you'll like looking through these if you haven't seen them before:

I included one of the She-Hulk images as a sample:

Yup, I've seen those - love them. They only make me want the historical comics more!

I remember meeting this girl at Lucca 2016, she was one of the few Supergirls in a sea of DCEU Harley Quinns.

What about that super woman? Can't the union do anything? What are we going to do, drive for Uber or Lyft? Doesn't she know we have bills to pay, and hungry families?

After deflecting three bullets from her chest, she has decided to return fire --from her eyes.
Wouldn't want to be the shooter about now.

Sometimes a super girl needs some extra energy and a bit more oomph... and nothing is faster than standing on a mountain top in a lightning storm and inviting some bolts to strike -- the power of a major bolt of lightning is fantastic.
In a very Velorian-esq way, she has rolled the top of her costume down to expose herself fully to the storm. After all, Vels store their energy in very attractive ways. .
