New live action Wonder Woman TV series in the works

08 Jan 2011 14:58 #21222 by AJF
It was just reported this Friday, By Entertainment weekly.com that all the major broadcast networks have passed on WW. The major reason stated for them not picking up the show or even buying a script from kelley and WB tv is that the project would cost too much money.

The last network to reject the project just this Friday was NBC.

I had a feeling something like this would happen.

Deadline Hollywood has pretty well written article about WW not going anywhere. It says that the CW could not afford the show, and that with NBC going through a transiton peroid with new Comcast appointed head bob greenblatt, they were afraid picking up such a large show from anohter studio and paying a large license fee for it. Plus, the failure of Bionic Woman back in 2007 worried them.

I think the success of Kelle's new NBC drama, Harry's Law may have impressed NBC's new entertainment chief, Bob Greenblatt.

First descrition of the show states

"drama about the dc comics icon, a vigilante crime fighter in l.a. but also a successful corporate executive and a modern woman trying to balance all of the elements of her extraordinary life"

I hope I'm reading too much into this, but this certainly does not sound like the comic character I know and love. Vigilante? That comment suggests she won't even have any super powers. Colour me unimpressed

Lets take a look at NBC's new shows this year:

Love Bites (modern romance, comedy)
Friends with Benefits (modern romance, comedy)
The Marriage Ref (comedy about death of romance)
Parks and Recreation (dysfunctional office politics, comedy)
Perfect Couples (romantic comedy)
Harry's Law (lawyer show)

Now, how does WW fit in?

1) A romantic angle or tension will dominate. She comes from a race of lesbians, but no way will NBC go there. So there will be man, and because she doesn't know anything about male/female relationships or sexual politics, there will be comedic moments.

2) When she's not falling into the quicksand of romantic relationships, she'll be saving people as a vigilante (which means, outside the law). So there will be a lawyer angle.

Here's my prediction, coming from a guy who likes to write stories:

She'll try to fit into a normal workplace, but have lots of funny moments where she doesn't. (A few borrowed ideas from Park and Rec here).

She'll become fond of an Assistant District Attorney (the romantic interest and the lawyer angle) and learns about criminals who are escaping prosecution from him. Crimes bosses and politicians most likely. (Borrowed ideas from Harry's Law).

She'll try to fix those injustices, while keeping her secret from the ADA, who is given the job of tracking down this new vigilante. (Creating various kinds of conflict that augments their unresolved romantic tension).

Her physical abilities will be Batman grade, and she'll mainly rely on a few Amazon tricks up her sleeve which help her bring the bad guys to justice (albeit outside the law).

The man in her life (that ADA) will save her a few times, without ever knowing that WW and the woman he's so fond of are the same person.

She'll agonize over telling him who she really is, but won't, thus creating an ongoing tension in the story.

There will be no sex, no flying and no scenes of superhuman strength other than being better with her fists (due to "amazon training") than the bad guys.

Her ability to magically change her appearance/clothing (using some gadget) and compel bad people to tell the truth (using some gadget) and Batman-grade fighting skills will be her "superpowers".

The success of the show will depend on the chemistry of the unresolved romantic angle, along with enough serious lawyer stuff to give it "meat", and touches of comedy to keep it from getting dark.

Anyway, it'll be fun to look back on this post in a year and see how close I came to predicting it.

(Actually, I hope I'm totally wrong and its really a modern remake of the 20th century TV show with a scantily clad hottie who can bend steel bars.)

Damn. That's what I get for not reading the "fine print" (another site calls it "a reinvention of the iconic D.C. comic" ) Why don't they just make her Batwoman and be done with it.

and I'm afraid you will be proven correct, shadar. :x

The place where I think it would go beyond a Batgirl or Batwoman character will be to introduce elements of Amazon lore, along with her magical gadgets.

Unfortunately, those aren't the things about WW that I'm fondest of. I like the idea that she could arm wrestle Superman (and barely lose) before taking him to bed to prove she's the stronger sex in other ways.

Guess we gotta write those stories ourselves...

I wouldn't read too much into the description...if memory serves the Bionic Woman remake's description was something really hokey like "using her bionic powers as a device for liberating the modern woman juggling yada, yada". While the show had a lot of holes, it was fairly true to its predecessor with her being a government operative.

I don't think NBC would shell out the licensing costs to just create some generic "vigilante". While I think it will be darker than the 70's version, I'm optimistic it'll stay close to the mythology...

Got my fingers crossed, lfan. "Darker" is fine, as long as they don't go too far down the Chris Nolan hyper-realism route. Wonder Woman is a super-being, after all, so let her do her stuff. 8)

I do admire your optimism lfan and I hope your right. I can cope with dark, I actually liked Bionic Woman, I was one of the few! What I couldn't cope with is an unpowered Wonder Woman. Shadar, you are a gifted story teller, you have brought me out in a cold sweat, and I will have knigthmares with your vision of the show, which may be very close to how the pilot goes. :(

Well, I'm going to write my own pilot for a WW series, starting tonight, and we'll see how that works. Of course, it won't be any more fit for TV than my other stories, but at least I'll put down how I see the character in the 21st Century.

I've share a single scene first, and we'll see if you think I'm on an interesting path or not.

Agree with you completely though... an unpowered WW would be a very poor feast.

IF WW ends up being really bad, we can't blame NBC. It's WB produced show. BW 2007, on the other hand was an NBC owned show.

As, i have posted hear time and time again, the suits at NBC micromanged BW to death, to the point where it had no reall producers or writers.

All the suits at NBC and its production studio that messed up BW have all been forced out of the company

Thx AJF....if its WB produced (who own DC), I would hope its true to its roots. Maybe I'm just being overly hopeful. I, of course, would not be happy de-powering her either

I'm afraid Shadar nailed it. We're gonna get Wonder Woman designed to appeal to women, not internet uberpervs like you & me. I think the most we can realistically hope for is that she still wears a bustier and panties with stars on them, and that the actress they choose is hot and has big tits. A magical spinning transformation is a remote possibility. And throatlifts and sexy iron bar bends around criminal wrists with an 'I'm so much stronger than you' lift of the eybrow are probably not worth getting our hopes up for.

Replied by shadar on topic WW pilot
After the WW TV series discussions, I write a couple of scenes last night to describe my idea of a pilot for a WW TV series. Just a start, but I'm interested if this sounds interesting.

I've put some explanatory info in the beginning of the file below, and then attached two chapters, one with a lot of action, and the other Steven meeting Diana Prince.

I'll open a new topic in Updates so I can post additional chapters over there.
