New live action Wonder Woman TV series in the works

31 Jan 2011 06:30 #21471 by shadar
Actually, that clip emphasizes something that's almost always problematic with Cosplay... very few people look even half as good in costume as they are envisioned in the comics (or in my head).

I mean Kaley is seriously hot, but she's not even remotely a stand-in for Wonder Woman.

About the closest I've seen to someone who can actually pull off a superheroine is Laura Vandervoort on Smallville. She generally keeps herself very fit, and has an athletic background, so she carries some muscle, but I noticed in a recent review she was lamenting that she would have hit the gym to improve her abs if she'd known they were going to put her in the Supergirl costume (more or less) in the last episode she appeared in. Apparently the costume was a last second surprise.

Good news is that since she's slated for a few more episodes this season, or so it appears, she should be busting her ass in the gym right now to improve on her Girl of Steel looks.

What's truly cool is that she really gets the character. Nobody has taken Supergirl to heart the way she has.

In part, that has to come from her playing soccer, basketball, baseball and tennis, track and field, swimming, golf, cheerleading, bicycling, waterskiing, diving, rollerblading, as well as having a 2nd degree black belt in karate and is a kick-boxer, and a solid gymnastics background.

Not many (any?) actresses have that kind of athletic background, and it shows.

Laura Vandervoot does pull of super girl nicely. Patty Zariello pretty lady could pull off playing power girl.

I had not come across Patty before, but you are right on. She's got some awesome muscles and boobs as well, not to mention a pretty face and blonde hair.

Easily as good a model for PG as Laura is for SG.

Perfection would be about ten more pounds on Patty's very lean frame, and another cup size on the boobs. But she is the best PG I've seen yet.

Thanks for sharing...

Here's a quick tweak on Patty in Photoshop to enhance her PG credentials.

Now she's got PG class boobs and muscles, and her blue eyes.

Kind of grown-up PG who has let her hair grow out a bit.

Very nicely done.

Now she would be a very good reason to stay inside while Chicago and better part of the mid-west gets hit with snow storm. :)

Thanks for turning me on to Patty and pointing the way to her picts... she's outstanding.

Now if only someone could convince her to do a PG cosplay at some comics convention. A very thin, skintight white PG costume stretched over that steel-hard body of hers to show off all those hard-earned curves... oh, yeah.

The first "scoop" of the script seems to be floating about the internet. I've attached a link herewith.

www.bleedingcool.com/2011/02/01/scoop-da...c+News+%26+Rumors%29

I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry, but if there is the slightest element of truth in this script it certainly does not match the description originally given. My first thought after reading this was, Is it April 1st?

It makes you wonder why even license an idea if you venture so far away from the original concepts.

Agreed....this is beyond ridiculous from the looks of it. It seems the NBC network has two bipolar directions in terms of 'tone' for their action dramas:

1) Light and Cutesy (Harry's Law, this)
2) Dark and Cyberpunkish (Cape, Heroes, Bionic Woman)

The ice cream on the couch scene is so Ally McBeal, it's nausiating....

I wish it was April Fools...but at least now I know why NBC picked up the pilot...nothing here is remotely geekish or comic bookish or threatening in an way to introduce a real super heroine type of character to TV.

Basically, WW will be one big disgustingly obnoxious joke. Just like all the other ridiculous and completely unwatchable shows on NBC. So in that sense, very predictable.

Which will ensure that WW as a character will never survive. If not for the fact that I'm not a big WW fan, I'd be really upset. As it is, I'm going to forget all about this show.

What do you exspect form the likes of David e Kelley? I knew a tv critic for a local newspaper who told me that he thought Kelley deep down hated women in general after seeing a few episodes of Aly Mcbeal.

What BC got ahold of was most likely the spec script he used to sell the show to NBC. Keep in mind NBCU has just undergone a major change in management at the top with Comcast now controlling the company. That's not going to be the real shooting script. But, I still don't think Kelley is the right person for the job.

I guess we have to put our money on the management changes at NBC and hope for the best. We can only hope that the original NBC willingness to buy a script like that led to a bunch of people being fired and new ones hired who have brains.

Too bad the SCIFI network can't afford to touch copyrighted/trademarked properties like the ones from DC Comics. They'd do it right given their (admittedly small) audience is composed of people who "get" the characters.

As many writers discovered the script is rarely definitive - granted that's more true for movies than TV series - so maybe there's still hope.
Also if these leaks are true (we have no confimation yet), they might force them to make some changes... big ones.

Interesting, the Katy Perry bit since she has been mentioned in the "I Wish She Was Super" thread a few times:

NBC's "Wonder Woman" Pilot: 10 Questions Answered
By The Futon Critic Staff (TFC)

Please note: As a courtesy, please do not reproduce these comments to newsgroups, forums or other online places. Links only please.

LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- Pilot season is officially underway and once again it's the franchise updates, spin-offs and genre projects which have drawn the most attention. Case in point: David E. Kelley's "Wonder Woman" pilot for NBC. We've managed to read Kelley's 72-page script and thought we'd offer up a quick FAQ, including some new exclusive details.

As always, there's a lot that could change from this draft of the script and what ultimately airs should it make it to series. DO NOT READ AHEAD if you don't want to know. Also, this isn't meant as a plot synopsis, just a rundown of various elements at work here.

[UPDATE #1: Warner Bros. Television, feeling said notes were too spoilery, has requested this piece be removed. We have done so in good faith.]

[UPDATE #2: Warner Bros. Television, due to the abundance of similar reports before and after this was run, has subsequently agreed to let the post remain.]

1. What's the main thrust of the show? Meet Diana Themyscira. By night, Diana fights crime as Wonder Woman, a Los Angeles-based superhero. By day, Diana runs Themyscira Industries, which among other things, sells Wonder Woman-related merchandise to fund her crime-fighting efforts. And since the public knows Diana Themyscira is Wonder Woman, she's recently invented a secret identity, Diana Prince (complete with a Clark Kent-esque disguise involving contact lenses, glasses, pulling her hair back and a housecat named Desi), to allow her a more normal perspective on the world.

2. What does the costume look like? The script only details it as "a colorful spandex suit." It won't be the original, iconic costume though (don't worry, she still keeps it hung in her closet). Despite that look being the company's top seller, Diana insists her current outfit is a tad more appropriate.

3. What about her gadgets? The golden lasso of truth is there, as are her bullet reflecting bracelets. In lieu of an invisible plane (or being able to fly), Diana uses various sedan-sized aircrafts, made by BMW no less ("The Ultimate Air Machine").

4. Who's along for the ride? Henry Demeter, the CEO of Themyscira Industries who harbors a crush on her; Myndi Mayer, Diana's press secretary/best friend; Etta Candy, her cheerful secretary; and Captain Ed Indelicato, Diana's contact at the LAPD; are among the prominent roles, as are "The Animals" (Ryan Miller, Austy Lyne, Jennie Weeks), a trio of techs Diana uses for her evidence analysis. And of course there's Steve Trevor, the government agent who crash landed on Themyscira, home of the mythical Amazons; fell in love with one of them, Diana; and brought her back with him to New York. They've since broken up as Diana now operates out of L.A. and Steve is a lawyer for the Justice Department. That's not to say she's over him (or vice-versa).

5. Who's the main villain? Veronica Cale, head of Cale-Anderson Pharmaceuticals, who despite beauty and success that would rival Diana herself, can't stand our heroine and aims to take her down. Her plan: well, let's just say it involves pharmaceuticals.

6. Any other mythology teases? Themyscira is much like the island from "Lost": it's almost impossible to find. And leaving it comes with a price for Amazons: Diana's no longer immortal.

7. Any references to other DC Comics characters? Diana keeps a picture of her mother and sister on her nightstand.

8. Seriously, it features Katy Perry? Yes, Kelley throws in a running gag involving Perry stealing Diana's look in the video for her new single "Super-duper Me." Also, Diana has her own entrance theme for press conferences: "Wonder of You," as performed by Jeffrey McDonald.

9. Are there flashbacks? Yes, how Diana and Steve came to meet and fall in love is frequently glimpsed throughout the pilot. Myndi amusingly notes Diana literally fell for the first man she ever met.

10. What's the good/the bad/the ugly? The good: Wonder Woman gets to kick a lot of ass. The bad: Diana seems to sing along every time music is played. The ugly: Diana uses the phrase "we got bidness" at one point; and flip flops between being well-versed in our culture (Halliburton, Brett Favre) and having references go over her head (the aforementioned Katy Perry).

Granted, still sounds hokey, but at least they mention she kicks ass alot. And so much for the iconic costume -- although I think everyone was hoding onto false hope there....

Agree that it sounds marginally better. Toss in good acting and some decent special effects and it has promise.

This latest report appeals to my endless optimism, which had been dashed on that first script description.

The idea of her having two public personnas (one as a CEO and the other as WW) and also a secret identity is a twist. It'll be interesting to see how that works out.

Can't remember any other superheroes off the top of my head who had two public and one private identity.

thedailybeast.com has a more detailed review of the pilot script. The script is dated 12-16-10.

From what they posted it sounds really, really bad. WB/DC is insane to let Kelley tackle WW. If the show is picked up by NBC and fails, it will be a bigger failure than BW 2007. I hope it kills Kelleys career.

I must admit, when I heard of the WW/Themscyra/Prince thing, I didn't like it, but I love it. Obviously, David has never read the Brenda Wade/Ms Americana stuff on the net. But the idea of Diana having money makes sense, as well as the non secret identity. Also know that she can't go undercover without needing a disguise, so she uses the same one.

The thing i'm not sure about? The fact that Trevor and Diana are estranged. You want to root for a heroine that believes in man, not the sapphic sister that thinks men are the root of all evil. The worst fear is Wonder Woman becoming Ally McBeal, complete with confidence issues.
