She-Hulk Comic Art

While I like a good storyline and creative writing as much as the next guy, nothing turns me off a book more than artwork. I was looking forward to the new Shulkie book until I couldn't take the "cartoon-y" art any longer:

At which time, I was just biding my time till they switched artists, thinking it couldn't get worse. I was wrong......

It was encouraging that Marvel's (fairly) recent launches had a number of ubergirl books -- Captain Marvel, Ms Marvel, She-Hulk. But I've been majorly disappointed with the style art in them. Is it just me?

your not wrong.

I think the art for Ms. Marvel is fine and Captian Marvel is...okay. But she Hulk is...

Part of the problem with She Hulk as she actually exists in comics is she tends to be presented as well a legal comedy. There is nothing inherently wrong with that, but i am guessing you don't need a major action artist to do that-just a kind of cut rate matt fraction.

Which has been the ongoing trend-since the switch to digital printing and artwork you get a lot more freedom in color and design-which paradoxically means that its easier to print realitivly simple and cartoonish artwork- particularly in marvel books. This isn't bad. Like i said the vaugely cartoony art of Ms. Marvel works for it becuse it does tend to emphasis- well shes a kid. Captian marvel as a square jawed adventure comic-looks okay....

Its also allowed for Example DC turn to there books into paintings(Batwoman is a bueatiful book) which can work for like a batman style hero. And Spiderman books that use it can be fine turning him into distorted lines...

But yeah She Hulk. its not that great.

I see it too. Cartoon-y is the only thing to call it. I think the art was the best in the 70's. Here are two examples from a Powergirl comic. Compare that today. I'm a bit nostalgic.

As long as I'm at it, I should upload a few more excellent pages from that comic... this is the PG I came to love.
She exudes a sense of power around her that eclipses even Superman.

I know I've hijacked this thread, but I couldn't resist given there wasn't a lot more to say about the way She-Hulk was being drawn (badly). And I wanted to provide an example of what I liked... from nearly 40 years ago.

Does anyone want me to upload links to that full PowerGirl comic book? I've posted nearly half of it here, so far.
