So Marvel has a new book coming out in January called Star. Here's a little news dump on it, not much really except that she has ties to Carol Danvers and her nemesis Dr. Minerva. I really, really like the alternate cover.

It is nice to see a relatively new attractive Superheroine with long hair and an impressive figure come out from Marvel these days.

I kind of wish this was a stand-alone comic and not part of the general Earth 616 continuity, other than that I'll wait and see.

On a side note, I can't help but see a lot of Power Girl in her design.

Star is Ripley Ryan who was a young reporter that interviewed Carol Danvers for a magazine early on in the series.  Long story short, she was kidnapped and taken to an alternate world/dimension/whatever where Carol eventually rescued her.  Rather than being grateful, Ripley became bitter at the peril that these heroes (incl Captain Marvel) put her in and vowed never to be weak again.

Lucky for her, Dr Minerva was doing some experiments with Kree biology and needed a few volunteers.  While the experiments were successful, Ripley never gained Kree powers, so Minerva had to figure something out and made a device that allowed her to drain other's strength, thus becoming Star.  Star drained Cpt Marvel and later everyone in the city becoming REALLY powerful but in the end, CM defeated her and sent her to prison.  Awaking in prison, at the end of the last CM issue, Star finds herself glowing and realizes the the REALITY STONE is in her -- or she is the new Reality Stone.  Last panel shows her flying from prison and plotting her new move.  It's not explained HOW she got the reality stone, but I imagine that will be covered in the mini series

Thanks for the info, I’m not near a shop since I moved, and am not up on current storylines (especially if they are in crossover/event books). Was this Carol/Dr. Minerva story in a mini series?

It was in the last 4 issues of Captain Marvel, starting with issue #8.  "Falling Star" storyline

I'm enjoying this Captain Marvel run overall.  Not stellar, but good.  I like Kelly Thompson in general, I don't think this is her best work, but it's pretty good. She managed to work in some good Carol/Jessica Drew moments, which is aces in my book.

She's writing the Star Mini too, and I'm really interested to see what she's going to do.

There's also going to be a 'Captain Marvel: The End" storyline.  (It's a marvel thing to tell possible future stories of the 'end' of a hero in some variant future)  Marvel is doing a few other heroes too, and have done several other in the past.

Interesting. Will check it out once the series is published in full. I tend to prefer buying the graphic novels that combine several issues together rather than purchasing each issue individually.

No, it was in the current run of Captain Marvel which is something like the eighth or ninth time a title with that name in it has been rebooted since 2012.

The issue which debuted Star (#9) had a boost in sales of almost an extra 10,000 probably due to speculators buying it for the first appearance of the character.
Then sales of #10 went back down their usual mediocre levels. The latest issue, #12, is the one where Star breaks out of jail after realizing that she is the Cosmic MacGuffin.

It's not a mini-series, but the fact is that no Captain Marvel run has lasted very long, so at this point (and this is becoming a running joke among certain areas of fandom)
one might as well consider a good number of Marvel titles to be "mini-series" anyway.

I too was tantalized by the Marvel previews in which images of Star were shown of a fit, beautiful woman with long blond hair in a mask wearing a tight costume (which I would imagine is pretty much the ideal for Superwomenmania).
Hopefully Marvel won't find a way to ruin it.
