Wondering about the Ethics of getting AI to complete uncompleted stories?

I think the subject says it all. Welcome all points of view. Particularly for authors who are inactive and uncontactable.
Own thought: Personal consumption should be okay but what if AI stumbled upon such a masterpiece that I would like to share? And author happens to be uncontactable.

My gut feeling is that you're free to use AI to complete stories, but those shouldn't be shared.
Sometimes, an author just want to disappear for personal reasons that have very little to do with their stories. I've learned the hard way that adding bits to the work of another author can elicit a pretty insane range of reactions, from flattery to outrage.
I can't stress this enough: please, always secure the original author's permission before writing a continuation, spin-off or whatever else.

Yeah I'd definitely ask about it first if you want to make this a public thing, but if it's just for your own personal collection that will always be private then I don't really see the harm.

I think that would be a great use for AI, but only after getting permission of the original author first.
That said, I'm not hopeful of a good outcome from AI at this point. Finishing stories in a satisfying (and non-trivial) way is the most difficult task a writer can face. The one that requires the most originality and insight and planning. Things AI are unlikely to bring to the table, at least now.
But when it comes to extending stories, then that's a different... story. Same rules on author permission should apply, but the task is much easier.

If you want to see the end of an unfinished story, then I would recommend speaking with the author or writing the ending yourself. It is a lot more fulfilling than having an AI create something that will likely be generic and not fitting the genre and themes found on this website. I greatly enjoyed my time writing the "Fall of Superior Girl" story. It was both a fun experience and good learning opportunity about writing.
I have played around with AI writing tools but was just not impressed with what came out. Even something as simple as "a paragraph about the weather in (area where I live)" was pretty underwhelming. The AI actually wrote something like "sometimes it is hot while other times it can be cold." Well, that describes just about every place that people live on this planet.

I'm assuming here that AI story creation will improve rapidly, just like other AI-driven tools seem to be.
Agree the first stuff was underwhelming and simplistic to point of hilarity, but like all new tech ventures, I'm sure it will get much better.
Whether it will ever get creative enough to be interesting for this genre is yet to be determined.

From what I saw in the image creation department, the problem is that AI creation have already become self-referential, which causes a progressive lowering in quality.I'm assuming here that AI story creation will improve rapidly, just like other AI-driven tools seem to be.

Not surprised by that. Mass public access to generative AI is a new technology. Give it 5 or 10 years of advancement, and I suspect it will be a different and far more capable technology. In the meantime, the more people who try to use it, the high the probability that it will improve rapidly.
I'm getting pretty old, but two of the things I hope to see while I'm still kicking is AI movies in our genre (or similar) that are indistinguishable from life action, and truly capable autonomous vehicles that I can buy to operate on dark, twisty rural roads (where I live). The last before I get too old to drive myself.
But before then, it would be nice to read something written by AI that was both artistic and competent and refreshingly innovative.
It's going to be touch and go as to whether I'll see any of those in time, but I'm hopeful of the last.

What people need to realise is AI bots are effectively random word generators. They are a probability similulator to determine the next most logical word based on whats its bern "taught". It thinks is most appropriate.
The Point if this tidbit: how much of a satisfactory conclusion are you willing to put down to random chance?
