Here is a (late) XMas gift... A full novel called "Labrat" that clocks in at 187 pages. The summary is that a high school sophomore becomes entangled in a series of increasingly dangerous events not of her choosing. Is there are a rational explanation for what is occurring to her?
** VIOLENCE : Yes, it tends to be graphic but not grotesque. Descriptive might be a better term.
** NUDITY : Yes. Again, descriptive but, hopefully, nothing that crosses the line into pornographic.
** SEX : None.
** OBSCENITIES : Yes. No one swears like a drunken sailor but there are obscenities and there are slurs.
** ADULT THEMES : It would reveal too much to write exactly what they are. However, the story is set in contemporary America and deals with contemporary American topics concerning violence, politics, fringe beliefs & mental health.
If I had to give this an MPAA movie rating, it would be "R" and not a modern-day "R" (which is just a "PG-13" but with more graphic violence) but an old-school "R."
SPOILERS
At some point, a story has to escape or else it just enters an endless cycle of constant adjustments. This story escaped.
Anyway, I hope everyone enjoys it. Happy Holidays.

Warning: Spoiler!
The main theme of the story is "What is 'truth'? What can you trust?" Also, whenever you deal with any topic these days, it's politicized and there's no escaping that. I haven't shied away from topics such as mass shootings and far-right fringe beliefs but I've at least tried to be fair about them. There was going to a 4th act but, the more that I wrote, the more that I realized that I didn't need it. There are still hints of what the 4th act was going to be (The Epilogue may as well serve a "sneak preview") of what it was. The story could use more trimming in some areas and more padding in others; Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. However, I think some minor storylines also end when they should as well. Since the theme is "What is 'truth'?" I leave it to the reader to decide for themselves what it ultimately is; That's the whole point.

Are there feats of superhuman strength, speed and invulnerability in this?

Warning: Spoiler!
Is it Marvel-tier abilities? No. The best that I can describe them without becoming too spoiler-ific would be to make a comparison: You expect a 350-pound professional weight-lifter to have certain physical abilities above and beyond that of even a very physically fit 16-year old girl. You expect a 20-year old professional male sprinter to have certain physical abilities above and beyond that of even a very physically fit 16-year old girl. And the same thing with a professional stunt actor. So it would be very surprising to have those abilities seemingly appear from this main character. Or, to perhaps put it another way, imagine a 5-year old who plays the recorder as well as a typical 14-year old. Yes, there are musical prodigies of all types but it would still be extraordinary to behold. The displays of abilities are such that it could be best described as "edge of plausibility." I hope that helps.

This is a great story. Really detailed, thorough, and attacking the central premise from lots of angles. Thoroughly recommended.

Dayum, that was a fun read. The only disappointment is the thought this might be the singular instalment. Thanks for sharing!
