Autumn 2022 Workshop

20 Sep 2022 20:34 - 20 Sep 2022 20:35 #75561 by Woodclaw
Autumn 2022 Workshop was created by Woodclaw
Autumn is coming and it’s getting darker outside.
For ages, we have huddled together and told stories of the fantastic.
Of the arcane.
Of practitioners and guardians of magic.
Now... this power of our imagination is free!

Welcome to the Magic Unleashed - Ubergirl Style workshop.
You can craft any story. It doesn't matter if your characters are practitioner of magic, champions empowered by the arcane or villains abusing it for their own gain. As long as it's magic everything is fair game.
  • Each entry MUST work around the theme.
  • No entry can be longer than 10,000 words (give or take a few).
  • All characters must be over the age of 18.
  • SWM reserves the right to withhold and/or disqualify submitted entries based on their sole discretion of the content.
  • Entries must be received no later than October 30th, 2022 at 11:59 pm GMT.
  • Once submitted, entries will be voted on by the SWM user via an online poll.

Why does one story have 2 separate votes? You've got a part 1 and a part 2 both able to get a vote,. Isn't that unfair to the rest of the stories, which are only able to get one vote per person?

Well I would say that if both stories are equally good then it actually canabalises each other. Btw just want to say thanks to all the authors.

My story was well over the 10,000 word limit (Give or take a few) In order for it to qualify I really had to do some butchering, including removing entire dream sequences.

I think LFAN saw that he could only edit the story so much without hurting the story, so he broke it up into two parts.

Which begs the question, why are we having word limits on the big WS's? Or was this the short story WS.

In any event,, we're not playing for a 10 ten thousand dollar prize, i think it's fair and reasonable that if both stories combined get the total amount of votes....then that story should win

Im trying to write my response to this again after my first comment somehow didn’t get posted due to lost connection.

There is two general reasons to why we have the word limit.
1) To limit the amount of time readers have to spend on reading through all the submissions,
2) To hopefully inspire some writers by saying there is an upper limit.

That second one might not work, as you guys are pointing out here, but we can revise it for next time, or just make it less of a rule, and more of a guideline.

hope that explains things.

It's not the first time an author submitted a multi-part story to a workshop.
In general, the decision to implement a word-limit even on some of the long-format entries was to prevent the appearences of behemoth-sized stories that require too much time to read to give them or the other entries a fair chance.

FWIW, I was resigned to the fact that I would be disqualified due to word length. I had a story in mind that I wanted to share with the community and it so happened it fit the theme of the workshop so I tried to slam it in there. TBT, several parts were edited sharply down and others were tossed entirely as I attempted initially to make it less than 10k, but it was clear that wasn’t happening.

I was open in the discord thread that it was going to be too long but it was suggested to break it up. Not my ideal scenario, but I left that to TPTB.

It wasn’t my intention to create controversy. Not looking for accolades other than a few people saying they enjoyed it. :).
