A Supergirl movie where she doesn’t actually have her powers would be… a bit anti climatic after such a long wait !
I think it's only in book 1 of 8 where she's on a red sun planet. And there she has ~Amazonian abilities. Like grabbing the sharp blade of a sword and ripping it from a man's hand, spilling a lot of her own blood. But she seemingly heals very fast, almost magically.
The series is a bit disorienting and confusing to me, but the gist is kind of Ok. I'm still trying to process it, but am not working too hard given there is no telling how a movie script will evolve out of it.
I'm sure Gunn and his scriptwriters will take a lot of license. And that might be good in this case.

As I get it, the story is also told through another person, so we are working with a possible unreliable narrator (which can lead to confusion).

Unreliable narrator stories can be fun, but definitely confusing at first. I suspect given this unusual comic series, fans won't be overly locked into the comic book, and will accept significant 'enhancement' of the story for live action purposes. We're pretty used to different Supergirl portrayals by now, but I suspect this one will be further out.I skimmed through the first issues (and I'll likely have to get them to read through them properly) but yeah, it looks like she gets her powers back some time around #2.
As I get it, the story is also told through another person, so we are working with a possible unreliable narrator (which can lead to confusion).
But then, I love the 'SciFi superheroine' sub-genre, more specifically 'SciFi Kryptonian'.
I've been writing in a related sub-genre for years. I think starships, futuristic weapons, alien planets and species and a superhuman girl can be a fun mix.

Personally, I'm all done with seeing pants on SG. Good image quality though... really helps you envision her in the role.
I'm with you... she wore skirts when I was first a fan in the 1960's, and with few exceptions, a tiny skirt was her trademarked outfit. It's the one part of her iconic character that Superman doesn't share.
But... given 21st century sensibilities relative to the movies prime audience, I'm expecting to see pants in the movie. Even though the comic book that Gunn is using for inspiration has her wearing a skirt.
But I've decided it's just a nit. It won't significantly dent my enthusiasm. Skintight clothing on a Kryptonian is still plenty hot. I just want a well-written and interesting character development that holds together -- and a decent story.

That being said, I also hope for a skirt, if for nothing else than Supergirl being meant to be *feminine*, and the pants just makes her more similar to Clark.

Very nice... AI artwork continues to impress me. And it's still in its infancy.
