That's a pretty good mission statement.
"...stopping monsters who want to harm the innocent and helping others whenever I can, no matter what."
"Hope, help and compassion for all."
Pretty much nails it.
We'll see if Gunn's Supergirl shares that view. He might decide to get edgy with her character given he describes her as traumatized and broken from watching nearly every other member of her species die. Given she grew up on a chunk of Krypton, steeped in Kryptonian culture, and was the only one to escape the destruction of Argo City (apparently), she's been through a lot more than Kal/Clark, who came to Earth as a baby with no knowledge of his origin and was raised human. He's only seen Krypton in virtual reality (Jor El's crystals).
Mentally and emotionally, her temperament could be written a lot different. But we'll see how Gunn handles this.
I'm encouraged, however, because I liked his characters in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies.
Now, instead of her dog being her companion at the beginning of the story, I'd love to see her and Rocket traveling around together. But that's impossible given DCU versus Marvel ownership of characters.

Who is she?
What is she?
The movie could then end with “I’m Kara Zor-El, and I’m Supergirl!”
That of course leaves room for conflict in the middle.

It would make sense to me if her story arc would be about finding herself: She has lost everything she knows and love. She has her cousin, but he is like a stranger to her, and he knows just about nothing about krypton. Now she’s on earth, and feeling like an alien all the while having to confront her grief. That's a pretty good mission statement.

Wouldn't it be great to have a massive universe crossover a la _Who Framed Roger Rabbit_ (when WB and Disney characters were both present)?
