It looks like Reitman lost the plot, at the same time as he really lost the plot in the movie.

there are a number of stories/rumors floating around at what an ass he was to work with. His son, Jason, seems to have taken up the mantle both as a talented director and a pain in the ass to deal with.

I think Reitman's role and production of the movie may have been the reason it bombed.
Despite Uma saying on the DVD extras that she really enjoyed making the film, that may have been caused by some 'influence' from Reitman.

Kind of amazing considering he has such an amazing resume of great films from the 80s. Of course, Stanley Kubrick was infamously hard to work with but he did make absolute masterpieces of film. Funny enough, both directors kind of lost their mojo after a while. Eyes Wide Shut and the parts of AI that Kubrick filmed before his death were not in any way his best work. IMHO, Reitman's peak work started taking a downturn after Kindergarden Cop in 1990.
That being said, I think the script for My Super Ex-Girlfriend was not very solid to begin with. It was a good idea but things needed more fleshing out. Better setup and more initial character development before we start finding out Uma is this insecure nutcase despite what the world thinks of her. Basically, what the Boys have slowly been doing with Homelander in that series.
