Anyone see it, is it any good? I hear it flopped, and I'm not surprised, but I hope it at least features some good feats. Considering how powerful Captain Marvel is I was super disappointed in her first movie and how little is shown of her true potential. Does this do any better?

I do have the chance to get in and see it for free, but I haven’t really been paying attention to the MCU for a long while so I likely wouldn’t fully be able to appreciate what is going on.

Not sure if you’re talking to me, but I neither have seen it yet, nor claims that it’s “shitty”.
I assume that Erik have a reason why they think the movie could be shitty.

I saw a couple of review on Youtube and things don't look good.
I admit that most of the criticism I saw up until now point out to two factors:
  1. Brie Larson's underwhelming performance. After a few movie, I think it's safe to say that she really doesn't click with the character (it also doesn't help that the cinematic version of Carol has a lot of writing problems).
  2. The general complain that, after a certain point, the Marvel movies started to lean too much into the "one joke a minute" formula. What made many of the early phase movies work was how different they felt from one another and how they explored different genres (First Avenger was period war movie, Winter Soldier a political thriller, Ant-Man a heist movies, etc.). Currently, they tend to rely too much upon comedy and action style one-liners.

Considering the quality of everything else that has come out of the current phase of the MCU, Erik is right to assume the worst. Especially since it's not like there was much Ubergirl action in the first Captain Marvel.

I'm hoping there's at least SOMETHING. Like a scene, sequence, any ubergirl action with some good feats. I have super low expectations but I'm ready to be happily surprised

Apparently, after a few lackluster reviews from the premiere audience, the Marvels is picking up speed.

Initially I was a bit unsure about this film, then I saw the second trailer (with the jumping fight scene) and it looked a lot more interesting. I’ll probably try to see it this week, when I get a chance.

Brie isn't the actress to play Carol. Claire Danes, wouldn't even have to act, in Homeland, her character was practically Carol Danvers without the superpowers. Brie in the new Captain Marvel costume doesn't do it. The Black and Gold looks suoer hot, and Claire Danes would've been amazing in that out.

Yeah Brie was not a great choice. I think they just assumed she'd be a huge thing after her early award win and snapped her up thinking she was gonna be a superstar and they'd be locking her in before she got very expensive. Instead her career didn't really become a huge as they thought. Guess they bet wrong.

I'm one of those odd people who only liked Marvel's Guardian of the Galaxy movies. Mainly the first one.

When watching any other Marvel movie, my brain is always spinning, scene by scene, imagine what the crummy scene could be like if they'd had good writers. All the potential not realized. I'm completely incapable of immersing myself in them, which is what I want to be able to do.

I have great hopes for AI-movies, written by skillful writers and fleshed out by the AI. But that presumes the "skillful" part is somehow more possible in such movies.

While I don't hold myself out as a huge Marvel fan, I'll respectfully disagree on the good writers bit. While it may not be your (or our) cup of tea, I'll say that with writers like Joe & Anthony Russo, James Gunn, Edgar Wright, Ryan Coogler, and Jon Watts, one thing that the series does NOT suffer from is a paucity of talented writers. Are there misses to go with the hits? Absolutely. But there are also some objectively superb talents behind their scripts.

Saw it over the weekend and although I have problems with the film, it was pretty fun.

My main issue with the film was the editing and although I do appreciate the pace of the film - it never drags at a specific point it feels like major story beats are cut out of the film. There is a point in the film where there an action occurs and then we cut to a pretty dramatic reaction and it feels like we missed the beginning of the conversation/argument that builds to that reaction. It felt like a pivotal scene and we got half of it. From that point on it felt like some of the growth was unearned. It really bugged me and I wish the editors went another way.

That aside my neice really dug Capt Rambeau and really wants to go back and watch WandaVision to see how she got her powers. The south asian guys beside me LOVED the Kahn family, as did the crowd in the theatre.

Things that worked for me:
1) The dynamic of the 3 leads
2) Choreography of the leads (wish there was more)

What didn't work:
1) Sam Jackson subplot
2) Editing of and after a pivot scene
3) The villian, who probably was a victim of editing as well
